Ranbir Kapoor's Barfi! out of the Oscar race

Director Anurag Basu's Barfi! which brought the yesteryear film appeal to modern day cinema has failed to make the cut for the Oscars. The film which was initially in the running to qualify for the best foreign language film category at the 85th Academy Awards has since dropped out of the race.

Barfi! which featured Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and mute boy and Priyanka Chopra as an autistic girl earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, enjoyed a massive box office collection. However, of the 71 films that qualified for the Oscars from across the world, nine have been shortlisted, which will further compete to make it to the final five nominations. Sadly, Barfi! didn't make it to list.

The nine selected films are Amour (Austria), War Witch, (Canada), No (Chile), A Royal Affair (Denmark), The Intouchables (France), The Deep (Iceland), Kon-Tiki (Norway), Beyond the Hills (Romania) and Sister (Switzerland). The final list of five films will be announced on Jan 10.

Anurag not upset over Oscar ouster for 'Barfi!'

Even with his latest movie "Barfi!" out of the Oscar race, Anurag Basu is not disappointed. He feels better films have made it to the top nine.

"It's okay. I am not disappointed. All the other films are so good, so I have no complains," Basu said Tuesday on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai .

Barfi! was India's official entry for the best foreign language film category at the 85th Academy Awards this year.

The film, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and mute boy and Priyanka Chopra as an autistic girl, is no longer in the run for the award.

Of the 71 films that qualified for the Oscars from across the world, nine have been shortlisted. These will further compete to make it to the final five.

Priyanka Chopra: Sad about 'Barfi!' losing out in the Oscar race

New Delhi: Priyanka Chopra is sad that her film 'Barfi!' is out of the Oscar race but the actress says she is glad that the film was sent as the official entry from India.

The Anurag Basu-directed film, starring Ranbir Kapoor as a deaf and mute boy and Priyanka as an autistic girl, was initially in the running to qualify for the best foreign language film category at the 85th Academy Awards but failed to make it to the shortlisted nine films.

"I am very sad about it. We as a team are sad about it. But I am glad the film was considered and sent as India's official entry to the Oscars. It was a very special film for us. We made it from the heart and I am really happy for the kind of response I've got for Jhilmil's character," Priyanka told PTI.

The actress says she is glad that the film was sent as the official entry from India.

Her role as an autistic girl earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and the film also enjoyed a good box office collection. "I was very nervous about playing a differently-abled person. It could have been a caricature or it could have looked fake. I am grateful people have seen it for what we were trying it to be," she said.

The film recently had its premiere at the Marrakech film festival, where a number of fans had gathered to catch a glimpse of the film's stars. "It was an amazing premiere at Marrakech, there were thousands of people standing in the

cold. It was really great."

The actress has a number of projects at hand now, including the Mary Kom biopic being made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

"I'll start work on the Mary Kom project in mid-next year and I have to begin training for that. I have met her and she is very involved with the project because the film is inspired by her life. She is a great girl, so much fun and has been very helpful so far," said Priyanka.

Bloody Oscar ppl won't select a Lagaan or Barfi, but they will shitty film like Slumdog just coz it shows india in poor condition 😡

same they did with big b's black... f u k of f oscars 🤢

Many said Barfi was inspired so m not surprised wid its ouster...😊...
On Slumdog M part i agree...but dat is d case wid every award function...dey are hardle neutral...😭
