Chapter 8
Maanvi was crying. All those memories that she had tried to forgotten had now come back all because of the Vadhera brothers. Just because of them, her past life had entered her mind once again. Tears rolled heavily down her soft, pale cheek. For all she knew, Viraj was a guy who she never wanted to think about again.
*Flashback*
"BEEP" Maanvi looked over her shoulder. A smile crept upon her face. "Viraj" she said as she wore her latest designer dress. Viraj had gifted it to her on their first ever date. After applying her eye liner and lip gloss, she quickly shut her door and skipped out of the hostel's lobby.
"Mans wait up!" shouted a voice as Maanvi turned around to see her best friend Genelia waving her hands in the air. Maanvi laughed as she approached her friend and gave her a tight hug.
"Where the hell do you think you're going madam? It's 12 o'clock and you're not in bed! Tut-tut-tut!" Genelia said in a loud voice that made her friend laugh.
"Seriously Gen, you can never fail on imitating people. Jaldi chal before the matron actually comes out and says that!" Maanvi replied as the two friends ran out of the hostel and into her car.
"First, tu saj daj ke kaha ja rahi hai? Viraj se milne?" teased Genelia as Maanvi slapped her shoulder. Genelia screamed in pain as Maanvi laughed and drove out of their hostel car park.
"Of course I'm going to meet him. Who else would I meet? As if you just didn't come back from meeting Riteish..." Maanvi replied as Genelia blushed!
"OMG! How the hell did you know?" Genelia questioned, totally confused.
"Look over there." she said as she pointed to a boy who was waving at them. The girls waved back and carried on with their discussion.
Maanvi's phone lit up. Viraj. She smiled and picked it up.
"Hey Viraj." she greeted.
"Hi babes. I'm so sorry but I can't come. You know that I've been having family problems and all. My bro's in hospital so I had to go there to look after him. I know you'll understand. You know how much my family means to me." Viraj said apologetically as Maanvi sighed.
"I know. Shall I come th..?" Before Maanvi could complete her sentence Viraj denied quickly. "You don't need to come. I'm fine here. You just have fun with Gen. Bye"
She hung up. Genelia looked at her.
"Don't worry Mans. Leave him. That's his usual excuse. Let's have fun. Girls night-out! Oh look, there's our fave club. Chal." Gen said as Maanvi shook her head. "Oh come on. Don't be a lazy butt." She dragged her friend into the club. They sat down at the bar and ordered some squash.
All of a sudden, Maanvi noticed Viraj. He was standing in the corner, talking to someone.
"Gen, wait I'm coming in a minute." Maanvi told her friend as she slowly walked towards him. For some reason her left eye was blinking. Her mum always use to say that if your left eye blink, something bad is going to happen. Maanvi's heartbeats were getting faster and faster in each step. She hid behind the wall and looked at Viraj.
"I love you Jhanvi." he said as he hugged a girl. Maanvi was gobsmacked.
"Jhaan..vii.." she muttered as tears rapidly fell down her cheeks. She wanted to confront them but she didn't have the strength. All this time, she had been thinking that Viraj had loved her. But it was pretence. She clenched her fists tightly. " I have to confront him!"
Slowly, Maanvi walked up to him. She tapped him on the shoulder. Viraj turned around and was shocked. "Ma...Maa..Maanvi!" he said. Maanvi slapped him across the face.
"Viraj, how could you do this to me?!" Maanvi cried out loudly. "You were my whole world Viraj. My whole world! First you lie to me saying your brother's in hospital but you're here with HER!" Jhanvi went up to Maanvi.
"Look Maanvi. You're getting this wrong. I was upset so Viraj was comforting me. That's all!" Jhanvi explained as she put her arms around Maanvi's shoulder.
"DON'T YOU DARE!" Maanvi shouted as she pushed Jhanvi off. Viraj grabbed Maanvi's arm and took her to the corner.
"Maanvi...Why are you creating a scene? Stop being such a drama queen." Viraj said as Maanvi tried to free herself off his grasp.
"I'm being a drama queen? Why shouldn't I? The girl I thought was my best friend, the one who I trusted has broken that trust! She's flirting with you and you're saying 'I love you' to her? And you think I shouldn't be upset and angry? Why Viraj, why did you do this to me?" she said as she broke down into tears.
"You're gonna go back to India in a few weeks anyway. There's no point being those long distant couples who can't even meet. And anyways, I cba with you anymore. Jhanvi's much better. You just go on about your sister Jeevika. That's all you ever talk about. I means, who nowadays loves their sister so much? You don't even have time for your boyfriend." Viraj replied.
Maanvi was furious! If anyone insulted her sister, she wouldn't bear it. She slapped him 3 times.
