(Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge )

Romance is alluring. Both in real and reel. Here goes a list of ten most romantic films in recent times

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak A tragic ending to a young love story can tug your heart in ways even the heart won't understand. Directed by Mansoor Khan, this film popularly known as QSQT was a star crossed love story between Raj ( Aamir Khan) and Rashmi ( Juhi Chawla) against a background of family feud and came as a breath of fresh air. In no time, songs like Aye mere hum safar, Papa kehte hain... were on everybody's lips and every teenager across the country secretly nourished a desire to visit Mt Abu.Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge Mushy storyline, soul-stirring music, chemistry at its sizzling best. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra in 1995, a hot romantic favorite. Since then, this film has featured in almost every must see romantic films' list in India. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) redefined romance in newly liberalised India when emotions were finding new landscapes.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Can your best friend with whom you play an exciting game of basketball be the person for whom your heart beats fast? Does friendship finally lead to love? These are not the questions that rocked the nation in 1998 but teenagers just couldn't have enough of these questions anyway. Even in his debut directorial venture, Karan Joharunderstood how to woo the young. No wonder then, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a movie that raked in big moolah at the BO and became a reference point for 'friendship laced' romance. Sleek direction, hummable music tracks and breezy performances by Shah Rukh Khan andkajol added much flavour to this love-story even as critics slammed it for pushing stereotypes.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Love becomes probably a tad more heart-warming when it involves a triangle. Desire becomes more desirable. Master story-teller Sanjay Leela Bhansali's fortune changed at the box office with this superb romantic flick titled Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (loosely based on Maitreyi Devi's Bengali novel Na Hanyate).

Jab We Met Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met is a story told with tenderness and honesty. There is nothing new in the story of a happy-go-lucky young girl meeting a brooding, heartbroken young business tycoon during a train journey. But Imtiaz with his keen eye for detail made it look mint fresh. The camera played perfect companion to the director. Not to mention the wonderful chemistry between Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur that made one's dil crave for more. The movie based on a love triangle between Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn was a visual delight with each frame competing with another. The end may have been predictable (as marriage wins over love), but who says predictability in romance can't be heart-warming? Excellent performances by Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn brought much laurel and awards to the film. In the midst of all glory and money, the film still wins in matters of heart.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, written and directed by Abbas Tyrewala was much loved by collegians for its cool urbane look and lingo. The romantic comedy which had a Touch of freshness and effortless performances by its actors added much life to the story-line. Debutant Imran Khan and Genelia D' Souza along with an ensemble cast managed to weave in a lot of varied emotions right from friendship, love to jealousy quite beautifully.

Namastey London He loves his Punjab. She's all British. And you think, they are just poles apart. But then there's something called love and that wins in the end. There's everything predictable about Namastey London €" the storyline, the moves and the stereotypes in place but it's still preferred by many as their favourite rom-com.

Maine Pyaar Kiya The film starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree created so much of buzz that a popular newsmagazine dubbed the movie as the 'film of the decade'. Most youngsters wanted to sport that 'friend' cap and in an age when there was no multiplex, no social networking sites, a film packed with dollops of love, friendship, longing and power-packed action gave romance almost a 'steroid' shot. This romantic film straight from Sooraj Barjatya's kitty was a sure shot winner right from the first frame.

Aashiqui Aashiqui, the title straightaway suggests romance. The film directed by Mahesh Bhatt was a commercial success in the 90s. Spontaneous performances by Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal gave a glimpse of urban life even as the protagonists were fighting their own battles. But in the end, it's not the story but the music that has stayed in people's heart, even after two decades.
Ek Duje Ke Liye Does love know any language? Not really. In the early 80s, language meekly submitted to the power of love as Vasu (Kamal Haasan) and Sapna (Rati Agnihotri) took romance to a new intimate level. Believe it or not, teenagers across small-town India spent hours switching off and switching on lamps in their rooms. Just to have a 'real' feel of that 'reel romance.' Needless to say, the film with a tragic love story went on to become a mega hit. Sometimes, from a distance in the darkness of a movie theatre, tragedy looks so very romantic.

Was this writer under the impression that Bollywood was formed in 1980...

I don't understand why BW writers think all movies were crap...Such a shame...Bollywood had given its finest movies in 50s-60s.

Nowadays writers are nothing but attention mongers..
