CHAPTER 6 SCENE 3

[Cut to Aakash's new house]

Aakash and Payal are supervising the loading of their luggage into the house. Arnav is sitting in his car, staring straight ahead as if lost in some thought. Aakash taps on window's glass. Arnav's chain of thoughts break and he unwinds the glass.

"Bhai, humne saara samaan rakhwa diya hai. Aap andar nahin aaoge?" Aakash says. Arnav shakes his head but doesn't say anything aloud. Aakash frowns.

"Bhai is everything ok? Raaste bhar bhi aapne kuch baat nahin ki?" he wonders. Arnav's body suddenly goes rigid.

"I'm just uncomfortable Aakash!" he retorts, enveloping his annoyance with fake calmness. Aakash corelates the water incident with Arnav's discomfort.

"Ohh right, bhai. Aap bheeg gaye hain." Aakash replies. Immediately, Khushi's mockingly sweet voice fills up Arnav's head Arre yeh kya hua? Aap to bheeg gaye! Arnav grips the steering wheel tightly.

"Aakash, main ghar ja raha hun! Change karke office jaunga. Tum apna kaam finish karke office aa jana. Aaj Goel Textiles ke CEO ke saath post lunch meeting hai," Arnav reels off in a businesslike tone. Before Aakash can confirm his answer, Arnav switches on the ignition and pulls out of the driveway of the house. Aakash stares bemusedly.

Irritation starts coursing all through Arnav's body like an electric current. He had been quiet all through the car ride to Aakash's new house because he was mentally replaying Khushi's answer in a loop. Hum wapis nahin aayenge... Arnav grinds his teeth in anger. Everytime I go close to her, I end up being snubbed. Despite knowing the truth about her mother, I'm still asking her to come back. How can she just brush me aside then? Arnav notices the traffic lights have changed to red and slams his foot on the brake. His car halts with a screech; fellow commuters behind him yell out obsceneties.

Arnav lets out a grunt of frustration. I bought Aakash a new home; I supported his decision. I was even polite to Payal. And I apologised to Khushi. What the hell does she want from me? He bangs his hand against the steering wheel in aggravation. Woh khud ko samajhti kya hai? Mujhe akad dikha rahi hai? Arnav Singh Raizada ko? It was an unsettling feeling; after spending so many years being a ruthless businessman he wasn't used to such repeated failure. Or, rejection for that matter.

The traffic starts moving but his anger still remains unabated. As Khushi's refusal threatens to echo once more in his head, he creates a mental barricade. Nahin aana hai na tumhe wapis Miss Khushi Kumari Gupta? To mat aao! Ab main bhi nahin bulaunga tumhe! He resolves to himself infuriatedly and speeds towards Shantivan.

[Cut to Raizada Mansion, later in the evening]

Arnav is in his room working on his laptop. He is distracted by a knock on the door and looks up to see his Dadi standing at the door. She holds a buff coloured envelope which looks heavy. Arnav's curiosity picks up.

"Haan Dadi. Kahiye?" he enquries. Dadi confindently walks into the room.

"Arnav, humein aapse kuch property related baat karni hai. Aap thoda samaye de sakte hain?" she asks him politely.

"Property related? Haan kahiye. Main sun raha hun."

Dadi quietly places the buff envelope next to his laptop. "Ye ghar ke kuch kagazaat hain. Lucknow se hamare wakeel ne bheje hain. Isme likha hai ki hum Lucknow ki Purani Haveli aapke naam kar rahe hain." Arnav looks lost now.

"Purani Haveli? Ye kaun si jagah hai?"

"Sheesh Mahal mein rehne se pehle, hum Purani Haveli mein rehte the. Aap uss samaye paida nahin hue the isiliye aapko uss ghar ke bare mein pata nahin hai. Par Anjali bitiya jaanti hai. Unka poora bachpan usi ghar mein beeta hai. Aur jab hum Sheesh Mahal se nikaal diye gaye the, humne parivar ka kuch purana samaan usi ghar mein rakhwa diya tha." Arnav looks down at the stack of papers peeping out of the envelope and looks back to his Dadi confusedly.

"To aap ye mere naam kyun karna chahti hain?" he enquires.

