Trust New Yorkers to come up with catchy titles. Harry Potter author
J K Rowling made her first public appearance in the US after six years, joining writers
Stephen King (

John Irving for a charity reading at New York's Radio City Music Hall on Monday. 'An evening with Harry, Carrie & Garp' signified the boy wizard, King's famous novel
Carrie and referred to Irving's now-classic book
The World According To Garp. The other writers were far overshadowed by the reception given to Rowling, the author besieged by fans wanting to know more about the next Harry Potter novel.

The show was compered by
Whoopi Goldberg, but comedian
Jon Stewart, who hosted the
Oscars earlier this year, was the man chosen to introduce Rowling. Stewart believably said he was there because he has kids: a two-year-old son and a five-month-old daughter. 'My daughter's been in line for the new Harry Potter for the last three months,'
MTV.com quoted Stewart as saying. 'We miss her terribly, but I want that damn book.' Rowling, while forthcoming about most questions, refused to make any major revelations. She did confess, however, that finishing the book was a relief. 'I think some people will love it, and some people will loathe it. I'm well into writing it now. To an extent, the pressure's off, because this is the last book, so I feel quite liberated. It's fun in a way that it hasn't been before, because I'm finally doing my resolution.'
'There's still a lot to find out and expand on, and I will probably leave some loose ends, but there won't be a Book Eight. I've plotted (the series) out, and I'd run out of plot if I pushed it past there. Sorry."

Around 6,000 people showed up, and with most of them kids, King and Irving readily acknowledged Rowling as the star act, prompting her to laugh, 'That's like being told the Beatles and the Stones are opening up for you!' Will Harry die? Rowling wouldn't say. 'I don't always enjoy killing my characters,' she said. 'I didn't enjoy killing the character at the end of
Half Blood Prince, but I had been planning that for years, so I'd already done my grieving when it came time to write it.' Rowling did hint that Harry's archrival, Draco Malfoy, who was supposed to commit the murder but failed at the last moment, has a chance at redemption. 'Harry believes that Draco, even given unlimited time, would not have killed,' she said. 'But as for Draco's future, you'll have to wait and see.' Rowling hinted at more sparks between Harry and Hermione, and said she was amazed at the relationship wars and the 'gang warfare' between groups of fans recommending certain relationships. Very amused, the said she doesn't need any more feedback on 'weird couplings.'
She joked, Jane Austen probably got less feedback!'

The
Washington Post reported a fan, coming all the way from Shanghai asking, 'Can Muggles (non-magical humans, like the rest of us) brew potions if they follow the instructions exactly and they have all the ingredients?' It's a great credit to Rowling that she took a second to actually think before she seriously said no. She certainly admits she will miss the mad hysteria and the rush of writing about the wizard. 'On the one hand, I am going to feel sad. Harry's been an enormous part of my life and it's been a turbulent phase of my life and he was always the constant.'
'But,' she summed up, 'there will also be a sense of liberation because there are pressures involved in writing something as popular.'
