if it had been a muslim family it would have been fine because adoption don't have any legal or religious significance unless both the boy and girl got their first meals from the same women.

as far as hindus are concerned its ambiguous. as said by kiran bedi during aapki adalat according to hindu marriage act a man can't marry his brother's widow.
