Quote: You're only as strong as the tables you dance on, the drinks you mix, and the friends you roll with <3.
Chapter 3: Titanium
"5, 6, 7, 8 What are you people doing?" Sharon said aggravated at the gang who wasn't in sync with their dance steps.
"Sharon what are you doing, the steps are not working out well." Rey said as he tried to follow the rhythm Sharon set. "On top of that our thin wall is gone so them staring at us is not helping either." Rey said pointing to Taani and Rohan who were patiently waiting for the dancers to tell them what songs they wished to dance on.
"What is so hard about these steps?" Sharon demanded to know. "You all can do steps ten times harder then these so why is this difficult? Come on, get your act together, now on 3." She demanded with hard eyes.
Taani watched mesmerized as Sharon strictly yelled at each and every dancer trying to get their choreography right.
"Yaar if we have to dance we are not having Sharon as our choreographer." Rohan whispered to Taani while watching Aashi dancing.
Taani snickered and said, "We could just get Aashi but then you wouldn't get any work done." Taani said with a grin as Rohan rolled his eyes and pushed her.
Taani went back to watching the dancers, even though she kept telling herself that she was watching them all, she knew her eyes were lingering at only one person. She thought back to their conversation last night, to how well Rey sang, to how much hurt was in his eyes when he talked about his dad.
"Guys this is not happening!" Sharon said stopping the gang from their rehearsals. "Taani come here." Sharon ordered breaking Taani out of her thoughts.
"What?" Taani asked confused.
"Here, now." Sharon said pointing to where she was standing. Taani immediately got up and went to Sharon not wanting to get on her bad side.
"See if you can follow these steps." Sharon said as she started breaking into her dance. Taani studied her for a moment and did exactly what she saw.
"Exactly, guys ya'll should be ashamed of yourselves Taani got the step down in 2 minutes and you can't even do it." Sharon shook her head.
"Well she was a bit tense and could have loosened up at the end kick." They heard a voice say from behind them.
Taani tensed up knowing that voice better than anyone else. She turned around to meet the eyes of her father. The father that she wanted nothing more to do with. The father who once she would have given her life for. The father who let her go to be with someone else. The father who has only criticized her.
"Aap." Taani said looking at him.
"Haan guys this is our new dance adviser. VP sir has brought him in to help us with our dance off. He is a very, very talented dancer who can help us a lot guys so let me introduce Ram sir." Sharon said.
He smiled at everyone and looked at Taani, "Taani your form was too stiff, I'm sure I taught you better than that."
Taani closed off her emotions and sarcastically said, "Was that before or after you left?"
"Taani," he sighed.
"How does Taani know this guy?" Nil asked Vicky from behind as they both continued to look at Taani visibly upset for the first time.
"Bhai we need to talk now." Taani said looking at Swayam for answers.
"Swayam can talk to you later Taani." Ram said trying to stop his daughter from storming out.
"Woah, wait up how do you even know him Taani." Rey asked breaking the tension in the room.
Ram smiled a genuine smile and said, "She's my daughter."
"What?" the gang asked not knowing how to react to that, they had always thought that Taani's dad was dead.
"Actually my dad died a year ago with my mom in an accident." Taani clarified looking at her dad in disgust. "You don't get to call yourself my father."
"Taani, please right now calm down I'll explain everything." Swayam said putting his hand on her shoulder.
Without taking a look at anyone Taani stormed out of the room.
"Swayam, why didn't you tell her I was coming?" Ram asked his newphew.
"Kyunki agar main ne bola hota ke aap aae rahe hai toh Taani college mein hi nahi aati." Swayam said. "Why don't you just give her some space right now." Swayam said before he left after Taani.
"What just happened?" Rey asked aloud wondering what could have gone wrong between Taani and her dad. After their talk yesterday he couldn't believe Taani didn't tell him that her biological dad was alive.
"Aashi tumhe toh pata hoga na." Sharon asked her.
Aashi looked away from them and looked at the floor, "No, why would you assume that?" she asked in a higher pitched voice than usual.
"Tum Taani ki best friend ho, we know you know." Nil said. "And there is only one way to find out, let's go find them." Nil said with a knowing look. There was one thing that the team knew how to do best, and that was eavesdropping.
Taani was breathing in anger and all she saw was red. "Why is he back now?" she yelled out into the empty classroom.
"Taani, listen to me. This is why he had called that day to tell us that he was coming." Swayam said quickly trying to calm his sister down.
"Aap jaante the? How could you hide this from me Bhai!" Taani said looking at Swayam accusingly.
"Taani pehle calm down. I know I should have told you earlier but you need to listen to me." Swayam replied knowing that this topic got under his sister's skin. He didn't like the situation either, but they were going to have to deal with it.
