Best Friends Reunited
Chapter 1
"Chotte, guess what?!" Anjali excitedly asked him as he seated at the table for breakfast.
"What di?" he said in a bored voice reaching out for the nuts to put in his oatmeal.
Disappointed that he didn't show any interest, Anjali tried again "guess who is coming?!"
Arnav paused his bite and looked up at his di sitting across him, her face glowing with excitement.
Giving her a break he gave her his attention "Nk?"
"Nope"
"Bubbly?"
"Chotte I know you don't care when your cousins come over so why would I ask you to guess them" she said with impatience.
"I don't know di, I give up just tell me"
"My brother your..."
"Arrey Anjali bitya nahi boliye inko ke kaun arehai hai" naniji came and joined them.
Anjali gave her nani a look and figured what she was hinting at.
Grinning widely "aaj tum ghar jaldi ajana chotte" she got up.
"I have to go check what we need from the groceries" she walked away.
"Nani -" Arnav tried to make up an excuse to be not home early.
"Hum sub shaam ka khana saath mein kainge" she cut him off.
Not bothering to argue with her now, Arnav said his goodbyes and left for work.
Naniji quickly finished of her meal and hurried off to find Anjali.
~~~
The three Raizada women sat together late afternoon chatting non stop.
"Nani, chotte ko woh yaad bhi hungi yah nahi?" Anjali asked with a worried face while pouring tea for everyone.
"Saasuma hum ko to lagta hai Arnav bitwa ke memory mein se woh kab ki hi erase hogaye" mamiji piped in.
"Mamijiii" Anjali whined.
Chuckling nani replied, "nahi pata Anjali bitya, magar yeh hum kehsakte hai ke jab woh dekinge unhe to yaad ajaingi."
That instantly brightened up Anjalis's mood.
"Ache shaam ke liye cholay puri banane ke liye kehdiya hai na Hari Prakashji ko?" nani asked sipping on her tea.
"Han aur saath mein jalebiyan bhi" mamiji smiled fondly.
"Yes nani everything is ready. Humne yahan neeche room bhi set karwadiya hai. Bus ab shaam hona hai aura woh doh ko ghar ana hai!" Anjali clapped her hands.
"Anjali bitya,damaadji ko boldiya na ghar jaldi ane keliye?" mamiji dipped a Parley G biscuit in her tea.
"Ji mamiji, woh actually abhi thori der atayhi honge" she started texting her husband about his whereabouts.
"Arrey hum to bhulhi gaye Savita ne apne bete Raj ki shaadi ka invitation bheja that aaj" mamiji went to find the card.
"Abhi kuch thore din mein hai shayad, aj subhe unse baath hoe thi" nani took the card from her daughter in law, reading with interest.
"Nani apne kahan na unse humare paas guests rahinge" Anjali made sure.
"Ji kehdiye aur unho ne kaha koi takaluf nahi karre laane mein saath shaadi ko."
The doorbell rang, making Anjali jump on her feet and run to open the door.
"Yeh agaye"
Shyam walked in with his arm draped around Anjali's shoulders, smiling down at her affectionately.
"Namaste nanji, namaste mamiji" he greeted the elders.
"Namaste damaadji" came the simultaneous replies.
"Apke liye khana lagwa doon?" asked Anjali
"Nahi, hume aaj shaam ko khana hai khoob, abhi nahi. I'll go take short nap" he informed everyone and left.
"Hum phone pe chotte se baath karke atay hai" Anjali followed her husband.
"Yeh chotte se baath karke aur bohat kuch karke ati hai" mamiji laughed.
"Manoroma!" naniji's eyes widened at what her bahu meant.
~~~
The entire day Arnav was as usual busy with meetings, meetings and more meetings.
For him it was a prefect normal day. He loved working, enjoyed every bit of it and never got tired.
It was all fine until di called to make sure he would be home in time.
"Kaun to bhi araha hai aura mujhse Kya lena dena hai" he muttered frustrated.
It was most probably mamiji's relatives.
Oh God please don't let it be masala mama, he will drive me crazy with his short term memory and non stop talk with mamiji.
He had two more designs to go over and finalize them before he could call it a day.
Arnav thought over what his di had said, how he doesn't get excited over seeing his cousins.
He did get happy to see them, it was just that they came so often, he didn't look forward to them anymore.
He shook his head at how his family thought he was a hardened person now because of having to go through a rough life.
They didn't realize he was naturally like that because he matured at a very early age.
He had big responsibilities at a young age of 13, after parents died. Life was moving on, he had to survive and take care of his di.
Arnav plainly didn't know how to have fun and so always appeared so grim and angry.
He was quite fine with that personality though, it always worked in his favor. He grinned thinking how he gets his work done everywhere in less than a minute, cause people are scared he would lose his temper...which he does. Yes he was a little short tempered.
Arnav packed his bag, checked his mail one more time, knowing he wouldn't get a chance tonight as 'somebody' was coming over for dinner and nani or di wouldn't let him cut the socializing short.
He smiled to himself remembering di's excitement at breakfast and that ignited a spark of curiosity in him.
"Who was coming?" he laughed.
~~~
Everyone at home were nicely dressed waiting for the 'guess who' to arrive.
Arnav rolled his eyes and continued to browse through the news online, laughing inside at the lameness.
He was reading through the headlines when he saw from the corner of his eyes, his di and a young woman giggling loudly come out from the kitchen.
Not sure what he saw, he shut the laptop screen putting it on the table and turned his face to take a better look.
"What the!"
No it was not her. It could not be her. There was no way in hell that girl was her.
He stared at her, waiting for her to disappear and confirm it wasnt her standing across him behind the sofa looking at him expectantly.
"Arnav!" she yelled happily.
"K-khu...no its not you...Khushi?!"
Arnav Singh Raizada was beyond shocked.
