Women thank me for inspiring them'

She is the bahu with a difference. Actor Deepa Parab who plays Sneha in 'Thodi Khushi Thode Gham' (Sony) is no servile daughter-in-law that soaps usually hinge upon. Rather, she is the new age bahu who combines convention with freedom.

The recent episodes have had Deepa heading a rebellion against orthodox father-in-law Mansukhlal (Arvind Rathore). The women in the clan, inspired by Sneha, rise against him and fight for self-expression. "Though the members respect Mansukhlal, they don't like his imposing restrictions," says Deepa who had earlier won much appreciation in Neelima Vajpayee's 'Reth'. Sharing much of Sneha's self-assertion, Deepa says, "When people recognise me on the streets and say 'Jai Jinendra!' I feel satisfied. Women from joint families often thank me for being so inspiring."

Incidentally, Deepa trained for acting at Vaman Kendriya and Satyadev Dubey's workshops. Having done Marathi theatre and films, Deepa won an award for the Marathi film 'Chakwa' last year.

Quiz her whether her views on marriage are as progressive and she says, "Marriage is a beautiful institution but needs a lot of adjustments. I'd definitely want to continue working after marriage." She continues, "The idea is not to break up a family. Rather, it's all about handling conflicts with patience and determination." The homely girl has global dreams. "I want to tour the world by ship. Mauritius, South Africa and Switzerland are my dream destinations."