"Arnav, jab hum ashram gaye the to sab kuch aapke aur Anjali bitiya ke liye chod gaye the. Par woh ghar aaj bhi hamare naam mein hai. Aur jo kuch bhi hamara hai, hamare jaane ke baad to hamare pote ka hi hai na." Dadi explains betraying a rare sense of emotion. Arnav's eyes narrow.

"Dadi, maine woh ghar dekha bhi nahin hai." Dadi sighs dramatically.

"Humein lag raha tha aap yahi kahenge. Hum sab agle hafte Lucknow ja hi rahe hain, aapke mata pita ke shradh poojan ke liye. Aap tab woh ghar dekh lijiyega aur tassali bhi kar lijiyega." Dadi seems to have an answer ready for every objection he raised.

But Arnav seems to have caught on to what Dadi just said about going to Lucknow. "Shradh poojan hamesha iss ghar mein hota aaya hai. To fir achanak Lucknow jane ki baat kahan se aayi?" he asks, irritated that he wasn't included in the decision making.

"Humne hi kaha tha sabse. Jo kuch ashaanti chal rahi hai ghar mein, hum nahin chahte ki woh pooja mein badha dale." Dadi replies stoically. Arnav frowns. All this talk about pooja had always failed to make any sense to him. As a rule he had stopped questioning about them and just gone along with the plan.

"Theek hai Dadi. Aap papers yahin rehne dijiye, main check karke signatures kar doonga." Arnav relents. Dadi's face lights up with a smile.

"Dhanyawaad Arnav. Dastakhat karne ke baad ye kagaz humein lauta dijiyega. Humein inko humare wakeel ko wapis bhejne hain." Dadi adjusts her pallu and walks out of the room. Arnav stares at the door for a moment, again lost in thought. Something doesn't add up in his mind. He picks up the phone and dials a number.

"Hello Mr. Das! Mere paas kuch property ownership transfer ke papers hain. I'd like you to look through them before I sign them... Great! I'll send them to you tomorrow morning then. Good night Mr. Das." He gives the envelope one last look before going back to his work.

[Cut to Gupta House, Next afternoon]

Buaji is resting in her room and Khushi is in the kitchen making jalebies. She had spoken to her sister some time back and she sounded happy on the phone. But Khushi isn't fooled. She knows Payal was feeling uncomfortable living in the big house all by herself. She thinks back to the way things had turned out in the past few days. She remembers Arnav's explanation of his generosity, his desperate bid in asking her to return. She starts to feel annoyed. Laad Governer kahin ka!

Suddenly the phone rings.

"Buaji aap lete rahiye. Hum dekhte hain kiska phone hai." Khushi announces and picks up the phone. It's her mother.

"Khuseee? Hum Amma bol rahe hain!" comes the voice from the other end. A smile lights up Khushi's face.

"Amma! Aap kaise ho? Aur Bauji Kaise hain?" Khushi asks excitedly.

"Hum ache hain Khusee. Humne bauji ke bare mein hi phone kiya hai." Garima mumbles. The smile on Khushi's face is instantly replaced with a concerned look.

"Sab theek to hai na Amma?" Khushi asks anxiously.

"Khusee! Tum viswas nahin karogi hum tumhe kya batane wale hain!" Khushi is suddenly taken aback to hear Garima's excited reply. "Tumre bauji ko humne yahan dikhaya tha. Dilli aur Bambai se kuch doctor hain yahan jo kehte hain ki tumre bauji theek ho sakat hain!" Khushi is struck speechless for a moment.

"Sach mein Amma?" she whispers, tears of happiness springing up in her eyes.

"Haan bitiya! Sach mein. Unhone kaha yii chikitsa camp khatam hone par, agle hafte inka operation karenge. Aur yahin Lucknow mein hi karenge." Garima explains. The word operation brings back a ton of thoughts into Khushi's mind.

"Amma. Ye to sach mein bahut khushi ki baat hai. Par..." she halts unsure how to form her next words. "Operation ka kharcha kitna hoga?" Garima also goes quiet.

"5 se 6 lakh tak. Wohi sochke humein chinta ho rahi hai Khusee. Tumre bauji ki bachat se shayad 1 lakh tak mil jaye. Jo kuch baki paise bache the, woo to tumri shaadi ke liye kharch ho gaye," Garima's voice becomes sad. Khushi feels a lump in her throat. Shaadi, jo hui nahin.

