After today's adorable epi .. ... I was inspired to write ... hope it meets your expectations ... 😳
He went straight to the Pandit. He waited patiently till the Pandit was done with the morning Pooja.
Finally, the Pandit came over to him and said, "What is it my boy ?" You seem so restless and preoccupied, what is bothering you ?
"Did you know Meera & I were wed as children?" asked Prithvi bluntly.
"If you mean Dhata's daughter, then yes, I knew about that." said the Pandit carefully.
"And did you know that the girl who came from the city claiming to be Datha's daughter was telling the truth, and that Datha hid the fact that his wife and daughter were alive?" persisted Pritnvi.
"Ahhh '. So my guess was right, I did suspect that the girl was telling the truth but I was not sure" said the Pandit softly.
"Why didn't you tell me ?" demanded Prithvi angrily.
"Do you ever listen to anyone other than your Datha with an open mind ?" retorted the Pandit."You made up your mind that the girl was lying and that was that".
Prithvi let out a long breath and ran his fingers through his hair.
"Datha is going to tell the villagers the truth. He has also arranged for someone to speak to the villagers about Sudha Takurain's innocence. Once they are settled in the haveli, Meera is going back to Delhi to marry her fiance ..."
"Marry ?? How can she do that ? She is already wed to you !" exclaimed the Pandit.
"Panditji, you know that I'm not marriage material, besides Meera loves that guy. So it's better that she goes back to Delhi and marries her fiance. I just need help to keep the villagers appeased till she goes back. I don't want them clamoring for her to set up house with me and live here!"
"Prithvi, you don't understand, when I heard about your forced marriage all those years ago, probably I was the only one who was not shocked about it. I have seen both your horoscopes and it's impossible to find another pair that match so well. Whether you two like it or not you were destined to be together. And mark my words nothing either of you does will change that."
"Are you saying that we should accept his marriage and live together? Can you really see that happening?" asked an exasperated Prithvi,
"I am not saying anything, you are a couple whose marriage was made in heaven and nothing on earth will change that." said the Pandit with finality in his voice and walked away.
Prithvi swore under his breath and yelled "That's right walk away when I need your help. And you call yourself my friend"
The Pandit turned back and looked at Prithvi in the eye, "I am your friend, which is why I'll not support any of your hare-brained schemes to separate the two of you from each other".
And he walked towards his house.
Frustrated Prithvi banged his fist on the pillar.
"So, my plan of asking the Pandit for help failed"
Prithvi whirled around, there was Meera looking at him, disappointment writ large on her face.
"What are you doing here?" he demanded.
"Same as you, I wanted to ask the Pandit to help us. By the way, why doesn't he want to help us?" asked Meera curiously.
"He feels it's not right" said Prithvi brusquely, He then turned and left the temple in a hurry.
There he goes again, walking out on me ! thought Meera crossly.
She ran after him and called, "What do we do now ?" He was about to get into his jeep.
"You tell me, you had it all figured out didn't you?" he asked irritably.
"And have you spoken to your Mother or your fiance ? he continued.
"I .. er, couldn't get Mom on the phone" she said lamely.
"And you fiance ?" he pressed.
She lowered her gaze, "No"
He swore under his breath and banged his fist on the bonnet.
"What is wrong with you ? Can't you see your Mom and your fiance are two of the most important people in this whole charade, you need their support!" he shouted with exasperation.
She stood there eyes downcast, not wanting him to read the uncertainty in her eyes.
He let out a long breath and walked up to her, holding her by the shoulders, he spoke in a gentle voice:
"Look Meera, once the villagers get to know the truth, you cannot stem the tide of opinions, and the pre-dominant one would be that we live together as husband & wife. We both know that is impossible. You need to act fast. Your mother should know what to expect when she comes here. And you fiance has the right to know that you are going to live here till the wedding and also why that is necessary."
Slowly Meera looked up into his eyes, there was so much tenderness in his look and touch. She had never seen this side of him before. And before she knew it she had locked her hands around his waist, buried her face in his chest and was bawling her eyes out.
She was so overwhelmed by all the events in the past couple of days. She had kept all her fears and misgivings bottled up. And now this tender gesture of Prithvi had broken her resolve to be brave and face everything.
He went rigid for a moment and then slowly he gathered her in a comforting hug. He knew she was at the end of her tether and needed a shoulder to cry on. Literally and figuratively, he sighed.
He let her cry till her sobs had quieted down and then gently held her away from him, she looked up and him with tear stained eyes, "I'm sorry", she sniffed."I don't know what came over me".
"That's OK ", he said gravely. "You needed to get that out of your system".
She stepped back and wiped her eyes with the end of her dupatta. "I'll just go to the well and wash my face", she mumbled and fled as he nodded.
She needed to get away from him. What a fool he must think her to be !
Prithvi turned to get into the jeep and saw the Pandit standing there. He had a smile on his face that said 'I told you so'.
Prithvi glared at him and got into the jeep. "Don't say a thing" he hissed as the Pandit walked up to him.
"I won't" assured the Pandit "You'll realize soon enough, that I spoke the truth".
And he walked away with a smile.
Soon a composed Meera returned and got into the jeep. She didn't dare look at him. He started the jeep and headed for the haveli.
