Fourth part, coming right up!
"Bitiya, here, have some water," said Daadi gently.
She lifted her head obediently, her cold hands going around the glass as she raised it to her lips and drank, her eyes on her brother's still unmoving form while he stood staring at his pool. She was just about to ask him what his decision was when the water spilled from her mouth and all over her chin.
"Oh!"
Her hands rubbed away the moisture, leaving her mouth in a mess of lipstick, tears and foundation. She smiled at an anxious Daadi to show her all was well; she then clambered to her feet and limped towards her brother, placing a loving hand on his broad shoulder.
"Chotey," she said softly. "Chotey, look at me."
He did not stiffen at her touch, nor did he yell. His body felt loose and easy, and she was delighted. He was not resisting her! Slowly, as though in a daze, he turned. His face was impassive, a mask. He had still not looked at her, nor met her eyes. But she understood what he was going through, she understood his pain. She knew that he needed some time, that he drew strength from not appearing weak.
She cupped his face, the stubble scratching her palms.
"Chotey, look at me, please."
"Chotey, I promise, everything will be okay. I will make everything okay again."
Rough hands grabbed her wrists, pulling her own away from his cheeks. She gasped at the pain as her wrists were rendered in a painful squeeze, and found her eyes locked with those of a monster, a monster with blazing eyes, of red hot glowing coal.
"You think this is painful, Di?"
He squeezed them harder, showing no mercy, showing no remorse, showing no feeling.
"This is nothing."
*
"This is nothing."
He pushed her away, disgusted with himself, disgusted with her, disgusted with everyone for this terrible turn of events. He squeezed his eyes shut, hot, angry tears spilling as the images rushed back with a vengeance, her in a blue chamkili suit, her arms twisted behind her back as he had pulled her against him, her tears rendering his heart free of any words or intentions he had had after her "character dheela" comment.
"You have no idea, Di. NO IDEA, DAMMIT!"
The two women winced in fright, obviously terrorized for their safety. He paid them no heed, his heart restless, his feet aching to run downstairs and whisk her away from the mad crowd. Khushi had endured much, much worse. For everything that had gone wrong, it was always her who paid the price. He screwed his eyes shut again as pain flooded his veins, as her smiling, happy face glued itself to the backs of his eyelids. She was a shining beacon, shouting at the world to make her the scapegoat, and the world always, always obliged.
*
The situation was going out of control - never, never had she thought that he would hurt her. Her little brother! Her only blood in this world. They had nobody else but each other, and the close little knit of people who could be trusted. Her brother had to be made to see the truth. She straightened herself, gently shaking off Daadi's hand from her arm.
"Chotte-"
Her words were cut short as he turned abruptly towards them. She held her breath, waiting for him to speak. And then -
*
"Enough."
They stared at him, their eyes clouded, and he felt an aching pain in his heart for his sister, the woman he had done so much for, the woman who Khushi had done so much for, the woman who chose repeatedly to side against the truth, to now side against his Khushi.
"I have nothing else to say to you. And I will hear nothing more."
He looked at his sister, feeling something inside him break and shatter. For a moment, he paused, memorizing the details of her face, of the woman he considered his mother. His eyes slowly made their way beyond her head to where the giant clock hung, flicking away time like rotten flies.
He was late.
She is waiting. She must be wondering where I am. She must be hurt. She must think I'm doing this just to hurt her, just out of spite. She needs to know, she needs to know that I -
Oh Khushi, I'm so sorry!
He looked back at his sister and his grandmother, both slightly cowering, their postures so unlike the one of a young girl who would never back down, who had dared to wag her finger at him, to shove him at the chest.
"You disappoint me."
He spat it at them, his heart hardening at the venom in his own words, as simple as they were, and ignoring their cries of outrage, he stormed past them and out of his room, leaving the doors banging in his wake.
