I am seriously confused.

When a person starts to drink for enjoyment... how the hell do they reach the stage that this(SMJ show's first addict) person did.

Thank goodness you aren't able to figure it out. By the time a person figures out how social drinking ballooned into a full-fledged dependency, it is always too late.

That's the sad and dangerous truth about addiction though. At first the activity seems harmless, especially if it's carried out in moderation. But when a person continues to rely on alcohol (or any other substance) in order to feel better or have fun, that's when the potential for addiction grows. The body starts to get used to the substance and treat it more like a necessity, like it's just as important as water.

It's why people need to be careful and self aware when taking part in such activities.

This one actually send shivers for me, not an alcohol consumer in any form myself but I have friends and collegues who rely way too much on alcohol.
For the last three years m not in India and in profession where we slog for hours and hours so I see many taking up alcohol for their release and as a stress buster, imagining them goin this way was a shock.I think in this high paced life they try to find the ultimate escape and it becomes a vaccum for their every emotions, if they are happy they will drink and if they are sad they will drink, what a tragedy.
I remember how a girl said that there is a lot of peer pressure involved and I so agree , have myself been encouraged by friends to drink so many times but then they have alwayz respected my decision ,just imagining a 14-16year old goin through it is hard.
How one becomes an alcoholic from a social drinker is simple, it is an ongoing process, what starts in teens keeps on building over the years resulting in the senses being super addicted to this poison.

what is unacceptable is drunk driving, that has to be curbed and soon !

Apparently alcohol doesn't effect everyone the same. Friends who've coerced you into drinking might never have the craving you can develop so every time you get drunk it's a risk you take.

What the psychiatrist was telling about the genetics of alchohol was not true. The receptors get upregulated in every single person. However those who have the Alchohol dehydrogenase gene deficiency will actually die if they drink too much, so they should never drink.

I dont think everyone who drinks socially will end up like that journo. I have been drinking socially starting from my teens for the past 15 years but never got addicted. Quit smoking too a couple of years back without any de-addiction help.
I guess it all comes down to self-control and will-power. No one can force me to drink more than I want to. It will always be the person who becomes the slave of addictions.