"Bhai aap jaante hai na ke unhone kya kiya tha humare saath." Taani said, "Bhai you may forgive him but I will never forgive him, ever. It's because of him I hate dance!" Taani yelled before trying storming out of the room.
Swayam grabbed his sister's arm and held her back, "Taani you are going to have to let that go someday. He is trying to be here for you so why don't you give him a chance?" Swayam asked.
"For me?" Taani looked at Swayam is disbelief. "Unbelievable Bhai you really think he's here for me. He is here for the one thing that is important to him, and that is dance."
"Taani beta, that's not true." Ram said coming into the room. Unaware of what was going on outside, Taani Swayam and Ram stood in the classroom while the entire gang listened on from outside.
"You are not welcome here." Taani said with attitude towards her father.
"You now I have never seen Taani so angry, even with Rey it's always a more playful type anger." Simi said.
"Taani please, I've tried to contact you for the past fifteen years, I've wrote you letters, I've called." Ram tried again.
"Really Dad? Oh I almost forgot to ask how is the step monster?" Taani asked with a sarcastic smile.
"She's good, it's nice of you to ask. She's actually wanting'" He started to say before being cut off.
"Dad I don't care I just really wanted to say step monster." Taani said.
Ram took a deep breath in and said, "Taani I tried to connect with you through dance, but you are the one who threw it all away."
"You want to know why Dad." Taani said not believing that he was blaming her for their messed up relationship. "Because every single time I danced you only saw the bad in it, but Sheila's daughter was the only daughter you wanted right. The only thing you did was criticize me. And what happened when you learned about my passion for music."
"You're angry at me for yelling at you Taani." Ram said raising his voice.
"No, see what I mean. I'm angry at you for leaving. But you know what you leaving was the best thing that's every happened to me because in exchange for that I got a great father who taught me what it was like to be loved and to spread love." Taani said.
"Taani it wasn't like that and you know it. I tried everything to keep our relationship together but you kept pushing me away." Ram said.
"Then you should have tried harder!" Taani yelled. "You were the adult! You should have understood my passion for music and supported it instead of pushing me to do something I didn't want. You shouldn't have mocked my talent and taunted me every time we were together. You should have been a dad to me before being a dad to Sheila's daughter. You know Sheila's daughter has her real father, her mother, and you after her mom's divorce, but after yours and mom's divorce I only got mom and my dad. You should have been there for me all those times when he was." Taani said with tears streaming down her face.
"You should have been the one chasing away my nightmares, you should have been the one that told me it was okay after my first heart break, you should have been the one at all my birthdays. Forget one birthday, you didn't show up for any. All you cared about was your new perfect dancing daughter right, well congratulations you got what you wanted, you got rid of me." Taani said.
"Taani this is not all true, your parents they hid something from you." Swayam said.
"Bhai I know, I've seen the letters." Taani said surprising him. "I know Bhai, I know that they forgave him for what he did to us. But they weren't the ones who saw his clear disappointment when I sat down at the piano and started playing my music, they weren't the ones who saw him push me away for Nisha." Taani said.
"What?" both Ram and Swayam said.
"Dad why don't you go home to Sheila and Nisha, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to know that I want nothing to do with you. You are free I have no expectations from you." Taani said.
"Taani please, we've always had an open door for you. I'm trying here, what more do you want from me?" Ram yelled at her.
"I wanted you to be this amazing father, but you were just a disappointment, and I will never forgive you for putting me down, for breaking my confidence and for breaking my family." Taani said before she stormed out of the room.
The gang had scattered to the rehearsal hall quickly when they heard Taani storming out of the room. Rey had quickly pulled the wall between the music room and the rehearsal hall closed because he knew that Taani would want some alone time in the music room to vent her anger.
"Her dad," Simi said in disgust. "How could he do that to her?"
"I've never seen Taani this upset. The face that's always smiling, she doesn't deserve that." Nil agreed.
Rey could relate to Taani, after all his own dad was no saint. But seeing Taani torn apart in that room made his heart ache, and all he could think about was how she must be feeling at the moment.
"Hey guys," Swayam said sadly walking in there. "I know you were listening so you don't need to pretend to be surprised." Swayam said after studying their faces after a while.
"Swayam why didn't you ever tell us about this?" Sharon asked him as he sat down.
"Honestly, yeh meri behen ki life hai. It's her past, if she didn't want anyone to know then I wouldn't tell anyone. Besides what would I even have said, that my uncle screwed her over and her step dad saved her from drowning in her sadness. You know I thank god everday that Raj uncle came into her life, he didn't only teach her music, he taught her music that ended up being her therapy, it's what saved her." Swayam explained.
"Aashi tumhe pata tha na?" Nil asked her as she nodded her head.
