Why J P Dutta had Lata Mangeshkar release 'Umrao Jaan' music?SUBHASH K JHA

Lata Mangeshkar's presence at the music release of the new-age Umrao Jaan last Saturday was no coincidence. A well-informed source informs us, "Asking Lata Mangeshkar to release the music of the film was an ingenuous way to break the aura of Asha Bhonsle that surrounds the earlier Umrao Jaan. J P Dutta is absolutely fed up of the comparisons with the Muzzafar Ali's film. People are constantly comparing the two. He wanted the comparisons to stop. And what better place to begin with, than the music? J P saw Lata as their saving grace, whose presence at the music function could deflect attention from the National award-winning mujras that Ashaji sang for Rekha in the earlier film."
Javed Akhtar, who nowadays gets along famously with Lataji, was given the task of inviting her to the function. Apparently she never says refuses him. Nor is she inclined to back out of her commitment to someone whom he shares so much laughter and camaraderie with. Sure enough Lataji did turn up. "J P hopes the desired effect has been achieved, and music lovers will now look at this Umrao Jaan in a different light," says our source. "He hopes that now Anu Malik-Alka Yagnik's combined efforts in J P's Umrao Jaan acquired a profile very different from the Khayyam-Asha Bhosle combination in Muzzafar Ali's Umrao Jaan.Incidentally Khayyam has gone on record to state that he chose Asha and not the more in-demand sister for Muzzafar Ali's Umrao Jaan because Lataji had sung the mujras to perfection in Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah.
