The subject of the film is not a never-before attempted one but to give the director his due, he's tackled it in a slightly different way. The first half is fun with lots of light moments but the second half is a little boring with unwanted drama and forced comedy.
Anu (Priyanka Chopra), a London-based Indian, is living in Mumbai after her break-up with Danny (Dino Morea). Surprisingly, she lacks a firang accent! But she's forced to return to London for her stepsister, Shirani's (Amisha Patel) wedding. Shirani is getting married to a New York-based Gujju, Kunal Shah (Suniel Shetty). Surprisingly all the characters in the film lack a firang accent. In true filmi style, Danny is Kunal's best friend.
Anu plans to woo Danny back. She hires an escort, Aman (Akshaye Khanna), who all has to do is accompany her to the wedding as her new beau. This is to make Danny jealous. But there is a twist in the tale.
| It's revealed later that Shirani was involved with Danny after he broke up with Anu! A little hard to believe, that a sister who loves Anu dearly would even get involved with her ex-boyfriend, especially the one who'd ditched her! Initially only Aman is privy to the information about Shirani and Danny's affair. By this time he also realizes that he's in love with Anu. But Anu does not seem to reciprocate his feelings. But why on earth does a heartbroken Anu suddenly go running into his arms on hearing about Danny's love for Shirani! There's a bit of tension built up until everything is sorted out in the end.
The film has some really funny scenes between Akshaye and Priyanka. Even the dialogues are fun. The sequences between the parents (Anupam Kher, and Lilette Dubey) seem slightly over the top. The film has more than its share of flaws. How and when do Akshaye and Priyanka fall in love with each other? The relationship between two has not been developed at all. It also looks like she falls in love with Akshaye more on the rebound when she realizes that Dino loves her sister, Amisha. Secondly, when Amisha tells Suniel about her association with Dino, why doesn't she specify that it was in the past and avoid unwanted drama? What exactly is Dino looking for by confessing to Amisha, that too a day before her marriage, that he loves her truly and deeply, especially when she seems to be happy about her marriage to Suniel, who also happens to be his best friend! Himesh Reshamiya's music is good but somehow the songs sound very similar to each other! They have the same rhythm. The cinematography is nothing to rave about. Some of the dialogues are irritating especially the ones with double meaning. |
| Now for the performances. Akshaye Khanna seems to have got the best lines. The film is worth watching only for his antics. Aman is a light-hearted character and he plays it the right way. Priyanka Chopra goes over the top in some places but is okay otherwise. Dino looks the suave guy he's expected to be. Amisha overdoes her facial expressions, as usual. She also needs to seriously do something about her taste in clothes. Suniel Shetty is okay. Anupam Kher and Lilette Dubey tend to go over the top in places. We wonder why the latter displays an ample amount of cleavage throughout!
On the whole, the prospects of 'Aap Ki Khatir' don't seem too great.
