In her 10 year long and rather successful Bollywood career Aishwarya Rai has consistently essayed demure, quintessentially Indian roles, that emphasized her stunning good looks but not her svelte body. Even when she showed skin, she did so with muted sexuality.
What Rai has striven for all along is to develop her histrionic talent to a level that matches her good looks. Indeed, confident of her maturing talent, a couple of years back she dropped guard on maintaining a svelte form and put on a few extra pounds around her waist.
Rai's role as Sunehri in Dhoom 2, however, is a departure from the norm. She had to get back into shape to play a glamorous seductress in the western mould. Throughout the film she is attired in skimpy western clothes that reveal her now stunning figure.
While excited about playing an altogether different role Rai also appears circumspect, perhaps apprehensive that she may get to be tagged with the dubious title of India's sex symbol at this stage in her career.
Acknowledging that she plays a different role in Dhoom 2 Rai says, "I have so far largely played Indian characters...this appearance, in the western mould is definitely new."
In her recent appearances on TV to promote Dhoom 2 she has emphasized the character of Sunehri not her attire, "The best part is that it is not just about the look. Not just about makeup hair and clothes but the character. It is the kind of character that I have not played before."
The star obiviously does not want her fans to read too much from her attire.
Rai got the Sunehri role following her performance in the hit song Kajrare Kajrare.. in Bunty Aur Bubli. Aditya Chopra, who produced both Bunty Aur Bubli and Dhoom 2, sort of pulled her out of the demure girl closet for the Kajrare.. number to see how well she would fit into a glamorous role. She rocked, of course, and was rewarded with the Dhoom 2 role.
"Adi told me, 'You are always playing regal characters...'. He felt I should play Sunehri," Aish recalls.
Another interesting aspect of the Sunehri role in Dhoom 2 is the fact that Rai, for the first time, is paired with Hrithik Roshan. Both Roshan and Rai enjoy huge followings amongst their respective opposite sex and if a chemistry is evident in Dhoom 2 they could make a very successful pair.
