The rise and fall of Kareena Kapoor

Looking back at the rivalry between Sridevi and Madhuri in the early 90s, I feel in some ways it is being repeated now, but with 2 new leading ladies.

Their names are Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

Don't laugh just yet 😳 - let's take a look at the comparisons.

- Sridevi is 4 years older than Madhuri

- Kareena is 4 years older than Katrina

- Sridevi + Madhuri's first Hindi movies were flops

- Kareena + Katrina's first Hindi movies were also flops

- Sridevi has been acting since the age of 4, Madhuri started much later

- Kareena started acting since before she was born.. whereas Katrina started much later.

- Sridevi was the undisputed No.1 heroine, until slowly but surely Madhuri rose to take the crown

- Similarly, Kareena has been the undisputed No.1 heroine of the last few days, but Katrina is hotly tipped to take the top spot by 2013.

- Sridevi and Madhuri never worked together, but had been seen at events during their peaks.

- Same with Kareena and Katrina - they keep their distances but have been photographed together a few times

- Sridevi was popular, but after the 80s ended, she never seemed to have any real hit songs picturised on her - whereas Madhuri had several huge chartbusters which felped propel her into the coveted top slot (Dhak Dhak, Choli Ke Peeche, Channe Ke Khet, Mera Piya Ghar Aaya)

- Kareena is also undeniably popular today, but it's Katrina's tumka's that are causing a frenzy these days, whether it is Sheila Ki Jawani, Chikni Chameli or Ishq Shava - and on the flip side, Bebo's hyped songs are not quite cutting the mustard (Dil Mera Muft Ka, Halkat Jawani, Fevicol)

- In the early 90s, three young heroes with the same surname began leading the scene. They were all born in 1965. Aamir, Salman and Shahrukh. This favoured Madhuri, as she was born in 1967. So she was comfortably younger than them, and could still work with older heroes: Rishi, Sanjay, Anil, Sunny etc.

Unfortunately, Sridevi was born in 1963. Making her 2 years older than the Khans. And we all know how ageist the entertainment industry can be, expecially to a woman. Sri was not paired opposite Aamir, as she looked too mature, and he was so baby faced. She had 2 movies with Salman in 93+94 but they flopped, and again she looked a lot more mature than him. SRK starred opposite her in one film (Army, 1996) for which he sported a moustache for the first time on screen.

- In today's generation, although there are no 2 young Khans to fight over, Bebo still faces a big problem. The thing is, the Khans are still ruling the roost 20+ years later. But in order for them to retain their appeal, they seem to think they must star only with girls who are in their 20s. Kareena will be pushing 24 next year. Problem number 2: Ranbir Kapoor!! Unfortunately, the biggest male star of the current generation is Kareena's cousin. Therefore they have not been paired opposite each other. And she has lost out on some films already because of this. Problem No.3, 4, 5: She can't work with Hrithik Roshan because they fell out many years ago and have not worked together in 10 years. She cannot work with her "first hero" Abhishek Bachchan because they are not on great terms since the broken engagement of her sister Karisma with him, almost 10 years ago too. She cannot work with her ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor also. There have been some of the top stars of the last decade or so - and she has lost out on working with them. Problem number 6: Saif Ali Khan, not only are they now married which is a taboo in Btown, but it seems their work together is not appreciated. If they star together again it will spell disaster.

Whereas look at Katrina, she's working with all the top heroes without a single problem. And she looks good with all the younger stars too.

Anybody else feel the slight comparisons between the 2 rivalries?

I know it's mild, and stretching at times, but I find it interesting. 😛

Obviously Katrina is not in Madhuri's league talentwise, or beautywise, or any other wise. But I mean in terms of an arch nemesis for Kareena, she packs a good punch for her fellow rival. And she comes across as threatened by Kats. Same way Sri did about Mads back then.

Katrina is good dancer because she is dedicated in learning her steps well but she is terrible with her expressions! Dancing is not all about moving your body expressions play a vital role.

Bebo's fevicol didn't have great steps but her expressions entertained us more while Chikini Chameli had powerful steps but her expressions were a let down!

Even though Madhuri is known as the dancing diva due her phenomenal dance performances, she is very good with emoting emotions. She by all means is an actress!

Katrina has a very long way to go...she is only known for her dance numbers in her 8-9 year career it's only Rajneeti where i like performance but then this movie had a well written script which made the audience empathize with Kat's character!

I feel PC Bebo are rivalries!
