This stems from some of my other topics.
Saif for instance, lives under the perception that chemistry is "discomfort" between two people who dont know each other well translating into ZING onscreen.

Thats his view and I totally disagree.
So what is onscreen chemistry?
Is it something that just naturally exist between some people and not others, or can it be created through the script and screenplay?

And how does this tie into the fact that some onscreen couples have good chemistry in one film, and blaaahh chemistry in another?

DIscuss 😃

I think chemistry is created through screenplay.
How the characters interact, how the camera CAPTURES their interaction, if the romance is convincing. It's in the body language and behavior.
For example, Intiaz Ali knows how to create chemistry between his characters. His characters are flawed, confused, but shown being pulled towards one another.
All his films had chemistry between the lead pair.
Whether it was Abhay-Ayesha, Shahid-Kareena, Saif-Deepika, Ranbir-Nargis.

None of the characters that Saif-Kareena enacted ever focused on their love story. There was never any longing in any of their stories.
She was with Akshay in Tashan, in Kurbaan they got marrie within the first 10 mins and the film became a thriller with no further scenes between them, and Agent Vinod had no scope whatsoever. There was no romance. An the whole film failed to click so forget the lead pair.

That's another thing. The popular perception of a good onscreen Jodi is usually in a film that works.
Srk-Kajol, Salman-Karisma, Juhi-Aamir, Saif-deepika, Shahid-Kareena...all these examples are from films which were loved.
Which means that if the overall film works, everything in it get appreciated including pairing.
If the film fails, so does the pairing.

And also, he's totally confusing two different concepts. What does the boxoffice fate of a film have to do with onscreen chemistry?
He mentions how none of the films they did together worked...well...that doesnt mean that onscreen chemistry didnt work. And furthermore, the fact that the films didnt work impacts a pairing.
Either way, I totally disagree with him.

He claims comfort level impacts performance.
He cites the example of his onscreen pairing with Rani working because he didnt really talk to her much on the sets.
Ok...but then what about his onscreen chemistry with Preity? They were GREAT friends, and were practically glued to each other offscreen during Salaam Namaste.
Shahid-Kareena were also an offscreen couple, but their pairing worked so well together in Jab We Met, but failed in three other films.

All of these examples completely go against Saif's theory. I'm actually shocked he has such staunch belief in it.

it is the most overrated, overused and annoying term on IF...

therz no such thing as "onscreen chemistry" between two actors as far as im concerned...its all the situations, dialogues, background score and the overall mood created by the director...

I agree with saif ! The chemistry depends on the actors ! Cos if the chemistry depended entirely on directors then how come many couples have chemistry even in bad films ??

I think a good onscreen chemistry needs too things to work

1) Chemistry between characters!

Like you said as well the writer/director needs to be good at either writing charaters who have good chemistry between them and a good director who can help protroy that well. Imtaziz is good with that that's why in all his films the chemistry gets appreciated!

2) Pyshicaly look good together!
the two actors need to look good together with there looks cause not only the characters can make the chemistry work!
For example say a movie like DDLJ instead of Kajol we had Bipasha doing the role? The chemistry wouldn't be good as SRK and Kajol!

Nice topic 😊

Like what?

The audiences hated Salman-Kareena in Main Aur Mrs. Khanna.
The audiences loved them in Bodyguard.

Audiences thought Shahid-Kareena had no chemistry and looked mismatched in 36 Chinatown, Fida, Chup Chupke.
In JWM, they became the cutest things since sliced bread.

Audiences loved Rani-Saif in Hum Tum.
No one thought anything of their jodi in Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic.

Audiences loved Saif-Deepika in Cocktail and Love Aaj Kal.
Nobody said anything about them in Aarakshan.

So what happened?
Did they all get surgery done on their body parts that caused some chemical change? 🤓

Imtiaz Ali - PERFECT example of what I'm talking about.
All of Imtiaz's characters have GREAT onscreen chemistry. Even when he worked with actors who previously had NO chemistry supposedly in their films (Shahid-Kareena)

Coz IMO, he creates characters that really project the longing that makes audiences FEEL.
Abhay-Ayesha
Shahid-Kareena
Saif-Deepika
Ranbir-Nargis

All his characters. That's the power of screenplay 😃
