It is a must for films to go through the Censor Board prior to release. This is done to categorize the film based on the content it holds, and the age group of the audience that it would appeal to.
Sometimes, however, some films cause controversies that go beyond the Censor Board. This can happen through what the film promises to be about, a simple statement made by the people associated with it, etc.
In certain cases, there may even be bans placed on the screenings of films just because it is said to hurt the sentiments of some.
For example, take the recent case of Vishwaroopam where the TN government has banned its release for 15 days. The reason being the concern of the depiction of terrorists and terrorism
My question is: Are all these bans fair? Do they not seem a bit too far-fetched at times?
I feel that the recent ban on Vishwaroopam is completely unfair 👎🏼 Vishwaroopam is not the first, and definitely NOT the last film to show terrorists. Yes, films in the past have shown terrorism, but they have attempted to NOT hurt the sentiments of any cultures.
Plus, many Indian films do have their story-lines based on the fight against terrorism, yet there weren't many protests then. So why the sudden outburst now?
Surprisingly, many films surrounding terrorism after this may even go unnoticed by the public about the theme it carries, yet a few movies in between (like Vishwaroopam) would be targeted for its content. 👎🏼
Furthermore, isn't it too early to judge how a film would be before its release?
In connection to this issue, shouldn't movies be raising awareness as well?
It is hard to deny that movies do have a greater impact on the audience. If a serious issue is presented in the right way, it can definitely educate the society about some facts they may have never known. Yet, some of these movies that are meant to raise awareness also end up having to deal with controversies.
Note: This topic is not mainly about Vishwaroopam. I just used this as an example to talk about some bans/restrictions on films that occur. Please kindly refrain from indulging in discussion involving religion.
