KANK : 72 Crores first week Worldwide
KARAN JOHAR'S multi-starrer Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) looks set to break all records overseas. On the domestic circuit, KANK opened on August 11 with 97 per cent collections. Considering that the strategy these days is to bombard screens with a large number of prints, KANK looks set to capture the top spot this week too.
AS per EDINielsen, a UK-based tracking network, KANK has earned the highest initial ever by an Indian film overseas. In the UK, it's No. 6 on the charts after amassing 754,877 pounds during the first weekend, thrice the first weekend collection of Krrish (210,499 pounds).
Opening at No. 17 in the US, KANK earned $1,351,786 in its first weekend. The film also headed straight for the top spot in Australia ($235,016) during its opening weekend.
Domestically, trade analysts are waiting anxiously to tabulate the figures. Said analyst Vinod Mirani, "Within India, KANK gets its maximum earnings from the Mumbai circuit, netting a profit of more than Rs 5 crore in its first week." That's way ahead of Fanaa and Krrish, said sources, who also added that the Delhi-UP circuit comes next, where KANK collected about Rs 4.5 crore.
Taran Adarsh, trade analyst said, "KANK is a superhit, no doubt." Though there have been news of the film not doing well in smaller centres like Jamnagar, Ajmer, Ghazi abad, etc, figures prove otherwise. While it may be debated that Krrish and Fanaa had the upper hand on KANK, this could be attributed to the fact that these movies had abundant masala for the mass audience. Yet, KANK scored better than both in places like Jamnagar (where it broke all previous records by collecting Rs 7.56 lakh at Mehul Cinema), Ajmer (theatre record at Maya Mandir - Rs 8.30 lakh). The collection in Lucknow in three screens – Rave I & II and Novelty – – touched a whopping Rs 35 lakh.
Even in Ghaziabad, where KANK was screened at all 11 multiplexes and two singlescreen theatres, it collected a gigantic Rs 75 lakh. In Indore the film garnered the highestever collection in three cinemas – Inox, PVR and Velocity – amounting to Rs 27 lakh. KANK also registered the highest earnings in Chennai's Satyam Cinema, by col lecting Rs 32 lakh, a record for any language in the last 30 years. And at Inox, Bangalore, it collected around Rs 22 lakh, again a record for the multiplex.
KANK also created a record by collecting around Rs 20 lakh at Neelam, Farid abad, Rs 11 lakh at Jaipur's Raj Mandir, Rs 21.31 lakh at Delhi's Priya theatre and Rs 12 lakh at Kolkata's Fame Highland.
The worldwide first week gross for KANK is Rs 72 crore as against Rs 69 crore for Krrish.
