Part 3.

Okay... something to note... My RK has not had his heart to heart with Madhu...so his Biwi is still seeking the answer to her question...

"Aren't you going to touch my feet and take my blessing?"

Seeing her glare, he laughed, "May be not... still I shall bless you," he lifted his hand above her head, " Saubhagyavati Bhava!"

"That was so filmy, haina Biwi? Now let me see what else.. paani pila diya...khana bhi Khila diya... aashirvaad bhi de diya... what else? Haan gifts."

"But RK I don't..."

"Now now Biwi don't say that 'your being here is the gift I wanted'" he said with perfect intonation and smirked seeing her outrage. "Caught you, didn't I?"

"No!" she lifted her face in defiance." I want my gift."

"Good girl." He touched her cheek in a quick pat and saw her eyes fire up, "You are RK's wife...never sell yourself short. Tell me what you want and it is yours." He leaned down so that his face was on level with hers, "but the offer stands just for tonight... haan Biwi... anything you ask is yours to take."

"I want an answer," she said. "Why did you close the case against Maalik?"

"Biwi how many times should I ..."

She placed her hand over his heart, her finger's lingering caressingly over his wound, "He shot at you .. tried to kill you again, still you withdrew the case. Why?"

He remained silent.

"You told me anything I ask... this is what I want." Still he refused to answer. Her eyes pleaded for an answer... the need to understand, "please RK!"

Seeing that he was adamant about not giving in she started to withdraw her hand, but he captured it against him with his hand covering hers.

"Would you believe me if I said I did it for you?"

Two pairs of eyes searched in the depths of the others, searching for truth...she was overwhelmed by the intensity in his.

"RK .." his name on her lips was the barest of whisper.

His face transformed with a mocking smile, Na Biwi, if you have understood me even a bit after all these months, you will know RK is never that generous." He took her hand away from his chest, held on to it for a moment and let it drop after a lingering caress with his thumb. Turning slightly away from her he continued, "What was there for me in persecuting a man who was just out of hospital and still limping. He didn't seem like a person who would be discomfited with prison... what is more, he may gain skill and friends over there. The man who comes out of the prison will be more dangerous than the one who went in and he will not miss his mark the next time he attacks." He turned back to look at her. "This way he will be forever indebted to me. So you see Biwi, freeing your Maalik was more advantageous than having him in jail. This way he will be supressed with the weight of his guilt and gratitude."

She searched his face, puzzled by that elusive truth that had been there in his eyes. She still remembered that quick glance that he had cast her way while talking to Maalik at the police station...why did it feel that he was trying to hide something, that there was more to it than his explanations. Still she couldn't refute his argument... But now trying to read his eyes, she found them devoid of expression.. so calm that all she could see was her reflection in their depths.

She gave a nod of acceptance for his answer and struggled to keep her emotions in check.

"Thank you RK.. I am happy that there is something sinister as usual in your generous act." She said serenely and moved away to switch off the projector.

RK eyed her puzzled by her words... this was not what he had expected, her calm acceptance.

"Biwi?"

She turned back to look at him, "Uh?"

"Are you okay?"

"Haan," then turned back to the work at hand. "Why?"

"You are not angry?"

"No." she paused a moment, "Did you want me to be?"

RK was confused... What was happening? Why was she not angry.. why was she not accusing him of being cold hearted brute? Had she found the truth in his earlier statement... did she find out that she mattered to him?

He jerked her round to face him and saw the pain that shimmered in those eyes.. the silent tears that drenched her cheeks.

"Madhu.."

She wrapped her arms around him and held on tight. With her cheeks pressed to his chest, she could feel the altered heartbeat. Closing her eyes brought in the memory of him jerking as the doctors tried to revive him and with it his fall as he was hit by the bullet... from the gun aimed by her father...Still he had withdrawn the case... her breath got caught in a sob.

"Sh... don't cry.." he patted her back awkwardly , confused as to what brought this on.. he had expected her to be angry at him and had hoped that he could settle the matter of freeing Mallik once and for all. Her anger he could handle... but not her grief...

"I don't know what I would have done... what I should have done..." She said brokenly, "... but I didn't need to..." she raised her face to look at him, "Thank you...you shielded me..."

The tear stains adding to her vulnerability... and he didn't like her to be vulnerable...so fragile that anyone could hurt her..

He lifted his hand to wipe her tears.

At the sound of a throat being cleared they broke apart to see Bittuji at the door.

"Chief .. the last arrangement has arrived." He said mysteriously.

"Okay Bittuji... we will be there in a few minutes."

"Last arrangement?" Madhu asked puzzled, "Why is Bittuji talking in riddles?"

"Food Biwi..." then continued with a mocking smile. "As for BIttuji talking in riddles it is all your fault Biwi! Bittuji had to find a way around your promise, to tell me about the fast.. Since he succeeded he now considers himself Indiana Jones' assistant."

Madhu chuckled and RK relaxed happy that the painful memories had passed for now. He wondered how he was going to present her with the gift he was carrying with him.

"You didn't tell me how Bittuji managed to inform you despite his promise."

