Mohammed Azharrudin is set for a clean, fresh and new innings. He has agreed to be a part of a cricket-based show, tentatively called Beach Cricket. The former India skipper had always expressed a desire to be part of the showbiz world but the news is being kept hush-hush for now. On the show, the ex-captain will not only showcase his cricket gyaan but also give shape to the project.
Azhar has been approached for the show by actor-turned-producer Anuj Saxena's Maverick Productions. According to our source, the cricketer visited the Maverick Productions office in Andheri a few days ago. It is learnt that he has already signed the contract and has been advised not to divulge any details about the show.
Saxena keeps mum
When asked about the project Saxena, now seen as Suhas in the Sony daily Risshton Ki Dor, prefers to keep mum. We hear that Beach Cricket will be a series on cricket with Azhar hosting the show. The show is part of the production house's strategy for next year's big ticket — the cricket World Cup in West Indies.
Says a source from Maverick, "Beach Cricket is in the initial stages of conceptualisation. Azhar has agreed to be the mainstay of the series. At the moment, all the nitty-gritties are being worked upon. It is slated to go on the floors early next year. The channel has yet to be ascertained."
The show will be Azhar's return to the limelight. After Azhar's name figured in a match-fixing scandal, he was banned from playing first class cricket. In the last couple of years, Azhar, a fitness enthusiast himself, set up a gym called Est (French for is) in his hometown Hyderabad. He had expressed a desire to get into film and TV but nothing worked out. Until now.
Sangeeta's tryst with television
Four years ago, his actress wife Sangeeta Bijlani had produced TV shows (Hasna Mat/Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke/ Kinare Miltey Nahin Hain besides an English play Amar Akbar Anne Toni which was directed by Dinyar Contractor.
It's now her hubby's turn for some screen space, off the cricket field.
