I really admire Vidya and Priyanka, I actually really like them a lot. They did amazing Kahani and Barfi, but EV was something else. Sridevi is something else, she is a living legend! During her peak she was often cited as the female Amitabh Bachchan.
I really feel sorry for the industry for not recognizing her talent and worth. Its very saddening and if I was a woman in the film industry, I would find this demoralizing. Sridevi's loss just proves that the industry only appreciates actresses during their peak. After 20 years Vidya and Priyanka are going to experience the same thing.
Sridevi's win, would not only represent victory for her own talent, it would have symbolized a victory for all of the female actresses in the industry. The oldest winner of the best actress award, is Nutan, back in 1978 when she was 42 years old. At that time the film industry was not about glamour and it was not as competiive and race-rat-like as it is today. There was not much competition for Nutan at that time, so her win makes sense. After that its been downhill, all the awards have become all about young hot-shot actresses winning and the whole who knows who game.
Sridevi could have created history. Her victory could have changed the game, it could have taken a step in the right direction, it could have given motivation to all the actress then even at age 50, it is possible! Her win could have made a huge social statement. The impact of it would've been massive. But no,in the year 2013, we still take a step back and support regressive thinking.
All I can say is Sridevi's loss at the awards, is not a loss for English Vinglish, Gauri, or Sridevi...Its a loss for the industry and I really feel sorry for Bollywood.
