Dulhan... arrives on Zee

Zee's Dulhan Banoo Mein Teri and STAR Plus' Karam Apnaa Apnaa seem to have one thing in common. The protagonists of both the shows dream of getting married and leading a happy life only to find that destiny has something else in store for them. Like Karam..'s Gauri, Vidya of Dulhan ...'is a small-town girl. An illiterate, she has a fairy tale wedding but realizes that her dream has been shattered! She works against all odds, bears the wrath of her in-laws only to find that she gets rejected by Aditya, her husband as she is an anpad. Dulhan ... is the journey of Vidya to fight her destiny ... to make her life and to get back her husband's love. The story begins with the meek, submissive Vidya who finds herself totally helpless when she encounters hostility from her three sisters-in-law, chiefly Naina along with her husband Aniket. No one in the household seems to want her there and the one who wants her there, which is Gayatri (Aditya's mother) is too weak to stand up for her. Vidya who has never stepped out of her little village, has no confidence in her own abilities, has only seen denial in her life is now faced with the prospect of having to survive in her own home! It is the promise she made to Aditya's dying father that makes her stay back and endure everything. In spite of her gentle, unsure manner, Vidya manages to bring about changes within the Thakur household. Vidya becomes the sole support system for Gayatri and even tries to bridge the distance between Aditya and his mother (which has been created by Naina in the first place). Divyanka Tripathi is playing the lead role of Vidya. Produced by Shakuntalam Productions and directed by Partho Mitra, the serial also has in its cast Sharad Malhotra, Surinder Kaur, Rajendra Malhotra and Kamya Punjabi. It will start airing on August 14, Monday-Friday at 8 pm

"I hold a gold medal in rifle shooting"

This small town girl from Bhopal nurtured the dream of carving a niche for herself, and she proved to be the chosen one amongst the millions. We are talking about the beautiful and talented, Divyanka Tripathi, the protagonist of Zee's new show Banoo Mein Teri Dulhan. A former model, anchor, adventure sports freak; the phrase 'been there, done that' is apt for her persona.

In an exclusive interview with Sameera Kapoor, Divyanka talks about her journey from being girl-next door in Bhopal to being the brand new face of Zee.

"All these fame seems to be fantastic."

What does this new found fame mean to you?
It's yet to sink in. I have been so caught up with the shoot that I have hardly found time to sit back and enjoy the events unfolding around me. Certainly there is a funny sense of happiness churning in my mind and all of it seems to be fantastic.

What has been your family's reaction?
They are very proud and happy. In fact my mom would always tell me that you are a star in the making! My parents have been my motivators.

What is so different about your show, Banoo Mein ...?
It's the manner in which the subject is tackled. The story is about a small town girl and her trials and tribulations. The suspense weaved in before and after the marriage, which is another factor that will hook the audience.

The hoarding shows you wearing Mehendi and bangles in one hand while the other hand is plain, why?
See, the story deals with the emptiness in the life of the protagonist. It is an attempt to symbolise that emptiness and sense incompleteness which Vidya is going through. While what is the cause behind her sense of incompleteness you will have to wait and watch the show. (Smiles)

How did you bag this lead role?
I had acted in a telefilm titled Saathi Re aired on Sahara One. My co-star in that show suggested my name to the production house (Shakuntala Films). They approached me for the auditions, and rest is there for you to see.

"The story deals with the emptiness in the life of the protagonist..."

Any homework for the role?
Yes, all of us were enrolled for a 10 day workshop. Though it was a short term afair, it helped us in polishing our act.

Are you ready for bold scenes, going by the trend many channels have been resorting to?
Well, personally I am not comfortable with scenes that involve exposure. That is one reason which kept me away from trying in Bollywood. As of now I am not open to any such scenes. And it's my good luck that Banoo Mein...does not have any such requirement, for it's the story that revolves around a young bride's dilemma. There is no scope for a bold angle in the story.

