We at BollywoodLife remember the Mughal-E-Azam star on her 80th birth anniversary today

Born on February 14, 1933, Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi, better known as Madhubala, was an iconic beauty of Hindi cinema. Her grace was unparalleled. Such was the charm of this evergreen diva that every time she stepped into the frame, the audiences stayed glued to the screens. Even today, many refer to her as the most beautiful woman of the Indian film industry and rightly so. Our Dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit-Nene, who's an ardent fan of the late actor, feels that Madhubala's mesmerising smile is the best the industry has ever seen. The diva of the black and white era coincidentally shares her birthday with Valentine's Day – a day that celebrates love.

Originally from Delhi, Madhubala made her Bollywood debut with the 1942 film Basant. The movie was a box office success and she got unparalleled fame that her contemporary actors could only dream of. Later, she acted in several blockbuster films in the 50s and early 60s including K Asif's epic Mughal-E-Azam, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Mahal, many of which attained a 'classic' status. The eternal beauty suffered from a non-curable heart ailment. In 1960, she sought treatment in London, but gradually her condition deteriorated, and the 36-year-old actor finally succumbed to her illness on February 23, 1969.

Madhubala is considered to be one of the most iconic Bollywood actresses of all times. Often referred to as the 'Venus Of Indian Cinema' the actress mesmerised many with her ethereal beauty and charm. The actress, who died of heart troubles at a very early age would have been 80-year-old had she lived today. However, she has been immortalised by her contributions to Indian cinema.

She has acted in 70 films and was a part of the all time classic movie Mughal-e-Azam. Her most memorable performances were in films like Neelkamal, Mr and Mrs '55 and Mahal. The actress, a reigning queen of 1950s, is also often compared to Ameriacn sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, who was an equally successful actress in Hollywood around the same time. Marilyn, coincidentally was called the 'Venus Of Hollywood'.

In fact, although these two actresses, mostly compared for their beauty and the iconic status they enjoyed in their respective industries have more in common than the way their locks fell on their foreheads and how their faces are now found on every couch cushion and pillow covers and is a part and parcel of popular art.

The two actresses, widely admired and adored by men all around the world, had kept their private lives under wraps and with several rumours that did rounds, the lives of the two most iconic women of 1950s — Madhubala and Marilyn Monroe are still mysteries for everyone.

Marilyn Monroe was the face of a promotional campaign for a luxury perfume from the house of Chanel even after her death. The Chanel bosses put together a new promo featuring previously unreleased pictures of the actress and unheard audio in which she explains her famous quote about wearing nothing but Chanel No. 5 in bed. While the famous film of Madhubala, Mughal-e-Azam, hit the screens 35 years after her death in a digitally colorized version.

Marilyn and Madhubala both wanted to be taken as serious actresses but were mostly praised for their mesmerising beauty and criticised for their acting talent. Although Madhubala did prove herself as a versatile actress, she mostly remained in demand for her good looks, likewise, Monroe's films mostly established her as a 'dumb blonde' although she wanted to do meaningful films.

Marliyn and Madhubala, both extensively made news because of their alleged affairs. In fact, these affairs later inspired filmmakers to make movies on these themes and films like My Week With Marilyn and Khoya Khoya Chand, based on Marilyn and Madhubala's life hit the screens.

These two women enjoyed international success too, with Marilyn not only being excessively successful in Hollywood but also overseas, while Hollywood filmmaker Frank Capra showing interest in Madhubala and the actress also appearing in many American magazines.

They both came out of poverty and became extremely successful actresses and is still adored and remember. Madhubala and Marilyn both have postage stamps featuring them.

The iconic Madhubala – 80 and alive in memory!Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: Had she been alive today, the legendary Madhubala would have turned 80 today. Born on Valentine's Day, the superstar was innumerable admirers' epitome of love and beauty. Sadly, the iconic star died young – but left an indelible mark in the minds of people, nevertheless.

If in India somebody has the unique distinction of appearing in the most number of successful films in the shortest period of time, it undoubtedly is Madhubala. A career spanning about eighteen years saw her delivering splendid performances in about 70 movies.

A much turbulent personal life and constant rumours of liaisons with many names in the industry caused considerable damage to the star's image. A fiasco involving Dilip Kumar, her then lover, and Madhubala turned exceeding bitter and resulted in the end of the relationship between the two actors. Her marriage to Kishore Kumar, too, was fraught with too many difficulties.

Madhubala shot to fame with her success in 'Mahal', and many remarkable films and stunning performances followed suit. Her performance in 'Mughal-e-Azam' won her much praise from her fans and critics alike.

Madhubala died following severe illness at the young age of 36 in 1969. Madhubala was once endowed with the honour of being the 'Biggest Star in The World' (Theatre Arts Magazine, August 1952). The actress is – and will always stay – alive in memory… Here's wishing her a very happy birthday!

She was considered the most beautiful actress of her time. Although not the best actress. Some may say she was the original Katrina Kaif. Although I'd say she's more beautiful than Katty - but acting wise Katty is better. Haters can kiss my...! 👍🏼
