Some cultures are predominantly collective in their thinking whereas others are more individualistic with I , me, myself notions predominating.

What are the merits and demerits of each?

Individuality is born with u, it is ur being...I think soceity dont like ppls individualities...so most of them try to compromise, bt its true that more you compromise, the less u are an individual...keeping individuality or an individual is the hardest thing in the world, becos nobody likes you to be an individual... Everybody wants to kill ur individuality and to make a sheep out of you...but if you want to keep ur individuality...express your individuality let existence be proud of you..😊

good topic...πŸ‘πŸΌ

i believe an individual should have both, if one refutes the society and becomes an individual of his or her choice then he or she may be outcast from society, and living alone without society is difficult, an individual should adhere to the norms of society else an utter chaos will occur.. but that doesnt mean he or she should be like a slave to society

just think what would happen if every individual behaved exactly as he wished without a care about any other. How long would that continue before getting into fights πŸ˜›

I think u misunderstood with personality and inviduality...you can get different type of personality depend on situation, personality is something that is given by the society/peoples...but we all born with an individuality of our own.😊

OK. What I was trying to get at is whether individuality should always have priority over social norms and what could be the consequences of either .

Collectivism

Pros
- Strength in numbers
- Cooperation
- Reduced conflicts due to shared goals
- Society that cares for each other

Cons
- Herd/mob mentality
- Majority wins irrespective of rationale
- Stifles individual creativity
- Discourages questioning or thinking differently

Individualism

Pros
- Meritocracy
- Reliance on self rather than others
- Visionary/Pioneering/Different/Creative behavior
- Avoids just going with the flow

Cons
- Fosters selfishness
- Too many conflicts as each one goes their own way
- Lack of caring and compassion
- Lacks cooperation and working together

As with everything in life, balance is the key. You give and take from both to reduce the negatives and increase positives. Sometimes it is good to be an individual, sometimes it is good to align with a group. But making that choice requires wisdom, it is never easy or clear cut.