The TV industry is buzzing with action and there's cut throat competition. Are you ready to cope up with monotonous and tiring shooting schedules?
On the contrary I think that all this has made me more disciplined and principled which is very essential to thrive in this industry. I have had a taste of adventure before, which has tested my ability to survive challenges. So it will will help me in this feild. I am sure I will enjoy acting.

What your age? You look very young
I am 21, and have recently graduated in Arts.

Do you, at any point feel that you will lose out on all the girlie fun one has at this age?
There comes a phase in on'es life when we grow up and become responsibile. For me, this is the time. I should be proud of this opportunity. Besides, it's not like that I have not enjoyed my life for the past 20 years. I have leaded very active life. I have experimented with everything. So there are no regrets of not being able to do certain things. In fact by being an actor I am actually aiming for a whole new horizon, which in itself is enterprising.

"I was into lot of adventure sports"

What is the real Divyanka like?
Pretty much like Vidya (her character in the show). Since I was involved in a lot of physical activities, it lead to the misconception that I am very tomboyish. But back in Bhopal I have always been this demure and simple, salwar kameez clad girl.

Did you always aspire to be an actor?
No, in fact I wanted to be an army officer. Back in Bhopal, I was the Captain of NCC. I have also participated in the Republic Day Camp where only the best of the cadets are sent. Over there I was the bestowed with the 'Best Cadet' title.

So, prior to acting, what kept you busy?
I was into lot of adventure sports. I have done a course of mountaineering from Uttarkashi Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. I hold a gold medal in rifle shooting. I am also the executive officer of the rifle academy in Bhopal. I have also learnt water ski, but it's ironic that I do not know to swim! That is the one thing which I would like to learn (smiles).

Continue...
In addition to all these activities I have also done lot of modelling. I was a participant of a Zee show, India's Best, and I was crowned 'Miss Beautiful Skin'. Ifor Zee Teen Queen. I have worked as an anchor in Akashwani Bhopal and have done a couple of telefilms for Doordarshan.

You use lot of 'aap' and 'hum' while conversing in Hindi. Are you promoting your serial?
No, this is the way I speak even in my real life. But after coming here it has become 'tum'. Perhaps my dialect was also a reason that the production house cast me. As I said earlier, I am very much like Vidya

Cinderella ki shaadi

It has the perfect ingredients of a daily soap — a village girl, brought up by her cruel aunt and uncle, dreams about her prince charming and gets married to a rich and handsome businessman but only for the story to take a twist!

'Banoo Main Teri Dulhann' (Zee) which will replace 'Tumhari Disha' from August 14 at the 8 pm slot promises to be a show with a difference. Incidentally, the debuting pair, Divyanka Tripathi (Vidya) and Sharad Malhotra (Sagar), is a 'Zee Cinestar Ki Khoj' discovery.

Divyanka is from Bhopal and has done telefilms for Doordarshan. Having an uncanny resemblance to actor Gauri Pradhan, the debutante says, "I am extremely traditional and shy. I am glad to have been given this opportunity. After 'Zee Cinestar…' I did not think of Bollywood because I am not comfortable with the glamour attached to it."

However, for Sharad Malhotra (Sagar) television was a natural progression. "After participating in 'Zee Cinestar…' I came to Mumbai from Kolkata and have done several commercials for the last four years," he says.

Both the stars agree that television is a much safer industry. "The risk factor is much less compared to Bollywood. If you don't click, you disappear," says Sharad. Divyanka is quick to add, "The visibility is also very high in television. People see you every single day."

Sharad is also unperturbed by the fact that most soaps these days have only women protagonists. "I don't think it matters. In 'Banoo…' there will be several twists and turns and the focus will be equally divided," he says.

It's different!

Haven't we heard that one before?

After dragging on for a long time, the tepid show Tumhari Disha will be replaced by a new serial called Dulhan Banoo Main Teri from August 14 onwards. Dulhan… is a story about protagonist Vidya's life in Benares and how it changes after she moves to Delhi after her marriage. "Her life will take an interesting turn after marriage," says producer Nilima Bajpai who had earlier produced Reth for the same channel.

