Sam HAS to do the tests...

Already there's much debate over why Sam is the chosen one for the tasks and why not Dean? So here's my take on it. Now, I'm not partial to either of them. I love Dean AND Sam to death, literally.

First off, I love that Sam didn't kill the hell-hound by going against Dean's wishes. He stayed back because his big brother wanted but he had no choice but to intervene and kill the hell-hound (as a result, inadvertently bathing in its blood) when Dean was cornered. After all, the boys always have each others' backs. That's what they always do. One saves the other in trouble.

Secondly, yes, only one of them has to complete all three tests (I was under the impression that they can switch in taking on the tasks). And it makes sense why it should be Sam because:

1) Sam mentioned the very important reason why it should be him and that's that he wants to survive it. Sam wants to close hell just as much as Dean but Dean's thinking of it as his last goal... he's going in with a mindset that he won't make it out of there... that that's his destiny... that that's the only way he can be useful. Now I have no idea why he thinks like that. Dean's more of a legend.. but for some reason, he only remembers everything that has gone wrong and blames himself for it. Any how, so back to the point, Sam wants to do it and still live to be with his family and friends. I just hope that over the rest of the season, Sam succeeds in making Dean realize how valuable he is for his little brother, Cas, Garth, Charlie, and so many other friends.

2) Sam has more to prove than Dean. The only time when Dean has ever really screwed up was breaking the first seal. And that too wasn't his fault. The guy held out for 30 years! As Sam said, that's a lot longer than anyone would have. Sam, on the other hand, has made many mistakes... He feels like he has to prove himself... he has to earn Dean's faith. And it's true too... Sam's let Dean down twice (hell and purgatory). Granted, he tried his hardest to get Dean out from hell but didn't succeed.. And purgatory, well, that was a whole different story. Plus, during the whole Azazel-Lucifer ordeal, he made some pretty bad choices... trusting Ruby over Dean, getting his stronger powers through demon blood, killing Lilith and starting the apocalypse. I'm sure he also feels the need to repent for what he has done in the past. And this is a perfect opportunity for him to do just that.

3) Sam was chosen by Azazel, Sam was chosen to be Lucifer's vessel, Sam consumed demon blood... wouldn't it be like completing the circle if Sam's the one who slam shuts hell forever? I think Sam owes it to himself to do that on top of 'repenting for his mistakes.'

Any how, it's apparent that the tests are going to take a toll on Sam... Kevin mentioned that in the beginning and the very last scene of Trial and Error showed the process to be painful after Sam chants the spell. So that definitely means that there are many more brother moments coming up rest of the season. And I, for one, can't wait for that!!!

I can go on and on and on about 8X14 Trial and Error - What a fantastic episode! Love how the brothers finally had their heart-to-heart without making it a chick-flick moment. They resolved their differences without even talking about Benny or Amelia or even purgatory. I had tears in my eyes watching Dean telling Sam that he wants his little brother to have a perfect life with wife, kids, grand kids... and that will not only be his little brother's happy ending but his own as well. And I sobbed again when Sam tells Dean that he's not gonna just let him sacrifice himself. That yes, he sees light at the end of this tunnel and he'll take his big brother to it even if he can't see it himself.

Many fans keep saying that the perfect end of the series will be death of one or both the brothers. And I'm sorry but I strongly disagree. I do NOT want either of them to die. Haven't they gone through enough already? Haven't they done enough? I, for one, want them to have a happy ending. And doesn't matter if it's not with a wife, kids, and grand kids, but I want them to find peace somehow. And what Sam said about seeing light at the end of the tunnel and taking Dean to it gives me hope. And I'm gonna hold on to it hoping, really hoping, that we get just that.

Alright, I can go on and on and on but I'll stop with my rambling now... do comment and discuss what you think about the whole thing.

I am kinda divided on the issue. Now, Sam killing the hellhound came as an unexpected move to me because I was expecting Dean would be the one as I was under the impression that the brothers might switch to do the tasks. I am not partial to them either, if I have ever loved any characters equally then they will be these two. But for my clear understanding, I need to know why Sam and not Dean or if it would have been Dean, then why not Sam? I need some sort of reasoning and explanation by the creatives here.

Since Sam has gone ahead with being the 'Chosen one' now, for me it will because of the following reason :

Sam was chosen by Azazel and he was chosen to be Lucifer's vessel. He was meant to be at the dark side but he defeated all of that. The person who was chosen to be (in supernatural's language) devil's little bitch will be now shutting the door to hell forever. What better way to prove that good always wins over evil?

And not because he has to repent for his mistakes. To say he hasn't repented for his wrong choices and mistakes would be unfair, because he repented when he jumped off in the pit with Lucifer to save the world, because he repented when he got his soul back and tried to clean the mess he made as soulless Sam, because he repented when he had a ride with Lucifer who was torturing him day and night. Because he's done with a major chunk of redemption and repentance phase.

As for not looking for Dean while he was in Purgatory, I feel he can no longer be held accountable for that. Although initially I felt the same too, but Sam had his own reasons. There was no way he could do anything. Dean's perspective on this is altogether a different thing.

