This is an old article as I have seen it before.
Doesnt make the practice any more despicable, but I'm interested in knowing your reason for posting it - is it for our information or do you have a point to make?

I agree with the majority here and reiterate that this is now unique to a religion. Poor parents compromizing their children -especialy daughters, I am sure happens in most religions. In USA a Utah preist was arrested 5-6 months ago for maarying underage girls to polygamists in Utah. If I say that 'Water' is not a typical depiction of a Hindu society - which BTW sarts with an underage girl being married off to an adult, I must accept that 'Bazaar' is not typical of Muslim society either - I didn't think so when I first saw it either.
What was shown in "Water' reflected a reality of Hindu India some 100 years ago, maybe even 50 years ago. The practice of sending widows to Banaras was more prevalent in Bengal. From the past 50 years, Hindu women have progressed a lot especially in urban areas. If you go to Bengal today, you will see widows wearing colourful dresses rather than the mournful white, remarrying and leading the same life as other women!
A great number of reforms have taken place among the Hindus and it is not tabboo to discuss age-old practises and their relevance. In fact, debate or tarka has always been a part of Hinduism. All the saints such as Shankaracharya, Madhvacharya, Guru Ramdas, Guru Nanak etc were people who never shied away from debates. Each of these saints advocated changes in religious and social practices. Even atheism has a place in Hinduism, there are no believers and non-believers.
Coming to 'Bazaar' I'd like to say that this movie definitely depicts the reality of the poor Muslims in Hyderabad, even today. "Nikaah" was another path-breaking movie which depicted the plight of Muslim women.
Being a viewbie, you might want to sound politically correct by saying that these practices exist in all religions. But certain religions which are more rigid than others have obviously not undergone reforms to the extent they would have if they were open. It is easier for malpractices to thrive in such conditions e.g.divorce by SMS. !-
brilliantly said Sahana!
very recently, we've had the Imrana rape case in the news as well. and going back some years there was the Shah Bano case. these all reflect the plight of women subject to the diktats of certain wise men, and is similar in some respects to this case. what makes these cases note-worthy to me is that these practices were sanctioned/ condoned by a religious law board or others in positions of authority.