Doesn't Sony's Vaidehi have the same storyline? Bajpai stresses, "The plot, the scheme of the situation is different and the audiences will realise it once they see the serial." Hey, haven't we heard that before?

Meanwhile protagonists Divyanka Tripathi and Sharad Malhotra, both contestants of Zee's Cinestar's Ki Khoj are excited about the show. Divyanka says, "I am quite prepared for a hectic life ahead. But I am sure I am going to enjoy it."

Non-stop Divyanka

Newcomer Divyanka, who features in the title role of the Zee daily Dulhann, has already had a taste of erratic shooting hours. Dulhann was launched on August 14 and the title track was not ready till August 9, due to which the actress had to shoot for 15 hours non-stop. She has already started working hard, so don't be surprised to hear one more case of a swooning actress.
Earlier, the show was to be titled Banoo Main Teri Dulhan. But the channel decided to change the name according to the dictates of numerology and added a double 'n'.

Banoo Main Teri Dulhan Zee TV has been having a dream run in the 9-10 pm slot for the past few months, maintaining a leadership position in the slot. Now, the channel is shifting focus to the 8-9 pm slot. Punit Goenka, Business Head of the channel, said, "We are leading in the 9-10 pm a lot and we believe that with the right programming, we can harness this audience 8 pm onwards and consolidate our position." One of the first attempts in this direction is the launch of the new show, 'Banoo Main Teri.. Dulhan', which premieres on Zee TV on August 14, 2006 in the 8 pm slot. The show has been pitted against Rajshri Production's 'Pyaar Ke Do Naam.. Ek Radha Ek Shyam' on STAR Plus and Balaji's 'Kaisa Ye Pyaar Hai' on Sony. Goenka said, "This is a strong show and from our point of view, would convert as a strong lead in for the 8.30 pm slot." 'Banoo Main Teri.. Dulhan' comes in place of 'Tumhaari Disha', which would be wrapped after two years. Speaking on why 'Tumhaari Disha' couldn't turn into a successful proposition, Ashvini Yardi, the channel's Programming Head, said, "'Tumhaari Disha' has done well for us, but at the time when the show was at it peak, Zee TV as a channel didn't have the kind of numbers that we have today. Many missed on the story and so we were looking for a new show in this slot." But why 'Banoo Main Teri.. Dulhan'? To this, Yardi replied, "We are still speaking to a family audience dominated by the female TG when we look at the 8 pm slot. 'Banoo Main Teri.. Dulhan' would be a perfect show for such an audience in this slot." Though Yardi was tight-lipped about the 8.30 pm slot, it is learnt that Zee is looking for a new initiative in that slot as well, which is expected to be launched soon. Is 'Jab Love Hua' going to be wrapped up? Channel officials divulged that a decision on that hadn't been taken as yet, but in all likelihood that would be the case. Commenting on the channel's marketing plans, Tarun Mehra, Marketing Head of Zee TV, informed that the channel would be treating the show with a 360-degree approach. In addition to the Zee Network, the channel will also use outdoor, radio and print for promoting the new show. At a time when Zee is in the midst of launching multiple shows, Goenka believes that the brand awareness created by Zee Business has also come in handy. It may be noted that in terms of numbers, the show didn't have much to offer. Giving the channel's perspective here, Goenka said, "Business isn't a mass subject, it is very niche and we never looked at the show for numbers."

He explained that the objective of the show was to create awareness in the right circles and that he believed that the channel had managed to do that. "In fact, we are contemplating on the next season for the show," Goenka said.