"Ha! He just called the Garjatyas and mentioned about me being newly married and that my Biwi, that is you wished to surprise me by keeping Karva Chauth fast... so could they just make sure I reached home on time..." He looked at her accusingly, "And Biwi after being chastised for being an irresponsible husband, I got a lecture on the meanings and the rituals involved."

"Thank you." Madhu said laughing.

"For what Biwi.. for listening to the lecture?"

"That too..." her smile was teasing, "but for letting me know how to be clear in my wordings while I draw a promise from Bittuji."

"Well, you don't have to worry about that Biwi .. because you are not allowed to keep secrets from me." His voice was edged with arrogance.

She could feel her blood tingling at his attitude.

"And just to make that sure I have something for you."

He pulled out the small box in his pocket and offered it to her on open palm.

He saw her eyes fall on the object, take it in and she drew in a quick breath. Her glance flew to his face as if seeking confirmation. He watched the emotions that flitted past ... the magical depth of her eyes mesmerising as she held his eyes captive with hers... he knew this moment will remain in his memory for ever...

With fingers that trembled she slowly reached her hand forward and caressed the Sindoor daani. Her eyes bright with unshed tears, she took the daani in her hand reverently, as if it was the most precious possession as if it was something so delicate that it might break or disappear. She opened it to find the sindoor inside. Like a person in trance, she touched her fingers to it and turned her hand to look at the smear of red on her fingertips in awe. She looked at him again, a lone tear slipping down her cheek... he felt his heart squeeze.

"Why do women cry for everything?" His own voice seemed overly husky." Biwi one doesn't cry when you are given a gift. You smile and say thank you."

"Thank you.." she smiled tremulously.

"You are welcome," he inclined his head in acceptance. "Well aren't you going to put it on? Let me see if it will make any difference to my Biwi."

Almost unconsciously she slightly extended her hand holding the Sindoor Daani towards RK. When he just looked at her without moving, She sighed inwardly and called herself a fool ... he had given her the sindoor, that in itself was a big thing... it was utter foolishness to expect him to put it on her. She lifted her other hand to touch the sindoor... but his fingers were already there on the daani smearing them with vermilion. Taking another step towards her, he transferred the colour on his fingertips to her for head.

As he was about to move back to see the impact of it on her face, she held him back with a grip on his jacket. Then lifting herself on tiptoe pressed her lips to his cheek, "Thank you again RK."

He was flabbergasted, clueless as to how to react to her sudden affection. Neither could he come up with any smart retorts...he could only stare at her.

She smiled softly, was this The Superstar RK? So confused by a delicate kiss? NO, this was more Rishab Kundra, her Husband.

"I'm feeling so hungry.. shall we go for dinner?"

Reaching the room, she noticed the various parcels arranged on her side of the bed and looked at him enquiring.

"Woh... SG ( Surya Garjatya) showed me the gifts packets he had stacked away for his wife... I didn't want you to have any less... aakhir you are RK's wife!"

Seeing her moving towards it, he told, "You can open them after food... I am hungry."

"You didn't have dinner? Why didn't you say so? I'll just bring up the tray..."

"Not there Biwi ... here..." he turned her and walked with her with his arm around her shoulder towards the balcony.

She scanned the balcony in amazement, transformed by the diyas and flowers. Catching sight of the banner she looked at Bittuji, hovering nearby who stared pleased at the mark of red on her for head.

It must have taken him a lot of effort to arrange it in such a short span of time. She was overwhelmed by his attempts to make this Karva Chauth special for her.

"Thank you Bittuji..." she started to move towards him, her eyes tearing up. But RK pulled her back, by his side. "Bittuji Biwi is infected with crying sickness today. You wouldn't want to be infected!" Then turned to Madhu and said, "Chalo Biwi, let's have dinner."

She was surprised to see that the dishes were her favourite, down to the cotton candy from her favourite shop in Chawl.

Opening her gifts later in the night, she found something else that made her ecstatic... the Suhagan bangles.

As she prepared herself for the night, the soft clinging of those bangles filled her up with a sense of belonging, belonging to the man who was thoughtful enough to buy her the gifts any wife would cherish yet hated to be considered generous.

"Biwi... why were you particular about finding out which were the last scenes shot?" his question broke into her thoughts.

"Well, I had to be sure that I did not see RK of the earlier shot scenes, didn't I?" she turned towards him as he sat down on the bed beside her..

"Why not Biwi?"

"Because I did not want to make the mistake of seeing the face of the man I hated." She replied as if made absolute sense.

He laughed out loud, "Biwi you are one of a kind!"

Once they lay down on the bed on their respective sides of the bed, with the lights switched off, he turned to look at her and asked quietly, "Hated .. past tense Biwi?

"Past tense, Patidev..." she replied, her eyes shining mysteriously in the dim light of the room, "I don't hate you anymore."

Wonderful work of fiction, chechi. I'm literally speechless at your beautiful portrayal of RishBala interactions, their emotions. Its awesome. The best part is you write their conversations in English yet I can feel the typical RishBala flavour in the dialogues..! Awesome..! I loved it a lot.. With each update, I'm learning a lot and I need to learn so much on the art of fiction-writing from u, so I'll always be there to read your fantastic work..!
