Google doodle immortalises Moby Dick on its 161st

Google knows the best way in the world to immortalise history, as today it celebrates the 161st anniversary of Moby Dick and the man behind the eternal classic, Herman Melville. The squiggles created by Google have earned international appreciation as they uniquely celebrate a 'special' day, an event or a holiday or an occasion. Sometimes they come with music too.

Today's doodle depicts a scene from Melville's timeless tale, which shows Captain Ahab commandeering a boat with a harpoon in his hand, ready to strike at the enigmatic white whale. Moby-Dick is spouting in the violent sea. The water from the spurt replaces the letter 'L' in the Google logo.

Herman Melville's undying classic tells the story of Ahab, Captain of the Pequod, his revenge mission and insane chase for Moby Dick, the ferocious white whale. In Ahab's crew is Ishmael, undergoing a gruelling introspection for pursuing a different salvation. As the Pequod circles the globe like a Noah's Ark, so Moby Dick ranges and digresses through space and time, through mythologies, religions and philosophies. Moby-Dick was first published as 'The Whale' in three volumes by Richard Bentley on October 18th, 1851.

Harper & Brothers in New York published the first American edition on November 14th, 1851. In 1956, this novel was made into a movie by John Huston and starred by the famous Hollywood actor Gregory Peck.

Billions of people worldwide, as soon as they log into their systems, be it in office or at home, for work or leisure, commemorate history through the doodles. These cartons are a fun way to learn too as they enhance our general knowledge in a great way. So for as long as Google keeps doodling, the world keeps learning.
