Paradise

She's tired of this facade she's been putting on ever since she stepped into this new country. She hates the fact that everything is gleaming above fraudulent depths. She's disgusted at how people tend to overlook everything. Land of dreams, paradise, they call it. She scoffs at the thought.

Teenager stabbed to death.

The headlines filter through her mind as a picture plasters itself behind them. Who could be next, she wonders as she watches the soft ice cascade around her in tiny drop sized balls. Where could it be next? Maybe her, maybe right now.

A wisp of cloud forms in the air before drifting away, as she sighs.

Accosted in the park, as he may have been heading home.

No one was safe. No, scratch that. Anyone who didn't belong was at threat. Anyone with a different accent, with different looks, with a different skin colour and the list could go on. They got along so well. Big dreams, he had. High hopes and great expectations. He never smoked. He never drank. He never wished ill for anyone. And yet he was the one targeted.

Not a case of robbery as his possessions were still on him.

Her boots sink into the crisp, fresh surface that's been created by the snow. She applies more pressure on the ground but has hit hard rock.

"Tch." She gives up.

Memories of a bloodied face slap through her inner eye forcing her stomach to jolt. She'd be retching by now if her body had any undigested remains. The cold goes up through to the inner construction of her bones, but she forces herself to remain seated on the bench. How easy can it get for people to take lives, she wonders bringing her gloved fingers to the mouth? The hot breath warms them momentarily and she dismisses the action.

A sudden vibration in her pocket pushes her back to the present time, out of the state of limbo she's experiencing.

"Hi Dad."

"Where are you? You aren't online. You got me worried."

"Still at the university. Give me half an hour, I'll be home."

"Okay."

She cuts the phone. How many phone calls did he get from his family? She wonders. What did his dad go through? His family? She wouldn't know though. But that doesn't stop him from having someone concerned back home. In this sea of ignorance that everyone lives in, no one cares. No one gives a damn what the others go through.

She stands up abruptly.

A voice calls her and she recognizes it as she turns. His blue eyes contrast against the pale skin, and fairy tale white background. His dimples appear softly and he directs a small smile to her.

"It's late." He informs her in a husky voice.

Well done Sherlock, she thinks back. But she doesn't have the energy to start an intellectual one on one, so ignores him. Seeing him reminds her of him. Well not exactly. More of them. What they used to be like. The three of them. And now look what they were. Nostalgia hits her like a blow and she feels the unshed tears threaten their entrance.

She had a different bond with him. Because both of them didn't belong here.

"Should I walk you home?"

He shouldn't be afraid. He belongs here. Born and bred. But she can tell he also fears it all. Because sometimes it doesn't matter who you are, whether you have a family in this country or another, or if you hold a passport that states you belong. As long as you have a different skin colour, you're a target.

Teenagers should be very careful when walking in deserted areas in the middle of the night.

"We'll take the long way." He insists and she forms a smile up at him.

The relation between them is different too. Her heart skips every time he talks to her. She feels short of breath every time he touches her. These feeling have been pushed aside for a long time. And she doesn't expect much now. Especially not now, when it's been a good two years since they first met.

The walk takes about fifteen minutes, but she wishes it took longer. It's filled with complete comfortable silence while she mulls over the events that occurred a month back. She can't stop images roughing up in her mind.

"Who were you talking to?" the gruff voices in hoodies threatened dangerously.

"Aren't I allowed to talk on the phone?" he answered back determinedly, just before he sneaked a small look to the bushes he threw her behind. Her heart was beating erratically as she stayed statue still.

"Cheeky mouth. Going to cost you."

She stops suddenly, forcing her companion to do the same and look back. The dams break as she remembers hearing the blows, the thuds and finally, his last words.

"I know you love him. Tell him." He gasped while his head lay on her lap. She'd called 911, and was waiting. "I love you." The thick grass absorbed the blood as she silently watched his life being snatched away, second by second.

She barely remembers what happened next. Sirens? His closed eyes as he took his ultimate breath? She being dragged away from the corpse?

She takes a deep breath as she watches him walk back to her, concern filled in those electrifying oceanic eyes.

"Heyy.. it'll be alright. You'll get through it." He takes her in a hug. It's the safest she's ever felt, she decides letting the white flakes drop around her and soak into her hair as the waterproof hood slips down. His own gloved hands soothe her as he rubs them up and down her back. There's no need for words. He's been there for her all through. When she realizes she's crying no more, she makes up her mind to follow his last advice and pulls back.

"I,.." Her heart is drumming too much for her to think properly. So she hesitates.

"Yes?" he whispers, and they're so close she can almost taste his minty breath.

"I'm glad you're still here."

"I always will be." He assures her.

And she looks up into his eyes once more. But whatever is there shocks her beyond belief. It's the first time she's seen him looking at her that way. Swallowing once, she feels herself wet her lips while constantly forcing her gaze to withdraw from his. No chance.

The hammering in her chest doesn't cease as he slowly inches forward, giving her time to turn back if she would. She doesn't. She's wanted this for too long. He puts his lips on hers. And it's been worth the wait completely. It finally hits her that he's been where she was all along. If only once she looked more thoroughly. He pulls her closer in the sea of pristine, ethereal white that's engulfed them.

With a start it suddenly hits her. Not all of the world is bad. Not everyone, hateful.

More witnesses are urged to come forward so that intolerable crime like this can be banished from our country once and for all.

Some people just haven't realized the essence and the true beauty of love, she concludes.

As they pull apart he rests his head on her forehead, his dimples deep, and tells her the words she's been dying to hear.

"I love you."

And slowly, carefully, she repeats the same words back to him.

"I love you too."

He pulls her closer in a warm hug. That's where she's always wanted to be. And somehow, she can safely come to terms with what people call this feeling. Paradise.

Paradise - Coldplay

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so
She ran away in her sleep
And dreamed of
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise
Every time she closed her eyes

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach
And the bullets catch in her teeth
Life goes on, it gets so heavy
The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear a waterfall
In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly

And dream of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
She'd dream of
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

La-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
And so lying underneath those stormy skies
She'd say, "oh, ohohohoh I know the sun must set to rise"

This could be
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
This could be
Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

After reading this I could of nothing else but that Love is beautiful and it's around...you just need to look for it, and as soon as you find it grab it...it micht vanish in thin air as if it was never there...
The os further reminded me of some of my fantasies about friendship and love which I may not share here... ;)
Sanna I have already told repeated number of times how much you have grown as a writer and its like an honor to be present to watch you grow...
Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful pieces of work with us

Love
