Why Bollywood is Crazy about Holiday Release?

As in recent times there is a mad rush for releasing film in Holidays at the Box Office India. After superb Opening received in films in Holiday, it is a well thought strategy among the makers now. Such releases come into significance around in 2008-2009 time period, when screens started to increase all India like a fire. Before that also there is Holiday releases, but without any mad rush.

My point is that does a Bollywood Film really benefits from Holiday release or not? Yes, it do benefit if it gets sufficient screen space and sufficient run time. In today's time sufficient screen space will be around 2500 screens and 2 weeks for any big budgeted film. If anything below than this then it have to depend of word of mouth. A movie opens well in Holiday release on the star power and the film buzz more than anything else. And after the initial 3-4 days, the word of mouth decides the film fate, be there are Holidays or not. If every film had performed well on Holidays then every Sunday would have been Housefull. This is a wrong notion many makers don't know. Secondly since, everyone is fighting for Holiday release and hence, there is fierce competition among many releases. Because of this one seldom gets free run at the box office or sufficient screen space.

We have noticed that if a maker is confident on its project. If the content is great. Then might came a stage very soon when makers will release films in Non-Holiday release. This will help them to get sufficient screens and free run of easily 2-3 weeks at the box office. History has given us film like Barfi!, OMG at the box office, which collected well despite Non-Holiday release and limited screen space. Even Rowdy Rathore is a Non-Holiday Release which is the 2nd biggest grosser of the year, but had great word of mouth.

What is the use of Holidays if you don't get enough screen space and free run at the box office. Also even if it gets free run still only content will carry it in theaters after initial 3-4 days. That means only benefit of few crores nothing else. Use Non-Holiday release and get what you deserve. And it will be added bonuses for Non-Holiday releases, if you get a National Holiday (Non-Festive like 2nd October, Good Friday etc) in between. This will help to accumulate huge collections in a single day. This might be the thumb rule in coming days, which might nullify the craze of releasing big films around the Holidays (Specially Festive like Eid, Diwali) only.
