Ghulam Ali (1940-) is a famous Pakistani ghazal singer.
Ghulam Ali was born in the village of Kaleke, Sialkot, Pakistan in 1940 (that time India). He belonged to a musical family, his father was a vocalist and sarangi player who gave him early training. At the age of 15, Ghulam Ali became a disciple of the legendary classical singer Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who was a master of the Patiala Gharana to which Ghulam Ali also belongs. His training was provided mainly by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's three brothers: Barqat Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan, and Amanat Ali Khan, in Lahore. All these great teachers of classical music taught him the finer details of classical music and his solid foundation of classical music included studying Thumri and learning to sing raagas. He started singing for Radio Lahore in 1960. Ghulam Ali's father named him "Ghulam Ali" after Bade Ghulam Ali.
Along with singing ghazals, Ghulam Ali composes music for his ghazals too. His compositions are raaga-based and sometimes include a scientific mixture of raagas. A raaga is a scientific, precise, subtle and aesthetic melodic form with its own peculiar ascending and descending movement consisting of either a full seven note octave, or a series of six or five notes (or a combination of any of these) in a rising or falling structure called the Arohana and Avarohana. He is known for blending gharana-gaayaki into ghazal and this gives his singing the capability to touch hearts. He beautifully sings Punjabi geets too. Most of his punjabi geets have been extremely popular. Though from Pakistan, Ghulam Ali remains as popular in India as in Pakistan. On being questioned about Pakistani pop groups, Ghulam Ali replied, "frankly I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics."
The words "Ghazal" and "Ghulam Ali" have become one sound.

GHULAM ALI
"Visaal, means coming together. We chose this name because it signifies not only the coming together of two personalities, but is the union of two minds, two souls, two cultures and more importantly of two great nations." - Ghulam Ali
-Says Ghulam Ali In An Exclusive Interview
with
Sanjeeb Mukherjee
Recently in Delhi for
the release of his latest album Visaal (Coming Together) penned by another maestro Gulzar, the singer spoke at length about his love for Urdu poetry, the cultural bonding that artists like him have managed to create between two estranged nations and also on his latest album and how he roped in one the most sensitive poets India has ever produced…. Ghulam Ali, the singing sensation has enthralled audiences all over the world for almost four decades now.
How does it feel to have an appreciative audience like you had today?
GA:
Everywhere in the world I am heard with love and affection. But I personally enjoy singing in India. Though some people may not understand some of the chaste Urdu words but they know most of my popular ghazals verbatim. It's a great feeling. Singing for an Indian audience is a unique experience. They are true connoisseurs. As far as audience in England, America and Canada go, they have to be explained the meanings of certain words. What about your fans in Pakistan?
GA: As you know Urdu is our zabaan. So in Pakistan things are entirely different. No one has to make an effort to understand the words of my ghazals. There I believe people say that if you haven't heard Ghulam Ali you've heard nothing. I may sound pompous but the fact is that in Pakistan they only listen to me when they want to enjoy a good ghazal.
In these strained times how do you think an artiste like you can help better relationships between India and Pakistan?
GA
. Music transcends all geographical boundaries. I have admirers on both sides of the borders, for whom I am neither Hindustani nor Pakistani, but simply a singer. For me personally it is a great honour that through my songs I have managed to bring the people of both countries closer and I will continue to do so.Just like you there are many pop groups from Pakistan who have tremendous fan following on both sides of the border. Tell us something about the role that they are playing and also about there singing?
GA
. As far as fan following is considered it is good that pop groups too have been trying to cement ties between the two countries. But, frankly I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics.Do you feel ghazal is more superior to other forms of singing?
GA
. Ghazal requires lot of riyaz and training and a thorough knowledge of classical music. Nobody, wants to spend so much time nowadays, every one is after quick bucks.Which is your favourite forum?
GA
: There's no question about it. Singing on stage is a sublime experience because you get an instant reaction. When the audience appreciates you they reward you right there with their applause. Can there be anything more satisfying for a creative person? You've been singing for almost 40 years. Has there been any change in your style since then?
