CHAPTER 2
Khushi looked out of the window of her apartment, tears streaming down her face. She looked at Krithi, lying down on the couch hugging her teddy bear, with tears streaming down her face. She had only six more years with Krithi and maybe even lesser time with herself...Maybe she should hand her over to him...?
She walked to Krithi, and took her into her lap. Krithi began to sob at her mother's touch. "Why Mamma! Why?! Why can't we all live together? I don't understand these secrets Mamma! Why do Di and Bhaiyya live with Nani, Bua, Masi and Papa? Why do we live here ALONE! Why does Papa come only once in two weeks to meet me? Does he hate me? Is that why he sent you and me away?"
"Shh Baccha! Papa doesn't hate you...He loves you very much." she consoled her daughter, and whispered, "It is ME he hates..." Khushi cried with her daughter.
She wished she could tell him...Tell him everything. But she just couldn't bring herself to tell him...
Maybe it was time to set aside her ego, and tell him. But...of what good was it now? When time and distance had filled their lives with nothing but hate for each other. She pulled up her sleeves a bit, and stared at her scarred hands. Just a few more days, and her hands would heal... What was killing her from inside, she had no control over though. Some more time Khushi...Keep courage, she told herself. After that day, everything had changed.
Khushi picked up Krithi after collecting her reports from the hospital, and went home. She decided that it was high time she told Arnavji about it. She prepared herself for seeing his agony, but also made herself ready to tell him that she could be cured and it wasn't that dangerous. She prepared herself well, but not what was waiting for her at home.
She entered RM, and changed her clothes, keeping the file in her bag. She noticed Arnav shooting outraged glances, and sometimes defeated glances at her. Her heart felt uneasy all of a sudden. After dinner, Khushi started to coax six-year-old Krithi to go sleep. Just then, Arnav came and sat next to her, and spoke to Krithi. "Krithi, where were you this afternoon?" he asked gently, but his voice had an edge to it, that only Khushi noticed.
"At Naina Mami's house Papa," Krithi said sleepily and drifted off to sleep.
Arnav pursed his lips. He couldn't believe Khushi had made the little girl lie. In fact, he didn't know any Naina Mausi! He told Khushi, "Come upstairs soon. We need to talk." and went upstairs without a word.
Wondering what was wrong, she finally convinced Krithi to go to bed, and taking the reports from her bag, headed upstairs.
"Arnavji?" she asked, peeping through the door of the bedroom, and saw his standing outside. He stiffened at her voice and walked in.
Khushi had not moved much further from the door, when he came very close to her. She did not know why, but she kept the file behind her, tightly holding onto it.
"Arnavji, I need to tell you something and-"
But she was cut off. "Where were you in the afternoon Khushi?" he asked emotionlessly.
She gulped in fear, and looked away and decided to tell him the truth. "I-I was-" she began.
But he cut her off, "Don't lie Khushi. How could you teach a child to lie?!" he asked, angrily.
Khushi frowned in confusion. "What? Arnavji, I-"
"Don't act all innocent Khushi! I saw you! How long has it been going on behind my back Khushi? When did you actually stop loving me, and drifted away from me behind my back!" he yelled at her.
Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Arnavji, do you have any idea at what you are implying?"
"Heck, YES I DO! You are having an affair behind my back!"
"WHAT! I cannot believe you are accusing me of that!" This time, her eyes were filled with fire that Arnav had never seen. "What do I need to do to prove my love to you Arnavji!"
"KHUSHI-!" "NO! LISTEN TO ME!" Khushi yelled. "I almost DIED saving YOU! I married you AGAIN after ALL that you put me through FOR SIX, MOST PAINFUL months of my life! I believed you when you said that Aarav wasn't your son! I gave myself to you BEFORE our marriage, breaking every principle I had set for MYSELF! I even GAVE you FOUR KIDS! What more do I need to do?! DIE instead of ALMOST dying?! Give you more kids?!"
Arnav was stunned into silence, but only momentarily. "I saw you with THAT MAN at the cafe today!"
She did not even realize when she had dropped the file.
Khushi's eyes widened in shock, and soon her face turned scandalized as she realized who he was talking about.
"Arnavji, he was-"
Again she was cut off. "Khushi, tell me. Is Krithi even MY daughter?" he asked, remembering how he had seen that man cuddle Krithi.
Khushi felt the breath knock out of her lungs. Did he really think she was that cheap?! Her hurt face and horrified expressions were gone in a moment. She pursed her lips, and put on a dead-pan mask, and walked to her cupboard.
