Are Sequels just easy money?

From my understanding most of the sequels are supposed to have the same characters with different situations.
Like in Dhoom 1 and 2, Abhishek-Uday form the central characters who chase criminals. The story is going to be like that for Dhoom-3 too. Race-2, Saif is there, the story is linked to the previous one.
But what about films like Murder 1, 2 ,3 or Raaz 1, 2, 3. The charaters change in every sequel and the story does not relate to the previous one.

Do you think its the "name" of the movie that helps it sell or is it the actual story. For example, if Murder-2 and Raaz-3 were called something else...I doubt that they would be successful.
Ok fine Murder might work because of the theme of Murder and Raaz with the them or secrets. But Even Jism-2 has no relevance to the first one and it was a hit. I feel as though lots of these directors (particulary the Bhatts) are including the "2" or "3" to give the film a head start. It seems like they dont even make any films anymore that arent sequels. Do you think Jism-2 would be succesful if it was titled something else?
Houseful-2 as well, yes Akshay-Ritesh are there, but their characters were different right. I just feel like its a easy way out to make money they know the film is going to do well, so they are not making as sequel in the attempts to take the story forward, its just being made to get some $$$.
Your thoughts? Do you think the title of the movie helps it sell?

Bollywood works a lot with brand name.

they also think if you like the genre of murder 1, you're sure to like the second.

but some sequels are awful

Yes. Sequels are just a desperate attempt to capitalize on the success of a movie. Most sequels are just tacky, stupid and have nothing to do with the original. I usually dread sequels, especially the Bollywood ones.

Personally, I view that sequels/prequels should be planned ahead of time and be an intentional extension of the storyline. I like the way the X-Men Series and the Avenger Series have built the stories. Most sequels can't do that.
