Exclusive interview of Navin Waqar with Lollywood Cafe about her role in Josh, the only Pakistani film to be screened at the 14thMumbai Film Festival in 2012

By: Irene Johnson

Navin Waqar is everyone's favorite RJ! Her radio show is extremely popular and is a must-watch for all radio buffs. Her recent TV stint on Humsafar also showcased her immense depth and breadth as an actress. Making the foray from TV to film, she is starring in the Pakistani film Josh which is being screened at the 14th Mumbai Film Festival. In this exclusive, she talks to Lollywood Caf about her journey as an actress and her role in Josh.

Q1: What do you enjoy the most: radio, print or TV?

I enjoy radio the most, then TV and so on.

Q2: What do you feel has the greatest reach in Pakistan?

I think both radio and TV are powerful tools, it depends what one is using them for.

Q3: Was your character in the film Josh – that of a television reporter – a challenging one to play?

No because I have years of experience as a host and anchor so that helped me don the character of a reporter easily.

Q4: Have you ever thought of being a TV reporter in real life?

Honestly, no.

Q5: If you had not become an actress and a RJ, what profession would you have chosen?

I would've been either a writer or a psychologist.

Q6: Did you plan on becoming an actress! How did it happen?

I didn't plan on it but the way my career was taking shape, acting seemed like the next big step. I took a break from hosting because I wanted progression. I weighed my options and decided it was going to be acting. Luckily I didn't have to wait long and I was asked to be a part of Humsafar.

Q7: You must be really thrilled to hear that Josh is the only film from Pakistan to be screened at the 14th Mumbai Film Festival this year?

Absolutely. It's a great honour and I am very proud to be a part of this project. It is such a good feeling to see Pakistani films beginning to make rounds internationally. I hope it only gets better from here.

Q8: How do you think the film will be received in Mumbai?

I think Josh has a great message and it will be well received. It speaks of important issues and it is a lot of matter that people can relate to mentally and emotionally.

Q9: What are the strengths of Josh in your opinion?

I think everything in Josh–the story, the director, the cast come to make it strong. But personally I think the message and the essence of Josh is its greatest strength.

Q10: What is the message of Josh in your opinion?

For me personally I believe the message is to take a stand. The will to get up and make a change.

I guess the marriage question is taboo in this situation but they could have at least asked her what being newly married feels like and how it is going for her rather than posing a question straight up.
