There was a time when Akshay Kumar was close to being the number one star in Bollywood (during 2007-2008). During that period, his name was taken in the same breath as superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. However, things started falling apart for Akshay, as he delivered a series of under-performers at the box office, such as CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, 8X10 TASVEER, KAMBAKHT ISHQ, BLUE, DE DANA DAN, KHATTA MEETHA, ACTION REPLAYY, TEES MAAR KHAN, PATIALA HOUSE, THANK YOU...and the list goes on!
Come 2012, and Akshay has seen a career transformation, and how! It started this year with the Super Hit HOUSEFULL 2, which gave him his ticket to the 100 crore club. After that was the Blockbuster ROWDY RATHORE, which may still be the most appreciated film of the year on an All-India level as we speak. After that was the Super Hit OH MY GOD, which he produced and had a supporting role in, and we all know the tremendous appreciation that the film received. Sure, Akshay had JOKER as well this year, but he never even promoted the film pre-release, and it was the director Shirish Kunder who had to face all the criticism.
Basically, Akshay has been one of the top stars this year, perhaps right under Salman Khan! Akshay has been on fire!
Now, comes his next release, KHILADI 786. To be honest, when I saw the poster for the film a year ago and heard about the film a year ago, I was not having a good feeling at all about the film. It seemed like a random film was suddenly being made, and there was the news of Himesh Reshamiya being associated and starring in the film, and we all know that he has had a flop acting/movie career. To make things worse, the poster reminded me of TEES MAAR KHAN.
However, after seeing the first teaser of KHILADI 786, everything changed! There are certain vibes you get about a film in terms of it being similar to another film. When I saw the promos and other things of COCKTAIL, it felt like the film had a similar feel to LOVE AAJ KAL, and just like LOVE AAJ KAL, COCKTAIL also became a success. Then, when I saw the promo of JOKER, I felt it had a similar vibe to TEES MAAR KHAN, and much like TEES MAAR KHAN, JOKER was also bashed and under-performed at the box office. Now for KHILADI 786, when I saw the first action-pakced teaser, I felt that the film has a similar feel to the Blockbuster ROWDY RATHORE, which is what made me start to believe that KHILADI 786 will be a success at the box office!
KHILADI 786 seems to have the masala formula and mass elements that satisfy the public in India, especially the masses. It seems to have a lot of action, comedy, etc. On top of that, the songs of the film have become extremely popular. Almost every song seems to have clicked with the public!
Now, about the box office of the film. There is no doubt that KHILADI 786 will take a huge opening, similar to ROWDY RATHORE. The opening will be very good at the mass-dominated areas, at the single screens, and in the North, as the film seems to have a heavy North Indian flavor to it. KHILADI 786 has the potential to work universally, so even the multiplex-dominated areas could take a strong opening. The opening weekend will be excellent. Also, I feel that KHILADI 786 has the potential to be loved by the masses, so I'm sure, that even after the opening weekend the film will sustain. But, it must be remembered that DABANNG 2 is releasing in 2 weeks, so KHILADI 786 will collect all that it can before DABANNG 2 releases.

Opening Day: 15 crores net
Opening Weekend: 48 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 115 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Super Hit
Yes, I feel that with this film, Akshay will yet again enter the 100 crore club!
As for Asin, she looks gorgeous in the film! Many may feel that Asin is just a show-piece in her films and that she shouldn't get credit for her films that are in the 100 crore club, but the truth is, Asin knows well what works with the audience, especially with the masses, and that's why she been a part of all these films.
To sum it up, I will say this. In December, there are two huge films, KHILADI 786 and DABANNG 2. These two films will make the masses lose their voices due to all the whistling, clapping and cheering that the masses will be doing for the films. It is going to be the month for the masses!
