raksha bandhan Scraps

Wishing every sister & brother of DKDM forum a Very Happy Raksha-bandhan. Hope all the sisters gets good gifts from their generous brothers.😆

DKDM too has an owesome pair of brother-sister, our own Vishnuji & Parvati.

There is areference in DP about Parvati promising Vishnuji that he will be her brother in one of his Avatars.

There are many stories about how this tradition started.

1)Yama & Yamuna

According to a legend, Raksha Bandhan was a ritual followed by Lord Yama(the Lord of Death) and his sister Yamuna, (the river in northern India). Yamuna tied rakhi to Yama and bestowed immortality. Yama was so moved by the serenity of the occasion that he declared that whoever gets a rakhi tied from his sister and promised her protection, will become immortal.

2)The Bhavishya Puran, cites a story that the devas, once battled with the danavas (demons) for twelve years. Devas were defeated in the battle. Indra (King of devas) prepared to fight again. On this occasion, Indrani tied a raksha on her consort Indra to protect him in battle and wishing a victory. Indra won the battle.

3) King Bali & Lakshmi

Demon King Bali's devotion won over Lord Narayan (Vishnu), who granted his wish and left his heavenly abode to stay in Bali's kingdom. Missing her husband, Narayan's consort Lakshmi arrived in King Bali's kingdom on Shravan Purnima. She accepted Bali as her brother by tying a raksha on him. In return, Bali asked her to wish for a boon. She requested Narayan's return. Since Bali offered devotion by sacrificing everything to the Lord, the day is also known as 'Bali-eva' or 'Baleva' for short.

4)Krishna & Darupadi

Another incident from the epic Mahabharat concerns Krishan and Darupadi, the wife of the Pandavas. She had once torn a strip of silk off her sari and tied it around Krishna's wrist to staunch the bleeding from a battlefield wound. Krishna was touched by her action and declared her to be his sister, even though they were unrelated. He promised to repay the debt and then spent the next 25 years doing just that. Draupadi, in spite of being married to five great warriors and being a daughter of a powerful monarch, trusted and depended wholly on Krishna. Krishna repaid the debt of love during the "Cheer-Haran" of Draupadi, which occurred in the assembly of King Dhritrashtra when Yudhishthira lost her to the Kauravas in gambling. At that time, Krishna indefinitely extended her saree through divine intervention, so it could not be removed, to save her honor. This is how he honored his rakhi vow towards Draupadi.

Raksha Bandhan is also commonly known known Balev. It is the day on which Brahmins change their sacred thread, while changing their sacred thread, they rededicate themselves to study the vedas and persue spiritual upliftment. This day is also celebrated as Nariyeli Purnima, in the coastal areas of the many States, where people worship the sea offering coconuts.