INTERVIEW
Of Marital Woes

Every young girl dreams of a good marriage, husband and in-laws. But sometimes these dreams turn into a nightmare and heartbreak. It happens too with Vidya whose world turns around after she marries Sagar. She not only has to face the wrath of her in-laws, but also her husband; she has to win her husband over. Screen spoke to the lead players Divyanka Tripathi and Sharad Malhotra of Zee TV's Banoo Main Teri Dulhan
DIVYANKA TRIPATHI
What is Banoo Main Teri Dulhan all about?
(Smiles) Primarily, it is the story of an illiterate village girl Vidya, who after a fairy tale marriage faces the taunts of her in-laws, her husband too belittles her for her background and education.
Why her background?
Being poor is a curse. Besides coming from a poor background, Vidya is constantly cursed, taunted and sometimes beaten by her chacha and chachi. Since walls also have ears, the entire neighbourhood knows about Vidya's woes.
What actually happens after marriage?
Having dreamt of a happy marital life, Vidya realises her dreams have been shattered after she marries Sagar. With grit and determination Vidya works against all odds and bears the wrath of her in-laws only to find that she gets rejected by her husband as she is illiterate and that she does not fit in with him. But with firm determination, Vidya is able to finally win over her husband's love and affection.
And how does it happen?
(grins) I will not disclose what happens. That's for you to see and experience.
Have you acted in any serial before?
Since I hail from the holy city of Benaras, I wasn't exposed to acting on TV. I am absolutely new to the serial genre. Yes, before this I have done a lot of plays for both All India Radio, Bhopal and Doordarshan. Besides, Sharad and I competed in and won the Zee Cine Star Ki Khoj.
Why didn't you join films?
Well that was not to be. Now that I am working in Zee TV's prestigious serial, I hope my career will take a turn for the better.
Who would you give credit to for Banoo Main Teri Dulhan?
I want to thank the people at Zee TV for reposing their trust in me even after knowing that I had no solid background to talk about.
SHARAD MALHOTRA
Vidya comes from a poor background. What about Sagar?
Well, Sagar is a Thakur. He is well educated, stylish, full of attitude and very arrogant. In one word he is a perfectionist. Right from food, to his dressing etc. Sagar wants everything perfect.
How does Sagar meet Vidya?
I will not disclose that, but I can only say that Vidya makes a commitment to my father (Raghavendra Pratap Singh) and she does everything to keep it. Then there is a major turn in my character. Viewers are bound to get a shock (between episode 1-11). This will bring a dramatic change in the serial.
You hail from Kolkata. What were you doing there?
I did my B. Com. from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata. In 2001, I was chosen as the Face of the Year-Kolkata. Then I attended a couple of acting workshops with Sarat Mukherjee and Nishi Arora (Kalawati Academy). In 2004, I won the Zee Cine Star Ki Khoj along with Divyanka and know her since then. After that I came to Mumbai and since then my work is being managed by Israni Communications (Raj and Amita Israni). With their help I gave several auditions including the one for this serial. I appeared for three auditions and later had to go for a 'Look Test'.Only then I was confirmed for the role three months ago.
What was your instant reaction once you were chosen?
Let's take it this way. Nowadays TV channels focus more serials on women. When I heard about my selection in ...Dulhan, I thought it would be woman-oriented, but after I read the script I felt happy. I saw it as a chance to prove my histrionics.
How many episodes have you shot so far and how long will the show continue?
We have already completed eight episodes and are working around 14 hours in two units. As far as I know we have been allowed to air for a period of two years. If the show fares well we may be given an extension.
So far what has been your experience working in Mumbai?
Two things. First, it has been raining daily since we started shooting. I feel rain has proved lucky for me. The next incident was a scary one. We were shooting on the Ganga in Benaras. We had two boats-one that carried me and the other had the crew on it.It was raining cats and dogs and it was just the right atmosphere we needed for the shot. But then suddenly my boat tilted and I fell into the water.I was shocked when I felt the under current dragging me away. Later when the panicky crew saved me from the mishap, it was found that I was dragged as far as some metres away. I shall never, in my life, forget this incident.
Where did you shoot in Benaras?
Among the eighty two ghats in Benaras, we shot at Rajghat-the best ghat in the holy city. Then we shot at the Ramnagar Palace. We were lucky to have had an audience with the Maharaja of Benaras then.

You were a model before you came to Mumbai?
Yes, I did a lot of ads prominent among them being ads for P.C.Chandra (was the first male model to have done a jewellery campaign). Then I did ads for National Insurance, Life Insurance Corporation, Peerless Insurance. The latest advertisement of mine that is being aired on TV is the one I did for EXIDE Batteries.
