"What do you mean, you don't love me anymore?" Viren cried, staring at Jeevika's stoic face.

"What I mean is, you humiliated my sister in front of two thousand people and I'm not going to let it go down so easily," she said evenly, clutching at her Literature textbooks.

"It wasn't my fault!" he protested weakly. "My brother Virat-he had me tied down"

"Viren, I don't have time for your explanations," she said, skipping down the steps of the school where she taught. This was the place where they had most of their romantic trysts-after all, who could suspect two lovers of hiding in a school-and now they having their very first and biggest argument.

"Women," he thought, shaking his head. Virat was right. It's no use loving them. And yet…he sighed. Jeevika wasn't just any woman. She had saved him, saved him from the darkness that had been plaguing him for most of his life. The nightmares, the headaches-all the girls he'd dated had run away from him and called him a 'weirdo' or a 'freak'. She had simply soothed him with the help of a damp cloth and never forgot to make him take his pills. If she goes away, I'll be a freak again, he thought terrified.

"Jeevika please," he said, "I swear, I'll make it up to Maanvi somehow."

"No," she said, turning around and staring at him with absolute malice, an emotion that was alien to her sweet face. "You'd better stay away from our family. I'm surprised yours hasn't killed you yet."

He hung his head down shamefully. Truth was, the Vadheras hadn't even cared. Dadaji had nearly killed him, then calmed down when his Soumini Bua had reminded that Viren must have probably had another 'attack'. That was all it took for his family's simmering temper to die down, and instead of anger, he saw pity in their eyes. He hated it, every single moment of it. They'd made him feel like an animal, a sweet puppy who had mistakenly ended up watering in the bushes, and how innocent and unaware of his actions he was. For a moment, he'd felt like killing them all.

Then he'd thought of Jeevika, sweet Jeevika, the only person who had ever treated him like a human being, not someone to be ridiculed or pitied. He didn't know why he'd blown so much therapy when Jeevika was the only treatment he'd needed. He'd instantly drove to the school, to tell her the good news, that he was finally free to take the woman he really wanted. Instead, he'd been informed in crisp tones that, "This is our last meeting."

"Jeevika, don't go," he whispered, but she'd already hailed a taxi. He felt a sudden chill go through his body, and the world around him was spinning. The world was suddenly a big, vibrant mix of colors, and he was floating above everybody, the worried people exclaiming, "Look, he's having a heart attack!", the school, the sky, Jeevika's taxi. He could hear laughter in his ears, his own laughter, and the more he chortled, the more he felt like something was trying to claw its way out of his chest. He wanted to run, no, he wanted to fly. Everything was so dreamy…

"Viren!" Jeevika was shreiking, tugging at his body. "Viren, come to your senses! Oh my god, didn't you take your medicines today?"

"Jeevika," he mumbled, "I love you 'kay?" and then he passed out.

--------------------------------------

The phone rang once, then twice. Virat ignored both calls. He was too busy acquainting himself with his wife's hips. It was only when Maanvi said that the constant noise was getting irritating that he picked up the phone, ready to fire whoever it was on the phone.

Maanvi looked up, and was surprised to see all the color draining out of her husband's face. She'd never thought she'd see Virat Vadhera frightened, but heck, this was a spectacle to behold. Surprisingly, instead of thanking whoever it was who had caused his state, she felt like hugging him. She didn't have to do either.

"We have to go back," he said firmly. She nodded her head. She was growing bored in the Maldives. Making love to Virat was fun, but it wasn't what she had originally planned. Despite the understanding they had reached on their first day, Maanvi was adamant on teaching all the people in her life a lesson. She would do something that would make her father's spirit proud of her.

"It's Viren," he explained, pulling on his trousers, and Maanvi blanched. Fortunately, Virat didn't notice. They had reached an agreement that on returning back to India, Maanvi would agree to forgive Viren. She didn't really intend to do it, but for now, she planned on doing whatever it was the Vadheras intended to make her do.

"What happened to him?" she asked casually, trying to be neither too concerned, nor too indifferent.

Virat bit his lip, as if deciding whether to tell Maanvi or not. Finally he said, "He's very depressed, the poor guy. He feels quite guilty for deserting you at your wedding you know."

I give a damn about his guilt, she thought, but she nodded her head. "It's okay," she said, looking resigned. "What's done is done. It's no use changing it."

Virat gave her a bright smile. "You know Chaudhary, you're not as irritating as you seem." She ignored that comment and began to dress.

-------------------------------------------------

Virat whistled as he made arrangements to book an afternoon flight to India. Cellphones make travel much more easier, he thought contendedly. Of course, they make other things easier too.

"Hello?" a gruff voice said at the end of the line. He chuckled, thinking it was probably Khurana's nap time back in the country. "We're returning by today night," he said gaily. "Be ready at the airport."

"'Kay Boss. And please message the next time," the voice said sharply, before cutting the call. Virat frowned at the phone, then laughed. He liked people who obeyed him, but he liked people who knew how to give a healthy dose of sarcasm too.

Khurana's the best, he thought fondly. He'd been just another illegal immigrant struggling to make a living back in London, where they'd met. With Virat's help, he had returned back to the sarson fields of Punjab, and was really making a good life. After this assignment, I'll gift him a car. What say, Ms. Human Resources, wouldn't that boost the employee morale? He thought with a smirk, gazing at Maanvi, who was innocently packing her own luggage.

I hope you enjoyed your honeymoon Mrs. Vadhera. Because nobody attacks Virat Vadhera and gets away with it. The moment you step in Mumbai-you are dead.