"Taani ne mujhe bataya tha. We're best friends and when she had been upset about him, she had told me." Aashi said.
"Abhi Taani ko shaant karna hoga, I don't want her to stress about this." Swayam said.
"I'll go," Rey said making everyone give him a look. "What you guys know that I am the only one that can actually calm her down, let me go talk to her." Rey explained. Knowing that Rey was right the gang let him leave to find Taani.
Knowing that the only place Taani went when she wanted to be alone was the fire exit Rey made sure to look for her there. He found her there sitting on the staircase looking at no apparent point on the wall. Closing the door he walked down beside her and sat next to her.
"You don't need to be here." Taani said knowing who it was.
"I know," Rey responded as he pulled up his sleeves.
"I don't want him here." Taani said with tears pricking her eyes. "I don't want him anywhere near me."
"I know," Rey said again, this time he put his arm around her and pulled her into him.
"I can't forgive him for breaking me into pieces." Taani said as tears slightly into Rey's shirt. Pulling back Taani looked at Rey and said, "It killed me when he left and when he didn't believe that I had musical talent. It was like I wasn't special to him anymore because I didn't want to follow his dream."
Rey's heart went out to Taani as he pushed a lock of hair behind her ear, "I can't imagine anyone thinking that you're not special." Rey said getting pulled into an eye lock with Taani.
"Alright come on." Rey said getting up and giving Taani a hand up breaking their eye lock.
"What?" Taani asked him confused at the change of tsopic.
"There is only one thing that will make you feel better right now." Rey said as he lead her towards rehearsal hall. Rey pointed at the piano that belonged that stationed at the end of the room by the paper wall that separated the groups. "Go on, play whatever you want. Pretend that through this song you are telling your dad that you don't need him anymore." Taani gave Rey a weird look and Rey rolled his eyes and sat her down, "Let out your feelings." He said as he went to take his shirt off.
Taani's eyes widened as she covered her face, "Rey what are you doing!" she yelled.
Rey laughed at her, "Oh god Taani you should have seen your face." He kept laughing until his stomach hurt. "Taani you said that singing and dancing go together, so I'll dance to whatever you sing." Rey said taking off his shirt leaving him in a white wife beater.
"Rey I'm really just not in the mood." Taani said getting up.
Rey forcefully sat her down, "Taani I know that singing is the only thing that can make you feel better, you are going to sing."
Rey walked towards the center of rehearsal hall leaving Taani at the piano. Taani turned towards the piano and let her fingers touch the keys. Opening her eyes she started singing,
You shout aloud
But I can't hear the words you say
Rey listened to the piano and decided to go with contemporary dancing. He moved to the side and swiftly laid on the ground, only sway thrice as he got up.
I'm talking loud not saying much
I'm criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down but I get up
Using the music and Taani's singing Rey allowed himself to dance along with the song.
I'm bulletproof nothing to lose
Fire away fire away
Ricochet you take your aim
Fire away fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium, shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
Taani continued singing with tears in her eyes. Hearing the hurt and passion in her voice let Rey dance with his emotions attached to hers. He danced for her pain, he danced for his pain, he danced for both of them.
Stone heart machine gun firing out the ones who run
Stone heart this bullet proof vest
You shoot me down but I won't fall I am titanium
Shoot me down but I won't fall I am titanium
Shoot me down but I won't fall I am titanium
Shoot me down but I won't fall I am titanium
Both of them finished in perfect sync and at the end of it, Taani had felt better. Unknown to both of them, the gang had watched them and had seen how beautiful their performance was.
"Feeling better?" Rey asked while taking a sip from his water bottle. Taani nodded and smiled a small smile.
Seeing her somewhat smile Rey grinned, "A small smile is better than nothing at all." He thought.
Swayam and Taani were in the corridor of their college and Swayam looked over at his sister's sullen face.
"Taani he's probably going to be waiting for you at home." Swayam said not liking the fact that this man was hurting his sister all over again.
"Bhai, I just'" Taani trailed off not knowing what to say.
"Taani whether you like it or not you only have one way to de-stress and that is dance." Swayam said knowing his sister way too well, "Why don't you stay here, no one will be here anymore and just dance in the rehearsal hall to let out some steam?" he suggested.
"Bhai I don't know." Taani said unsure.
"Taani instead of thinking of dance as something that your dad ruined for you, maybe you should try finding a way to think of it as something that brought you a new positive aspect of life." Swayam said. "Taani stay here, maybe you'll find some peace." Swayam said dropping Taani to the rehearsal hall.
Precap:
"All of you will are as of now have forced attendance on this overnight college retreat." AVP said.
"This fighting has to stop now! This retreat will be mandatory especially for the dancers and the singers and hopefully through this you can try to get along." AVP said leaving the kids in their mess.
