She never understood why people preferred taking flights over trains. Long flights in those stuffy seats never gave her much comfort anyways. Trains, on the other hand, was much more relaxing and enjoyable to her. Time passed really quickly for her, seated in the corner seat of the long distance train from Mumbai to Kolkata, with a book in her hand and the eye-catching vast spread of lavish green fields that lay on the other side of the glass window.
Vendors came and went with a large array of food and drinks, from chips to kulfis and ice creams, but all she had was a cup of tea. As the sun finally settled in, and the dark sky, dotted with millions of tiny and yellow stars appeared, with the beautiful moon in the midst of it. She lay in her seat, enjoying the movement of the train, staring at the moon that beamed brightly at her. She wanted to enjoy the moment, but she couldn't. She was upset. How much ever she tried to get a hold of herself, she felt lonely and miserable.
Her life was a big mess right now. Well, life is perfect for no one, but all she wanted was a single moment of pure happiness and contentment, where she could smile without anything to worry about. It has been so long that she felt that true unadulterated happiness, that she does not even remember it. Whenever she tried to be happy or at least she thought that she did, life found its way to spoil it. Life is perfect for no one, but she deserves to be enjoying this beautiful night without shedding tears.
Suddenly, she couldn't take it anymore. With so many thoughts running in her head, she suddenly felt suffocated. She jumped from her lower birth seat and put on her bunny slippers, tightening the shawl around her. It was almost 2 am, and not a single soul was awake. It was peaceful. She decided to go and wash her tear stained face and let go of the bad thoughts for the night. Her problems will be waiting when the train arrives its destination, and she could take care of it then. Right now she just wanted to enjoy the night, when the moon shone brighter than the sun.
She walked out of the cabin, proceeding towards the washroom, when she heard a voice behind her.
"Cute slippers"
She turned around, astonished, to find a handsome-looking man standing near the compartment door, wearing a cute-dimpled grin on his face.
Not expecting anyone to be awake at this hour of the night, she was too shocked for a moment to speak. So all she could do is gawk at him open-mouthed.
"Do you know how to speak, or you can just rudely at handsome strangers?" He teased, knowing that she was not at all please.
She crossed her arms, narrowing her eyes at him, replying, "Oh, you are a charming one, aren't you?"
At this his grin only grew wider. Oh, she is good. This was not what he expected.
"Why, yes I am. And it is not good to flirt with strangers."
At this her jaw literally dropped.
"Wow, cocky much?"
She stared at him, slightly annoyed. She was not usually this rude to strangers. She is not an answering back kind of person either. She was just plain embarrassed. She had been miserable and crying. Her tear-stained face must look, and all she wanted to do is wash her face and calm herself down before she breaks down again but she was caught red handed. She did not like it when people saw her in her miserable moments, she did not need their sympathies or their understanding. None of them were ever going to understand what she was going through, although most of them claim they do.
When the stranger did not reply for a moment, she decided to go back to her coach and get some sleep. Just when she was about to turn around and walk away she heard a faint voice behind her.
"Beautiful night, isn't it?"
She turned around to find him leaning against the door, staring at the beautiful night. So she took the spot across him, leaning against the wall staring at the same beautiful night sky.
"It looks peaceful." She finally said, after a moment of enjoying the cool breeze that brushed her cheeks.
"Makes you want to forget all your worries." She looked at him, amazed, to stare into his beautiful blue eyes. This is exactly what she wanted! It was as if he was a mind reader, spilling out her thoughts loud.
"Yes" She admitted. The stranger was extremely attractive, she noticed. He had black hair, blue eyes and a body worth dying for. He wore a transparent white shirt, revealing his abs slightly with a pair of jeans and chappals.
She didn't know for long she had been staring into his eyes so shamelessly, but his eyes were extremely captivating not only because they are gorgeous, but because they looked unhappy to her.
"The sun will shine again, and the peaceful night will be gone tomorrow." She sensed the sadness in his voice, as he spoke softly to her, staring into the night.
"But it will give so many such nights to look forward to." She said softly, and he looked at her, his eyes fixed on hers, with an unreadable expression on his face.
Feeling uncomfortable under his gaze she decided to break the silence.
"Um, I think I should go back." She said.
"It was nice meeting you." He smiled at her softly. She returned the smile, a genuine smile. Moments ago, she felt lonely and sad. It felt so unreal that she had found someone who shared her sadness that she did not feel so lonely anymore.
Just as she was about to go back to her coach, she stopped and turned around, to find him in the same position, staring at the night sky.
" I call them fluffy" He looked up at her, questioningly.
"My slippers. I call them fluffy." She turned red in embarrassment, wondering why she had let that bit of information out. She never shared this with anyone.
At this he just stared at her for a moment, letting out a loud laugh after a moment.
"Fluffy? Really?" He managed, before laughing again.
"They are really soft okay?"
At that he laughed louder.
"Shut up." She said, smiling at little.
"It's okay. I have a Pokemon watch that I love." He grinned at her.
Gone were all the worries and problems. None of them realized that they ended up talking the entire night, laughing and teasing each other, until the sun rose again. But she was not sad that the beautiful night was over. She knew that his company had made it even more beautiful. Both of them stayed up all night, talking and laughing, but they did not even names or contact number. She just told him that she was glad that she met him, waved last goodbye and got down at her destination. He just smiled at her and told her that he will be looking forward to such a night, after which she walked away.
She was happy and content and it felt surreal. Her life was still a mess and her problems were still awaiting, but she did not care anymore since she had a beautiful memory that she could cherish. For that she was grateful to the stranger and she hoped that he got everything he was looking for in life, since she would never cross paths with him ever again.
What she did not know was that she was going to meet him again. It was not going to be easy, but in all aspects this night was going to change her life forever. For one last time, she stopped and turned around to still find him standing there smiling at her, smiled at him one last time and walked away, not knowing that they were meant to be.
