Shakti sat in her car and started the engine. She glanced quickly at her watch. She had enough time in her hands.
She didn't know what would be the outcome of her actions today, but for once, she had decided to listen to her heart and not her mind.
I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely barging in
On a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marrying the wrong girl
She remembered the day she had read it in the newspapers. She had cried the entire day and felt like a total loser for her actions. It was as if an integral part of her heart had been snatched away. she'd felt her mind spinning and when she stood up to walk, she couldn't walk, as if her spine had broken down. She'd cursed herself ever since that day. As she pulled up outside the church, she gulped hard. this was not going to be easy..certainly not easy as she'd imagined it would be.
I sneak in and see your friends
And her snotty little family
All dressed in pastel
And she is yelling at a bridesmaid
Somewhere back inside a room
Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry
She looked at their friends...wait...they were no longer her friends...after what she'd done to him, they'd told her that she was wrong but she'd in return snapped at them to. and whenever she felt like apologizing, her ego stopped her from doing so... "why should i...couldn't they understand me?" she always said those words to herself and gave up on the idea of apologizing.
This is
Surely not what you thought it would be
I lose myself in a daydream
Where I stand and say
Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Of course only she knew how it had to be. he had always had this dream of having a perfect life, a perfect love story, a perfect traditional wedding, a perfect partner, all the while referring to her while she had shown him the APPARENT reality the hard way, breaking him and his thousand dreams all at the same time...
Fond gestures are exchanged
And the organ starts to play
A song that sounds like a death march
And I am hiding in the curtains
It seems that I was uninvited
By your lovely bride-to-be
She had expected that. why would she be invited anyway? it was all her own fault. more than doing whatever she did to him, it was him...he had been in love with her and somewhere everyone knew it was just a compromise on his part to keep the other girl happy. if only she had told him that she loved him, things would have been different...
She floats down the aisle
Like a pageant queen.
But I know you wish it was me
You wish it was me (Don't cha?)
Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Didn't he always give her those subtle hints that it was always supposed to be them? hell, the world had given her hints it was supposed to be them...their fans...families...friends. what a fool she'd been! She realized she could have told him the truth. He would have understood. after all it was Kunwar amarjeet singh..her best friend...he understood her unspoken words...then why not this time? was it coz of the way she said it or was it coz he was tired of waiting? no, that couldn't be the case, he would wait for her forever...
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out
And they said "speak now"
Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
Your time is running out
And they said, "speak now"
Oh Oh Oh! ( said speak now... )
She could hear her own words ringing in her ears. she closed her eyes to relive every moment of the last day they'd spent together. A day before she left for the USA, he'd come to meet her. they had the most fun filled and memorable day until she spoilt it. Post dinner, as they walked along the silent road, he'd said those beautiful words... "I'm an love with you, shakti". the next moment, he was on his one knee with a huge diamond ring in his hand. she wanted to jump and say yes, but she didn't know why she looked away. he quickly got up "i am sorry..i thought you love me too" he said fumbling for words, clearly embarrassed. "why?" her question startled him. "because i thought so..." he replied, freaking out with every passing second. "did i ever tell you i do?" she asked firmly to which he just looked down and shook his head, the ring clutched tightly into his fist, as a lone tear escaped his eyes showing how hurt he was.
I hear the preacher say
"Speak now or forever hold your peace"
She had to tell him that she was afraid a long distance relationship wouldn't work out and then when she would return, things would have gone so terribly wrong by then that they would have probably started hating each other, and that would be it. instead she was surprised when a small chuckle came out of her mouth. he looked at her, startled. "you left the girl who loved you for me, without even knowing whether i..and now i am leaving you..." she was choking on her words. "i didn't leave her...we were never together...its always been you" his lips were trembling with every word he said, hoping he could convince her. but she shook her head and walked away... "no kunwar, we can never be together...i don't love you..i never will...". she heard his sobs as she walked away but she didn't stop to turn. as she was turning around the corner, she took a quick glance at him..he was sitting down on his knees, his hands on his head. she could still see the ring sparkling in his hand. she wanted to hug him, but she walked away...i cannot keep you waiting for me kunwar, i am sorry...you deserve better than me, she thought.
There's the silence, there's my last chance
I stand up with shaking hands
All eyes on me
Horrified looks from
Everyone in the room
But I'm only looking at you.
He looked at her with shock. what was she doing here now? after ruining his life, did she want to ruin this as well? she walked a little down the aisle. all their friends got up and stood next to her to stop her from saying anything then. she looked at them with pleading eyes, and her tears told them she really had to do this. she finally mustered courage to sing out the following lines
I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely barging in
On a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marrying the wrong girl!
She glanced at him and Charlie, his to-be-bride again and again...he had gone pale in face, while shakti's face was red from crying. she went down on her knees and sobbed harder, as everything that had happened kept playing back in her mind. she choked on her words again but this time, he understood her silence...he understood why she'd done this. but he was unable to react. she finally sang again...
( Ha! )
So don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out
And they said, "speak now!"
She looked at him, still sitting on her knees, her hands folded, as if pleading him while he stood there, frozen. his mind went numb. he didn't realize when tears had escaped his eyes. he looked over at at charlie who was standing next to him. he couldn't do this, even though he wanted to, for charlie's sake. his heart was tearing away again...just when he was about to look away, charlie held his hand. he looked back at her confused. she smiled through her tears and nodded, encouraging him to go on, if that's what made him happy...
And you say
Let's run away now
I'll meet you when I'm out
Of my tux at the back door
Baby, I didn't say my vows
So glad you were around when they said
Speak Now
She shuddered when he bent down next to her and touched her shoulders to lift her. she kept looking away, but he kept his finger under her chin and made her look up. he slowly cupped her face. as she looked at him, she hated herself more. she wiped his tears and he finally smiled, that smile she'd always loved seeing on his face. their gang had surrounded them by now, including charile. she thanked her through her eyes and charlie just blinked indicating its ok. when she looked back at him, she lost herself in his eyes... "i hope its not too late to apologize"...she fidgeted with his tux... "i love you..." she said finally, sending him on seventh heaven. he pulled her into a rib crashing hug and whispered the words "i love you too" in her hears... the gang cheered them on as they wiped off their tears, smiling at each other.👏