Khushi consoles her mother. "Amma aap paison ki bilkul bhi chinta mat kijiye. Hum intezaam karte hain. Aap Bauji ke ilaaj shuru karne ke liye doctoron se baat kijiye. Hum bhi agle hafte Lucknow aa rahe hain aapke saath rehne ke liye." Khushi says assuredly.

"Achha bitiya, doctor kuch aur test ke liye bula rahat humein. Payal ko humra pyaar dena." Garima hastily replies and the phone line goes dead.

Khushi is lost in thought again. She starts pacing around in the room. 5 lakh! Itni badi rakam hum kahan se layenge. She decides she won't tell Buaji about this. She barely had any savings of her own, it won't be fair. If Payal comes to know, she'll probably tell Jeejaji and he will want to help. Nahin Khushi! Tu kisi ke ehsaan tale nahin dab sakti. Yaad rakh! Khushi mentally admonishes herself. She picks up a jalebi from the stack kept in the kitchen and bites into it. Soch Khushi soch. Tere paas 7 din hain in paison ka jugaad karne ke liye. Par kaise...? Suddenly she pauses and looks down at the jalebi she's holding in her hand, a look of comprehension dawns on her face. She picks up her mobile phone and scrolls through the contacts. After finding the right number, she quickly dials it.

"Hello? Shukla ji?"

"Bhai, we have kept all the luggage. Don't you want to come in?" Aakash says. Arnav shakes his head but doesn't say anything aloud. Aakash frowns.

"Bhai is everything ok? You didn't utter a word all through the drive?" he wonders. Arnav's body suddenly goes rigid.

"I'm just uncomfortable Aakash!" he retorts, enveloping his annoyance with fake calmness. Aakash corelates the water incident with Arnav's discomfort.

"Ohh right, bhai. You are soaked." Aakash replies. Immediately, Khushi's mockingly sweet voice fills up Arnav's head Arre what happened? You're completely drenched! Arnav grips the steering wheel tightly.

"Aakash, I'm going home! I'll change into dry clothes and head to the office. You also wrap it up here and reach office. Today we have a post lunch meeting with the CEO of Goel Textiles," Arnav reels off in a businesslike tone. Before Aakash can confirm his answer, Arnav switches on the ignition and pulls out of the driveway of the house. Aakash stares bemusedly.

He bangs his hand against the steering wheel in aggravation. What the hell does she think of herself? She's showing her ego to me? To Arnav Singh Raizada? It was an unsettling feeling; after spending so many years being a ruthless businessman he wasn't used to such repeated failure. Or, rejection for that matter.

The traffic starts moving but his anger still remains unabated. As Khushi's refusal threatens to echo once more in his head, he creates a mental barricade. You don't want to come back, right Miss Khushi Kumari Gupta? Then don't! Even I'm not going to call you back now!

"Yes Dadi. What is it?" he enquries. Dadi confindently walks into the room.

"Arnav, I need to speak with you about some property related matters. Do you have some time?" she asks him politely.

"Property related? Yes tell me. I'm listening."

Dadi quietly places the buff envelope next to his laptop. "These are some house-related papers. My lawyer in Lucknow has sent these. It's written in these papers that I'm naming you owner of the Purani Haveli in Lucknow." Arnav looks lost now.

"Purani Haveli? Which house is that?"

"Before living in Sheesh Mahal, we used to live in Purani Haveli. You weren't born back then, that is why you don't know of it. But Anjali does. She has spent a considerable amount of her childhood there. When we were evicted from Sheesh Mahal, I kept some of our family's belongings in that old house." Arnav looks down at the stack of papers peeping out of the envelope and looks back to his Dadi confusedly.

"Why do you want to transfer ownership to me?" he enquires.

"Arnav, when I left for the Ashram, I left back everything for you and Anjali. But I didn't realise that that house is still in my name. And whatever I own, after I'm gone rightfully belongs to you." Dadi explains betraying a rare sense of emotion. Arnav's eyes narrow.

"Dadi, I haven't even seen that house yet." Dadi sighs dramatically.

"I was thinking you'd say this. We all are leaving next week for your parents' Shradh pooja. You can inspect the house then to your satisfaction." Dadi seems to have an answer ready for every objection he raised.

