"Prashant," Aarti
whined on her way to college, "Why not?"
"Because I can't
Aarti! I have to study...I have my final exam next week. Your course is
finished but mine isn't," he told her, giving her a regretful look.
Aarti sighed. On
one hand, she was upset that Prashant wasn't coming with her to the party. What
would she do there alone? It wasn't like she wanted to waste her time with
random drunkards from her university. However, on the other hand, she was glad
that he was paying attention to his studies because that would mean a better
future for both of them later on.
"That's what you get for taking engineering,"
she mumbled. Engineering and medical students
were the only ones left to finish writing their exams because of their heavy
course loads. Aarti was glad that she hadn't resorted to either of those fields.
She wasn't sure if she would be able to cope with all the stress. She was
perfectly happy with her choice to pursue the arts in university.
"Come on babes,
I'll make it up to you," Prashant said in his regretful tone before he took her
hand and squeezed it.
"I'm waiting for
it," she replied, looking into his eyes with her own fierce ones. She was challenging
him.
"If I don't?" he
teased her.
"Then I won't marry you," she teased back.
"Ouch, you hurt my
ego Aarti," he laughed.
They laughed all
the way to university hand in hand. As soon as they arrived, they noticed Yash
Scindhia with his arm around Arpita Jain. They were headed towards one of the
buildings. Yash and Arpita were also best friends like Aarti and Prashant, but Aarti
thought that there was something going on between them. Something they kept
secret. She and Arpita used to be close. They drifted apart over the years but they
still socialized on a regular basis. She made a mental note to ask her about Yash the next
time they spoke.
"Prashant, do you
think Yash and Arpita are secretly... you know, together?" Aarti whispered to him.
"Like us?"
Prashant grinned.
"We aren't officially together Prashant, just
because we want to get married to each other doesn't mean we're together,"
Aarti told him and rolled her eyes as if it was so obvious.
"No Aarti, it
means we're together," Prashant firmly said. "If we weren't together then we wouldn't
do half the things we did."
"Like what?" she
asked innocently, pretending to be oblivious.
"You know what I'm
talking about Aarti!" he told her impatiently.
"No I don't," she replied,
showing him her most angelic face.
"Do you want a
demonstration?" he asked, with raised eyebrows. Then he started to lean close
to her without waiting for her answer.
"Prashant!" Aarti shrieked.
"We're at uni!"
Her heart started
to beat faster and she could feel her palms begin to sweat. It wasn't like they
hadn't kissed before, they had, but every kiss they shared made her feel
this way.
Prashant chuckled
and leaned even closer, causing her heart to beat feverishly against her
ribcage.
"First admit that
we're together," he instructed in a low voice.
"Fine, we're
together!" Aarti yelled and released her hand from his.
"I have to go," she added shyly, then walked
away, holding the books that she had to return to the library protectively to
her chest.
A smiling Aarti
walked towards the library lost in her thoughts. She was about to enter the building
when she bumped into someone who happened to be leaving at that moment. Her
books fell to the ground with a thud.
"Sorry," she quickly
said. Then she looked up into the eyes of Yash Scindhia.
