Khushi looked around, terrified. She grabbed her white lehenga and lifted it as she tried to run, but she couldn't escape. She was trapped .. in darkness. She couldn't see anything. Tears rolled down her cheeks; she closed her eyes. She trembled as she said a silent prayer to her favorite deity. Her eyes flew open.
Hope flickered in her eyes as it reflected a bright light. A man walked towards her; Khushi narrowed her eyes, but she still couldn't see his face. He was holding something in his hands. As he moved closer, her eyes opened wide. She looked around, searching for a way to escape' but then a voice inside her head asked her to stay in place. He stopped in front of her and Khushi's mouth fell open, seeing what was on his plate.
"Jalebi", Her face lit up with glee. She picked up a jalebi and dropped it in her mouth. She closed her eyes, as she moaned, savoring the sugary slice of heaven. Her eyes flew open, as she felt strong arms scooping her up in the air.
"Put me down.." she screamed, as she put her hands on the man's shoulders, trying to push herself out of his arms, but he was too strong for her. His face was still not visible. He carried her towards the light.
Khushi gave up fighting as she stared in awe at the night sky; it looked like the number of stars in the sky were growing as they walked towards the light. She looked at the man and she burst into a smile. She put her hands around his neck and smiled. Rose petals fell from the sky and her face lit up with happiness. Flowers of different colors bloomed on either side of the path that he took her down. Finally he placed her down. A faint smile appeared on Khushi's face. In front of her was a canal with floating lanterns and a gondola. Paradise .. this must be what it looks like, she thought, tears in her eyes!
The man stepped inside the gondola and shot his hand towards her. She smiled as she took the hand. He snaked his arm around her waist as he lifted her and placed her inside the gondola. He placed his hands on her arms and helped her sit down, never leaving her eyes. She watched curiously as he bent to his side, searching for something. She raised her eyebrows as she watched him pick up a bottle of champagne and two champagne flutes. She giggled, excited, as he popped the bottle open and poured the bubbling liquid into the flutes. He smiled as he extended a flute towards her. Just as she took it from him, a loud ringing noise annoyed her.
Khushi's eyes flew open. She blinked her eyes as she tried to figure out where she was. She was sitting in the dining room of the Raizada mansion. She had dozed off with her head on the table. She grabbed her mobile phone, which was the source of the loud ringing sound.
"Yes, Di. .. No, I am still at home.. Arnav has still not reached.. No, no, Di. We will come to the farmhouse as soon as he gets home.. You all have fun.. Please.." She smiled as she cut the call. She exhaled deeply and leaned back against the chair.
The Raizada family had been planning their New Year Eve party for the past one week. They had decided to have a small gathering of close relatives, the Gupta family and Manorama's siblings and their families ' at the farmhouse. Arnav had called earlier that evening to let Khushi know that he was running late; he had mumbled something about a year-end review, over the phone. He had wanted her to go to the farmhouse with the rest of the family and enjoy herself, but she had been adamant that she won't go there without him. How would she enjoy when her mind would be occupied with thoughts about him?
Khushi sighed again and looked at the clock on the wall. It was a little after 11pm. She stood up from the table and yawned, stretching her arms. Khushi looked strikingly beautiful, draped in a transparent black saree that showed off her sharp curves. She staggered towards the stairs, up the stairs and down the corridor, still groggy. When she reached her bedroom, she groped in the dark looking for the bed, feeling too lazy to switch on the light. When her fingers found the bed, she crawled onto it and curled up on her side of the bed, not even bothering to pull the sheets over her. When faint snores echoed in the bedroom, a shadow emerged from behind the curtains.
Khushi's eyes fluttered open. She was drenched in sweat. She sat up on the bed. The air conditioner had stopped working. She groped for the switch of the lamp on the bedside table, and pressed it; nothing. Must be a power outage.
She froze; someone else was in the room with her. "Who is there?" She yelled, shooting her hand out to her side, trying to grab anything that could serve as a weapon if at all she had to defend herself.
Her eyes opened wide and then she relaxed; a faint smile appeared on her face.
"Arnav.." Somewhere in the room, a heart started pounding wildly, hearing the love and eagerness in the voice that spoke the name.
Khushi felt something sticky on her lips. She licked it; it was sugary sweet. Her eyes opened wide; jalebi. She closed her eyes and took a bite. Just then, the room was flooded with a bright light; her eyes flew open and she saw star-shaped fairy lights above her. Her face glowed, not because of the light, but with happiness when she saw her husband in front of her.
"Happy new year, sweetheart", Arnav whispered.
Fireworks were heard in the background. She smiled and leaned in closer to him. Their lips met and Arnav sighed, happy to be home with his wife.
Arnav pulled away, closed his eyes and pressed his forehead against hers. "I missed you", he whispered. "All day, all I thought about was you." He could feel a smile appear on her face. And then it disappeared.
She pulled away and he looked at her, worried. Her eyes refused to meet his; they were staring at her hands, which were on her lap. Arnav touched her chin and lifted her face. Her eyes met his briefly, and she threw her arms around him and hugged him tight.