However I feel there's more to this than meets the eye. We know there's an angel tablet out there too. What could that be for? Why is Naomi so interested in earth's proceeding's now? Could there be a connection between angel tablet and demon tablet? Dean was chosen as Micheal's vessel, he was also God's hammer, what if he's supposed to close the gates of Heaven and Sam, gates of hell? They could probably incorporate it in this season or perhaps next season, may be. I actually find this theory interesting and it will also prove how significant Dean and Sam are in their own ways.

Any how, it's apparent that the tests are going to take a toll on Sam... Kevin mentioned that in the beginning and the very last scene of Trial and Error showed the process to be painful after Sam chants the spell.

^^ That is sure going to be so much trouble for both of them. The way Sam's veins glowed, it didn't look good at all but could that mean he's received some sort of mojo/power as he's the chosen one now?

I loved Trial and Error too. <3 I am so happy they are finally back to being brothers again. And I wish the same future for them as you do. 😳

Great post though Mahi! I love the way you put your thoughts across. :)

I m glad you think that way ...I felt the same and I didn't understand why people felt that it's wrong ...I don't understand how Dean's role become insignifant this way ...Infact I always Dean had the strongest role throughout the series and this storyline changes nothing ...

And the given storyline fits perfectly in my eyes ...I mean we are talking about this guy whose ' world imploded ' when his brother disappeared and he ran to hide from the reality ...Why on earth will he willingly let that happen again ...he will fight tooth and nail to change it ...and look how amazing the story turns out to be when Sam does the test ...He gets to kill the hellhound he promised to kill so long back but couldn't ...He finally could save Dean ...he must have felt so much better knowing that he did atlast save dean and he will save him from the tests and get him to see that light that Dean can't find ever...This is Sam's chance to finally protect Dean for once which he couldn't do before ...He can't let another hell or purgatory thing happen again ...That will be the end of him this time

And He finally seems interested and determined to shut the hell gates ...and look at the reasons behind it ...it's not to save the world...it's not to save the people ...it's to save his brother and make them both survive this ...This is what pushes Sam ...This is what pushes both of them to do anything ...to protect the other one ...Having Sam do the tests only makes it a challenge for both of them ...Dean would now be on his edge worrying about Sam ...Sam will be determined to be in this mission because he finally knows what he wants out of it ...He wants to Dean to have a better life ... This only makes the show much more interesting and powerful ...the storyline fits with their characteristics completely ...

and on a lighter note isn't it Sam's turn to die this year :p ( Not that I want him to die ...but we know the process lolz )

@Husna - I totally agree with the point you made about Sam being the one to close hell forever because he was the chosen one for the dark side. You know I love what you've mentioned about the demon vs. angel tablet and maybe Dean is supposed to close heaven forever. But wouldn't that mean that Cas would have to return? or because he's a fallen angel, he won't have to? This would definitely make a very interesting storyline.

I disagree about not holding Sam accountable for not looking for Dean while he was in Purgatory. I don't think I really approve of his reasons.. after the previous 7 seasons, I did not expect Sam to just abandon Dean, which in some sense is what he did. It wouldn't take a genius to deduce that Dean was in Purgatory after Crowley made that comment about being too close to the explosion would take you with it or something like that. Yes, it's true that Sam probably wouldn't have been able to do much to get Dean back, but that's not what this is about. It was about the bond they share, it was about Sam trying to get Dean back even if he didn't succeed. Anyway, I guess what's happened has happened and we can't change that. I'm just happy that the brothers are back to how they used to be - they trust each other.

And thanks, Husna, I feel like mostly I'm rambling but I'm glad you think that I get my thoughts across :)

@Sayanti - Yayyy for one more person who wants a happy ending for the boys! Thank you!! Honestly, one of the boys dying (and I mean not-coming-back-dying) breaks my heart.

@Sindhu - Love everything you said!! Sam finally protecting Dean and shutting hell to save his brother so both he and Dean would survive. Absolutely agree with everything you said!! You know I was talking about the same thing in another thread. I'm so worried about Sam... as it is, the trials are taking a toll on him and it is his turn to "die" this year.

BTW, LOVE the sigs you're using.

@L - Looking forward to your comments :)

^^ I didn't think of that. 😳 I wouldn't want Cass to go back forever, atleast not until the show's done with but whenever its done with, wouldn't that be the perfect closure for him? He's always wanted to be there, do good for his place, so what better than returning home peacefully? :) Yeah, it could get interesting and I am hoping for that.

I have gone through the same thoughts as well but I think I am over it now. As much as I could see Dean's reasons for being pissed off on Sam, I could also see where Sam was coming from. Even if he had figured that Dean was in Purgatory, he couldn't have done anything at all. There was no possible things he could or even get information from sources as all sources had diminished. He had also lost all his family and friends, what he possibly do? Nothing much, really.

Yes, I know it was about their bond and I wish too that they atleast showed Sam trying something, anything. But what's gone is gone and I don't think the creatives will touch that topic again. So I am not gonna blame Sam anymore and try and make peace with it.

And thanks, Husna, I feel like mostly I'm rambling but I'm glad you think that I get my thoughts across :)

Oh you do that, pretty well. :)