But Arnav seems to have caught on to what Dadi just said about going to Lucknow. "Shradh poojan always takes place in this house. Who said anything about going to Lucknow?" he asks, irritated that he wasn't included in the decision making.

"I did. Whatever unrest is going on in this house, I don't want it to create problems for the poojan." Dadi replies stoically. Arnav frowns. All this talk about pooja had always failed to make any sense to him. As a rule he had stopped questioning about them and just gone along with the plan.

"Fine Dadi. You can leave the papers here. I'll see through them and then sign them." Arnav relents. Dadi's face lights up with a smile.

"Thank you Arnav. Please return them to me after you have signed them. I'll need to send these back to my lawyer." Dadi adjusts her pallu and walks out of the room. Arnav stares at the door for a moment, again lost in thought. Something doesn't add up in his mind. He picks up the phone and dials a number.

"Hello Mr. Das! I have some papers relating to property ownership transfer . I'd like you to look through them before I sign them... Great! I'll send them to you tomorrow morning then. Good night Mr. Das." He gives the envelope one last look before going back to his work.

[Cut to Gupta House, Next afternoon]

She knows Payal was feeling uncomfortable living in the big house all by herself. She thinks back to the way things had turned out in the past few days. She remembers Arnav's explanation of his generosity, his desperate bid in asking her to return. She starts to feel annoyed. That stupid Laad Governer!

Suddenly the phone rings.

"Buaji please don't get up. I'll see who it is." Khushi announces and picks up the phone. It's her mother.

"Khuseee? This is your mother speaking!" comes the voice from the other end. A smile lights up Khushi's face.

"Amma! How are you? How's father?" Khushi asks excitedly.

"I'm fine Khusee. I've called you regarding your father." Garima mumbles. The smile on Khushi's face is instantly replaced with a concerned look.

"Is everything alright Amma?" Khushi asks anxiously.

"Khusee! You won't believe what I'm about to tell you!" Khushi is suddenly taken aback to hear Garima's excited reply. "I had your father looked at by doctors here. Some doctors from Delhi and Mumbai claim that your father can be cured!" Khushi is struck speechless for a moment.

"Really Amma?" she whispers, tears of happiness springing up in her eyes.

"Yes dear! Really. They said, once the medical camp finishes, they'll operate on him next week. And that too here in Lucknow itself." Garima explains. The word operation brings back a ton of thoughts into Khushi's mind.

"Amma. This is really incredible news. But..." she halts unsure how to form her next words. "How much would the operation cost us?" Garima also goes quiet.

"About 5 to 6 lakhs. I'm getting worried thinking about that only, Khusee. I think I can manage about 1 lakh from your Bauji's savings. Whatever remained was spent for your wedding," Garima's voice becomes sad. Khushi feels a lump in her throat. The wedding which never happened.

Khushi consoles her mother. "Amma please don't worry about the money at all. I'll arrange for it. You speak to the doctors to start father's treatment. I'll come down to Lucknow next week in time for the operation." Khushi says assuredly.

"Ok dear. The doctor is calling me for some more tests. Give Payal my love." Garima hastily replies and the phone line goes dead.

Khushi is lost in thought again. She starts pacing around in the room. 5 lakhs! How will I get such a big amount? She decides she won't tell Buaji about this. She barely had any savings of her own, it won't be fair. If Payal comes to know, she'll probably tell Jeejaji and he will want to help. No Khushi! Remember, you can't live with anyone's favours! Khushi mentally admonishes herself. She picks up a jalebi from the stack kept in the kitchen and bites into it. Think Khushi think. You have 7 days to arrange for the money, But how...? Suddenly she pauses and looks down at the jalebi she's holding in her hand, a look of comprehension dawns on her face. She picks up her mobile phone and scrolls through the contacts. After finding the right number, she quickly dials it.

"Hello? Shukla ji?"

As expected from you, A very exciting part again!!

Arnav, for once (unlike in the serial), has shown his intelligence by calling up his lawyer to check the property papers given by Dadi before signing them. Khushi needs 5 lakhs in 7 days...would Shukla ji be able to help her!??!?!?! Tension mounts...

THANKS A LOT for the PM.