"I missed you too. I thought I won't see you at midnight. I know you don't believe in all that.. but I really wanted it to be you who I saw at midnight.." She pulled away and even in the dim light, he could see her cheeks turn a light crimson. "You who I kissed at midnight.."
"Did you think I would welcome the new year with anyone else?" Arnav paused, and chuckled as he added, "Hmm.. I guess I could have stayed with Aman."
Khushi punched his arm and looked away, annoyed. Arnav had a wide grin on his face, as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her close; she crashed onto his chest. She snaked her arms around his waist and pressed her head against his chest, listening to the beating of his heart.
"Last year, destiny brought me to you at midnight, but this year I wanted to make sure you would definitely see my face at midnight. I want you to spend the rest of your life with me and only me."
Khushi burst into a smile and sighed. She paused before she asked, "Since when did you believe in such silly.."
Arnav touched her chin and Khushi looked up; her eyes met his and her lips trembled, seeing his affectionate, deep brown eyes. "Since I met you. Since you taught me to love. Since you filled the void in my life." He pressed his lips against her forehead. Khushi closed her eyes; a tear rolled down her cheek, when she heard him say, "I love you, Khushi."
Khushi's eyes opened wide as she felt herself being scooped up into strong arms. She smiled, as she snaked her arms around his neck and pressed her head against him, enjoying the warmth of his chest. Arnav walked to the French doors, carrying her in his arms. Rose petals showered down on them as they stepped on to the poolside. Arnav stopped and looked at Khushi. He bent down and pressed his lips gently on hers. Her fingers crawled up his head and grabbed a handful of his hair, as she opened her mouth and sucked on his lower lip. She sighed, as he pulled away. He smiled and gently placed her on her feet.
Khushi saw flickering light reflected on the French doors. She turned around, a curious expression on her face. Her mouth flew open and she burst into a smile. The swimming pool was covered with floating lanterns. On one side of the pool was a float tube, big enough to seat two, decorated with white and pink gerbera daisies. The paradise from my dreams... her eyes filled with tears!
Arnav stepped on the tube and shot his hand out for Khushi. She blushed as she slowly slid her hand in his. He snaked his arm around her waist and lifted her and placed her gently onto the tube. They gazed into each others' eyes smiling. Suddenly Khushi's smile disappeared; she looked around, curiously.
"What happened, love?" Arnav asked, concerned.
She looked at him and asked, confused. "Where is the champagne?"
Arnav raised his eyebrows. A naughty smirk appeared on his face as he asked, "How did you know I got champagne?" He removed a few flowers from his side to reveal a bucket filled with ice, and a champagne bottle tucked into the ice.
Khushi shrugged her shoulders and added with a wide grin. "Just a guess."
Khushi sighed as she leaned against Arnav's chest. Her back was against his chest and his arms around her waist. He pressed his lips to her hair; she sighed. He inhaled the fruity smell of her shampoo and smiled. The lanterns flickered in the water, around their flowery loveseat.
Paradise, Khushi thought. She sighed again and muttered under her breath. "It's with you. My paradise is right here, in your arms."
"Did you say something?" Arnav leaned closer, his lips brushing against her ear, his warm breath tickling her. She smiled and placed a quick kiss on his cheek and then cuddled closer, pressing her back against his chest, watching the stars in the sky above. Arnav pressed his cheek against her cheek and sighed.
"Arnav?"
"Hmm..?"
"I love you."
Khushi turned around and put her hands around Arnav's neck. She tilted her head and pressed her lips against his, softly. He sucked on her lower lip and threw his arms around her and pulled her closer. She melted in his arms; the kiss was full of emotion. He wanted her to know how much he missed her, how much he wanted her, how much he needed her. She grabbed his hair and responded with equal fervor; she wanted him to know how much he meant to her, that she couldn't live without him.
Arnav sighed deeply as he pulled away. He pressed his lips gently on her forehead and scooped her up in his arms. He turned around and put her down on the side of the pool. She jumped up on her toes and shot her hand in his direction. He smiled and moved his hand towards her to place it in hers, but she pulled it away and giggled. She got up on her feet, stuck her tongue out at him and ran into the room. Arnav shook his head, smiling, hoisted himself on the side of the pool, jumped up to his feet and ran into the room.
Arnav closed the French doors and turned around to face his wife, a naughty twinkle in his eyes.
"Don't play with me today, Khushi." He growled.
She raised her eyebrows and asked, nonchalantly. "Why?"
He smirked. "Because I so badly want to hold you and show you how much I love you. And if you are naughty, I will want you more." Desire blazed in his eyes. Khushi felt a shiver all over her body. She giggled as she jumped up on the bed. She ran across the bed towards the door. Arnav took a step towards the bed, snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her towards him. Her hair fell across his face as she leaned towards him, her arms around his neck and her feet still on the bed. Arnav grabbed her waist, picked her up and put her across his shoulder.
