Prologue: Monster

She ran as fast as she could, letting the quiet tears leave her eyes. She couldn't bear him any more. Her life had been made her joke and she just had enough. He had tortured her, made her feel as if everything that was wrong, was all her fault.
Just her fault. And she had believed it as well.
He couldn't find his clean shirt - Her fault.
He had to beat her - because it was her fault!
She had a miscarriage - it was only her fault, just hers!
How could she bear it any longer? Her marriage was an insolent joke, the sindoor on her forehead was no longer a ritual of marriage, but simply a red colour she put on. She hastily wiped it away, disgusted to even think about the man who she had once loved. She ran as far as her petite body could take her, it didn't matter where, all she needed was to get away. She started to breathe heavily, quickly running out of breath but she didn't stop, not even to rest after all, if she did, he would find her.
Life wasn't always this bad. She was just Jhanvi Sharma: the girl who fell in love with the meaning of love itself. All she wanted was her Prince Charming: someone who would love and cherish her. Little did she know that her wish was going to become horridly true.
She met him nearly six months back. Viraj Dobriyal. He was always the type of man who was charming, well dressed and well spoken. He had wooed her from the first day they met. It was purely by accident, she had dropped her bag in the shopping mall and had nearly hyperventilated knowing that everything was in there. It wasn't until a few minutes later, he had came up to her with her bag. She was probably the most happiest girl at the time, and soon after she had begun to know him. She didn't know what it was about him, whether it was his personality or his captivating charm but it appealed to her. Soon enough he proposed to her and she accepted, of course with her parent's permission.
Everything changed that night. He had taken her home, their home, and the first thing she noticed was how large it was. It was extravagant. But the most unusual part? No one had invited her in, she became to feel uneasy at how she didn't know her husband's family, she didn't even know if he had any relatives. Perhaps, it was his alluring self that made her forget about her troubles. But of course, she should have known something was wrong. She just should have. The way he frightened her with the cockroaches, her worst fear, and then the way he, without care dipped the creature into his milk and drank it. She should have known something was wrong.
But all she knew was that her life was now with her husband. Whatever he said, she should do. After all, that was what she was brought up to do. She didn't know how things had changed. It seemed everything that she did was just wrong. She would get shouted at if things were not placed in their original places. If she didn't wake up at a certain time, she would find herself at the cruel arms of her husband. She couldn't tell this to her family, she was too scared, both for her safety and her family.
He had gotten better the day he found out she was pregnant. He couldn't believe that he was going to be a father and made extra care not to hurt her, to do anything that would make her smile. She should he had changed.
All was wrong.
He didn't.
It was all an accident. He had shouted at her for something meaningless, that made her startle and ended up slipping and falling down the stairs. She loved their unborn child more than any mother could, but her world had shattered the moment he told her that it was her fault. She spent the next few nights in absolute fear but also in anger. How could he do this to her? How could he say that it was her fault for plotting to kill their child? He said she did it on purpose. Those few words had almost killed her. And she couldn't bear any longer, she had to get away.
As soon as he arrived home, she had drugged him with sleeping tablets that she had gotten from her last visit to the hospital. He was drowsy and out of place, but didn't realise when she had ran away from the house. He followed her but couldn't keep up. She had stolen his car, but of course she couldn't drive, he ran behind her, taking the help of a Taxi. She couldn't steer it properly and didn't realise when she had collided with another car, before her own car had rocketed into the water.
She managed to get away thanks to her quick thinking. She had hidden in the waters as the car pummelled down and crashed. There was a big bang, fire came blazing through but was tamed by the water. She had carefully swam all the way ashore, making sure that no one knew about her. The day transitioned into the night as she ran, tearing her mangalsutra and wiping her sindoor off. She didn't need him.
She was safe.
She just couldn't go back to him. Not any more.
