Adopted on the 26th November, 1949, the Indian Constitution came into effect on the 26th of January, 1950. Originally consisting of 395 Articles in 22 parts and 8 schedules, it now has 448 Articles.

The Constitution declares India to be a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic, assuring its citizens of Justice, Equality, Liberty and endeavors to promote Fraternity among them. The words "socialist" and "secular" were added to the definition in 1976 by constitutional amendment.

Today, on the 26th of January, 2013, India celebrates Sixty Four years of being a Republic.

SIXTY FOUR years of Self Rule.
SIXTY FOUR years of Self Governance.
SIXTY FOUR years of Pride.
SIXTY FOUR years of Democracy.
SIXTY FOUR years of Rule-Of the people, By the people, For the people.

So, how has India progressed in these years?

India has made the number of Doctors tenfold.
The Green Revolution made India self sufficient in food grains.
Advancements in Nuclear and Atomic Science are one of the crowning glories of India.
Space Technology has helped India reach the moon.
Infrastructure has improved since Independence.

"A 25 year of lady lawyer was found dead in her flat in Central Mumbai- the accused: Her building's watchman"

"A group of 30 people molest and manhandle a teenage girl outside a bar on 9th July, 2012 in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam"

"A 23 year old physiotherapy student is raped in a moving bus on 16th December, 2012, in the capital city of Delhi."

"A 45 year old was gangraped and killed by 6 men in West Bengal, her husband poisoned."

"A minor raped in Gujrat, a day after the 23 year old paramedical student dies."

"With Every Right, Comes A Duty"

Clearly, many of us have forgotten this rule.

As Indian citizens, it is our
duty..
..to uphold and protect the unity, sovereignty and integrity of India
..to protect the dignity of women
..to defend the country and help her improve

How many of us do REMEMBER these?
How many of us FULFILL our duties?
How many of us go and caste our VOTE?
How many of us DON'T VIOLATE the rules?
How many of us pay our TAXES- honestly?

Ask Yourself : Can YOU demand Justice when you yourself don't perform your duties?
Ask Yourself: Can YOU say you are living in a Democracy when you don't vote?
Ask Yourself: Can YOU blame everyone for India's non-progress in the social structure?

We hear many saying,
"Yaar, yeh country ka kuch nai ho sakta!" (Nothing can happen of this country!)
"Kuch nai hone waala, kiske paas itna time hai?" (Nothing is going to happen, who has the time?)
"Ek vote se kuch nai hota re!" (Nothing happens with a single vote!)

Change is Inevitable. And, Change begins at Home.

Let Us All Pledge.

PLEDGE to help this country attain what it deserves.
PLEDGE to make India truly Democratic.
PLEDGE to Respect Women, her dignity her integrity.
PLEDGE to fulfill our Duties.
PLEDGE to never demean our country, its resources and to always work for the country's progress.

With the death of an innocent 23 year old student in the National Capital creating National Awakening, we can say that India is not far from being TRULY INDEPENDENT.
INDEPENDENT of people who treat women as tools.
INDEPENDENT of a shameful mindset.
INDEPENDENT of having a rape capital.
INDEPENDENT of all social evils.

Let us make India a better country, a better nation!
Happy 64th Republic Day!
