Vishal Bhardwaj, the most underrated MD?

Right, so I was watching a bit of SRGMP with VB there yesterday and ...honestly I was reminded again that VB has some pretty darn BEAUTIFULLY amazing songs. IMHO, he's right up there with Rahman and Amit Trivedi..His songs usually have some beautiful lyrics and always fit in well with the movie. Rigth from "Chod Aaye Hum Woh Gaaliyan" and "Chappa Chappa" to the songs from Matru...they're all pretty darn amazing and deep...yet on some level, as a music director he's not as recognized as the others. I mean, when I hear talks of music directors, 99.99% people mention ARR, Amit Trivedi, Pritam, V-S...VB isn't usually mentioned.

Is it because his work as a film director overshadows his music or another reason?

I agree Himani...he has a earthy touch in all his songs...with some meaningful lyrics

Maachis has the best songs...even Satya had great songs
I absolutely love his song dil toh bachha hai ji from ishqiya 😃

I would live it if he gives more music in other movies as well

Personally speaking Rahman has lost his touch...but Vishal is still going strong

I feel he is underrated cz he gives very less music and only to the ones he produces/directs

Plus many people still don't know that he has given music for so many songs

VB is my favourite music director cos he's always been consistantly great. There's always one song from the album that manages to take the nation by storm- Chhapa chhapa, Beedi, Dhan te nan, Dil toh baccha hai ji and Darling. I prefer the ones that go unnoticed (relatively) like O saathi re, Pehli baar mohabbat ki hai, Bekaraan, Tere liye, Badi Dheere Jali, Ab mujhe koi and many more.
I've exhausted ALL the songs from SKM and Ishqiya on my playlist ever since they came out.
I don't think his movies reach out as much to the audience, Kaminey a semi hit and SKM flopped- probably why it didn't garner the praise it should have.
Love how he infuses jazz and rock with Indian in Ab mujhe koi and O Mama respectively- no one does that as well as him, Amit Trivedi a close second.

I feel like all of his albums have at least one song that's just breathtaking...and the lyrics are just sooo deep! VB-Gulzar combo is one of the best lyricist-MD combinations out there for sure.

Machis, Satya were beautiful...I mean who doesn't love this song?

Omkara, Kaminey, 7 Khoon Maaf, Ishqiya, Hu Tu Tu, and sooo many more! He has such fantastic songs...but yeah, I guess one of the reasons is that a lot of people simply don't know ki they're his songs and he only composes for a select few films. Yes Aditi he has received awards and stuff, but he's the least popular music director (and it's definitely not due to a lack of talent)..so I guess the word here is under-hyped rather than underrated...maybe because his music isn't usually the foot-tapping chart-busters famous today either...his music is rusty, earthy, and the lyrics usually deep...like I remember "Fatak" from Kaminey was about AIDS, but it's not obvious just from the audio right away.

And hahah, I know SRGMP's last good season was back in 2007 or so, but whatever I heard wasn't that bad this time...way way way way better than the awful show they put up for the JTHJ special..

yes he is underrated as MD and the most overrated in today's time is SEL and ARR

On topic, I actually do like Vishal Bhardwaj's music. I don't think he's totally underrated per se; he has won awards and has received recognition. But I am surprised that he's not that popular compared to other music directors. Maybe it's because he doesn't direct music often.

SEL aren't as popular as they were years back though. They're kinda going through a rough phase.

Good post! Truly Vb is amazing as a director and music director. Who can forget the music of Omkara, especially Naina thug lenge song... Brilliant composition by him. I don't understand why his music or songs dont get much needed recognition in any award nominations. It's sad that a talent like him is going unnoticed.