"That's what you get if you insult my sister! She means the world to me! I loved you as much as her. If she found out what you done today, she would kill you! No one can separate us not even you! I hate you Viraj. Never come in front of my face again. I hope you and Jhanvi understand what a friend actually means. Oh and the true meaning of a sister." Maanvi exclaimed as she stormed out of the club, Genelia following behind.
Later at the hostel, Jeevika kept on ringing Maanvi but she wasn't picking up. Jeevika was worried sick. Finally Maanvi picked up.
"Mannu! Tu kyun phone nahi utha rahi thi?? Main yaha pareshaan ho rahi hoon aur...Maanvi? You there?" Jeevika said. Maanvi began to weep.
"Dii..." she cried.
"Mannu...kya hua? Why are you crying? Did Viraj do anything?" Jeevika asked, worried.
"Di woh.." Maanvi began as she narrated the whole story. Her sister was shocked. Jeevika tried to hold back her tears,
"Maine kaha tha ki Viraj sahi larka nahi hai! Uski itni himaat kaisi hui ke wo meri behen ko hurt kare? Main London aa rahi hoon." Jeevika said angrily.
"No Di. Don't come. Khamakha taqleef utane paregi. I'll book the tickets and come this week. Just don't tell mum and dad. And once I reach there, I don't want to talk about it." Maanvi said as she hung up the phone.
*End of Flashback*
Jeevika was sitting in her room, staring out of the window. She knew that Maanvi must have been thinking about Viraj. Jeevika still remembered the day Maanvi had called her. Silently she cried. She thought about Maanvi and decided to check on her.
Maanvi was sleeping peacefully. Jeevika sighed a sigh of relief as she tucked her sister under the duvet. As Jeevika was walking out of the room, Maanvi called for her in her sleep. She immediately turned around.
"Di, don't ever leave me." Maanvi mumbled.
"I won't. Never." Jeevika replied as she kissed her sister's forhead and went back to her room.
Morning arrived. The Chaudhry's were fast asleep. However, Jeevika had woken up early to cook breakfast for her sister. She was making all of Maanvi's favourite food like Aloo Paratha, Chicken curry etc. The aroma had reached Maanvi's room. She woke up to find her sister at her bedside.
"Garma garam nashta for Maanvi Ma'am." Jeevika said cheerfully as she placed the tray on Maanvi's lap.
"Wow Di! Aloo ke paratha!" Maanvi smiled but instantly it faded away. "Mujhe bhook nahi hai."
"Mannu...Past ko bhool ja. Forget Viraj. Just think of him as a toy that you loved but now have thrown out of your life. All you need now is a new one." Jeevika said.
"Di...I don't ever want to fall in love again." Maanvi replied.
"Mannu. Acha theek hai. Have your food atleast. Made all your favourites." Jeevika pleaded as Maanvi took a bite. She licked her lips and showed a thumbs up to her sister.
"Woh Mannu...Viren asked us if we wanted to go to the cinema and I said yeah. So you have to come with us. Virat's not going." Jeevika said as Maanvi smiled.
"Still Di, I don't want to go. Mann nahi kara. You and Jiju go." Maanvi whispered.
"Jiju?" Jeevika asked. Maanvi laughed as Jeevika realised what she was trying to say. She chased her sister around the room as they threw the pillows at each other.
"Di look. Jiju's behind you." Maanvi announced.
"Where?" Jeevika said as she turned around to see no one there. "Maanvi, chup kar. Stop saying this Jiju nonsense okay?"
"Di main sach bol rahi hoon. Look behind you."
"Maanvi. I know there's no one..." Jeevika began as she turned around to see Viren smiling and waving his hand.
"Hi.." Jeevika said, looking embarassed.
"Hiya. Hey Maanvi. Shall we go?" Viren asked as he looked at Jeevika.
"Maanvi's not coming. She doesn't feel like it." Jeevika replied.
"Oh no. Well Virat's sitting in the car so I'll tell him to stay with you." Viren announced as Maanvi shook her head.
"No way! I don't wanna stay with him! I can tackle chors!" Maanvi moaned.
"Mannu, just let him stay. It's for your own safety. And anyways, mom and dad aren't at home either." Jeevika said as Virat entered the room.
"Bye Bhai and Jeevika. Have fun. Me and Maanvi will have the best time ever, won't we?" Virat said as he put his arm around her.
"Sure we will." Maanvi replied sarcastically.
Viren and Jeevika walked towards the car. He opened the door for her as she sat in. Once he has sat down, Jeevika turned to him. "Thank you for yesterday." she said.
"Yesterday?" Viren siad, confused.
"You saved me from explaining to Virat why Maanvi was behaving like that. It's just that I..." Jeevika explained but Viren interrupted.
"You don't need to explain to me, I understand everything." Viren said. He was about to put his hand on hers but took it back.
"Chale?" he questioned.
Jeevika nodded as they drove off to the cinema.