She opened the door, and violently pulled out everything that belonged to her.
"What are you doing!" Arnav yelled at her. She ignored him, and simply took out a suitcase.
"KHUSHI! ANSWER ME DAMMIT!" Arnav yelled, grabbing her by her arm.
Khushi lost it. She felt she would go insane any second. "MR ARNAV SINGH RAIZADA! I TOLD YOU BEFORE THAT IF YOU THINK SO LOW OF ME, I AM NOT ANSWERABLE TO YOU! YOU DONOT DESERVE MY EXPLANATION!"
Khushi pushed him away and began packing her clothes. Neither of the parents heard footsteps running away from there (Yes, that was Aditya. It's there in Chapter 1)
"Khushi, don't try my patience! ANSWER ME!" he yelled, shaking her.
"FINE! You want answers? FINE! Mr Raizada, I am divorcing you! I cannot live with a man who shows no respect towards my principles and does not understand their values!" she said, and then facing him, she said with tears of anger in her eyes. "And most importantly, not with a man who doesn't trust me. Who doesn't trust me to the extent of saying that his child is not...his." she said, her voice breaking.
Khushi hadn't wanted to divorce him...But she had to. At that moment, it felt right. She didn't want to give her children up either...But it was better that way... She sighed, and cried a little more.
As Khushi was recollecting that terrible day, Arnav was remembering it too. He had felt furious at her mentioning divorce. Instead of trying to stop her, he had let his ego speak. "Good Riddance!" he had said instead of stopping her.
He had made sure, and tried EVERYTHING in his power to 'teach her a lesson.' Using all he had, he had made sure he got completed custody of his three children. Krithi being very young, was to be with Khushi wtill she was fifteen, and then she would be only Arnav's. His ego had blinded him so much, that he forgotten to consider his children; they had hated him from then on. Aditya had even yelled at his face. "You took away Mom from us Dad. No father does that. From today, no matter what anyone says, for me, you are no more to me. You are not a father to my heart anymore." Those words had made him realized the impact of what he had done.
Thinking back on it, Arnav began to notice details which his anger had blinded him to. She had been meaning to tell him something...he had not let her talk. He sighed and leaned back on his chair. Only Krithi loved him now; the members of the family, somehow felt that it had been Arnav's fault. They did not know the reason of the divorce, but knew his anger and irrationality. They knew thT Khushi knew and understood his anger...They did not even want to know what terrible things Arnav had said to Khushi that lead to their divorce. They also knew why the twins and Arnav did not get along...
What a broken family...
What a f*cked up day! Dad is all grumpy. I sat at the foot of Aditi's bed and looked at her, as she hugged her blanket tightly and cried silently. I knew she was tired of acting so unconcerned about Dad and she wanted to console him badly. She looks so much like Muskaan in her sleep...*sigh* Muskaan. But I couldn't forget. It wasn't Aditi who had witnessed that horrendous scene between Mom and Dad. I closed my eyes tightly, praying to God to somehow set things right.
Sighing, I got up to leave, when I heard her small voice. "Adi? I-I think we should tell him...Please? Forget about him, think about Mom. She needs us Adi. Please?"
There she goes again. "No Aditi. He doesn't deserve it. Another month Aditi. Hold on. And that file?" Aditi nodded in assurance. I went to my room and cried into my pillow. I had to be strong for my two sisters; I had lost one already hadn't I? My dear Muskaan? I couldn't see both Aditi and Krithi breaking apart like this. Well, the wait would be over on our 18th birthday in a month! I closed my eyes, trying to catch some sleep, unable to remove the vision of Mom looking paler than ever.
Sometimes, Arnav wondered whether the fact that he had separated his children from Khushi earned him their hatred, or was there something else?
Arnav wanted to apologize to his children. Sighing, expecting them not to respond to him, he walked silently to Aditi's room. He was about to open the door, when heard her words, and froze right there. "Adi? I-I think we should tell him...Please? Forget about him, think about Mom. She needs us Adi. Please?"
WHAT?! There it was again! Tell me WHAT! Arnav thought.
There was no response for a moment and then Adi spoke. "No Aditi. He doesn't deserve it. Another month Aditi. Hold on and that file?" He heard no response, and realized that Aditi must have gestured the answer.
Another month? For what?! He thought puzzled. AND what was it that he deserved to NOT know? He walked back to his room pondering over this. What the hell was the matter? Which file were they talking about!
Hearing Adi walk towards the door, Arnav sprinted to his room and sat on the recliner trying to fit the pieces of puzzle.