GA
: Yes it's been 40 years or say all the years of my adulthood. The difference is that my voice has matured and I have learnt a lot. I've sung in front of different audiences around the world and feel far more confident than I did in my early days. In short I feel that I have matured considerably. I've become more God-fearing and feel that my talent is God's grace. Now when I sing well I feel I am communing with God.As a great ghazal singer you follow the conventional style - you don't like to experiment much?
GA
: You see, experimenting with ghazal means experimenting with words and music. If you have been following my style, I keep innovating. For me ghazal is very serious matter, singing each ghazal is a new experiment. |

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan reminded us this week in Inner Voice that music is where the One God's voice may be heard. Indeed, music, according to the Hindus, is said to comprise all ashta seva or eight services to God that win us soul growth.
The Quran Sharief, as Pakistani ghazal king Ghulam Ali told me just last year, contains ragas like Bhairavi, Bhairon and Kalangra (the Arabic Bhairavi). And how may we sufficiently praise Guru Nanak Dev who invented a religion in which music is the form of worship?
To dive in a bit here, hear how he compares the cosmos to a puja thaal: Gagan mein thaal, rav-chand deepak, bane taarika mandal moti/Dhoop malyaanlo pavan chavro kare, sagal banraye phulat jyoti/Kaisi aarti hoye? (The sky is Your salver, the sun and moon Your lamps, the stars of the firmament Your pearls; All the earth's sandalwood is Your incense, the winds are Your whisks, the flowers of all creation are heaped before You — what shall I worship You with?)
The Church in the West has brilliant music with composer Johannes Bach famously declaring that the noblest music was that in praise of God while Mozart's High Mass compositions leave you stunned with their intense, almost unbearable beauty. (Write in to the Maestro Channel on World Space Radio with a request if you'd like to check it out.) However, my favourite western classical music story is about Handel's opera, Creation.
The composer, a deeply religious man, set the story of Creation to music as found in the first book of the Bible (Genesis), with shades of Milton's Paradise Lost. The work was premiered in Vienna in the April of 1798. When the chorus sang, "And God said, Let there be Light," such a divine blast of music ensued that the audience gasped in shock and awe - and collectively burst into tears. Storywise, it is considered a rather straightforward opera with not much action, but the composer is said to have valued it very much as a personal benchmark in evolution and inspiration.
From tears to rain is a natural step in this weather. (Remember Charlie Chaplin's remark that he liked to walk in the rain so nobody could see him crying?) The first thing that strikes us as rain music naturally, are the Malhar ragas, for we've grown up enchanted by tales of how Mian Tansen and Baiju Bawra caused the skies to pour with their singing.
And here's another beloved story from the Carnatic tradition. As many will know, there are three 18th century composers who are considered the Holy Trinity of Carnatic music: Thyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri. By a curious coincidence, all three overlapped in the temple town of Thirvaroor in Tamil Nadu. It was a lull in political history those days in South India under the enlightened patronage of the Nayak and Bhonsale kings, whereas the North was undergoing a turbulent time. In this calm, pleasant spring, many wonderful things happened in the spiritual and musical life of South India. Muthuswami Dikshitar composed mostly in Sanskrit (so it's surprising more Hindustani singers haven't picked up on him). His parents sent him off to Kashi with the yogi, Chidambaranatha, who became his spiritual master and is said to have gifted him the sweet and blessed vina that he was to excel in playing.
What's so interesting is that while rooted firmly in the 'Carnatic', Dikshitar had an open musical mind. As young men, he and his brother Baluswami in the company of their Mudaliar patrons, frequented Fort St George (Madras) where they heard European music played by the English military band. While Baluswami learnt the western violin and pioneered its use in Carnatic music, Dikshitar had fun composing Sanskrit lyrics for 37 western tunes.
The Dishitar rain story is about how he sang the raga Amritavarshini to invoke rain on the drought-stricken village of Sattur in Tamil Nadu. Amritavarshini is like the Hindustani raga Malashree and literally means 'shower of nectar'. Dikshitar hailed Devi as Ananda amrita karshini, amritavarshini. The story goes that when he sang Salilam varshaya varshaya (Let the rain pour), there was such a torrent from heaven that he had to plead, Sthambaya, sthambaya (stop, stop).
With such inspiring stories, and the history of the world is cached full of them, can we wonder that musicians beg us to stop fighting over externals that God is surely not so paltry as to bother with - and pay heed instead to the hidden Harmony?
