Part 17
Gopi rushed up to her room, ignoring the slight twig in her right leg as she climbed the stairs. She opened her bedroom door slowly to make sure Ahem was not in the room. When she didn't spot him anywhere she quickly entered the room and locked the door. She went into the walk-in closet and knelt on the floor to reach for the bottom drawer of her dresser and quickly hid her purchases and smiled in relief.
She had been shopping for past two days with Ria, Kinjal and Rashi for the upcoming weddings, but today the girls had decided to go to the mall to buy things for Kinjal and Rashi's honeymoon. Gopi had accidentally told them about Ahem's plans for them after the engagement and everyone had insisted on making suggestions on one thing after another until she gave in and bought few things to surprise Ahem with.
As the days of their small vacation grew closer, Gopi felt her nervous anticipation growing. She felt her heart flutter at the thought of being intimate with Ahem. Finally they will be expressing their love physically and she was happy and nervous at the same time. Ahem hadn't let things get too far between them even after she told him she loved him and this made her love him even more.
Ahem leaned his shoulder against the doorframe of the closet door and watched Gopi quietly. He wondered what she was thinking about, but did not want to disturb her. He had been amazed at the change that had come over her once she revealed all her secrets and fears. The lingering sadness in her eyes had all but disappeared and she had blossomed under the love and care of his mom, kaki and rest of the family.
He sighed thinking about their plans for the mini vacation after the engagement. Just two more days then he will have her all to himself. Just the thought of being alone with her heated his blood in anticipation of the last and final phase of their relationship. Now that everything was out in the open between them, all he wanted to do was show her how much he loves her.
Gopi stood up and turned but stopped in her tracks when she saw Ahem standing by the door, arms folded across his naked chest, towel around his neck, leaning against the door, looking way too sexy for his own good. He must have been in the shower when she rushed into the room.
"When did you get home?" She asked as she walked towards him.
Ahem straightened up from his relaxed position as she stopped in front of him. "About half hour ago." He put his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him. He leaned down and kissed her on the cheek.
"Did you have fun shopping with the girls?" He said as he moved down to nuzzle her neck.
Gopi wrapped her arms around his bareback and sighed at the smoothness and warmth of his skin. She placed her cheek against his chest. "Hmmm'."
Ahem smiled and gave her another kiss on the neck, he pulled her against him tightly. He buried his face in her neck when he felt her lips on his chest. He pulled back, and moved her back slightly. He cupped her face and caressed it gently as he looked into her eyes.
Gopi placed her hands on Ahem's chest and looked back at him with open admiration and love. She moved her gaze down to his throat then his chest. She was moving her gaze down when she caught something on the left side of his chest just above where his heart would be. She moved the towel out of the way to take a closer look and gasped.
Gopi's gaze shot up to look at Ahem and then back down again. The design was very familiar to the one she had on her palm at the time of their wedding. His A and G design had been more integrated to one another than hers had been, but the concept was the same. G and A were tattooed into a heart entwined together where one couldn't tell where they began and ended together. They were made to look like an eternity symbol.
Gopi caressed the small design with her finger and looked up at him. "When did you do this?"
Ahem took her hand in his and kissed it gently. "Three years ago."
Gopi closed her eyes in pain. Gopi did not know how to express her gratitude to him for his limitless love for her. She opened her eyes, looked at the design again and moved closer to kiss it gently. She again placed her head on his chest and her hand on the design caressing it gently.
"Did it hurt?"
"Not as much as you were hurting at the time I am sure." He said in off hand manner.
Gopi sighed then looked up at him. "What am I going to do with you Ahem? Promise me you won't do something like this again."
Ahem kissed her on the lips. "I promise I won't do anything like this again as long as you are with me."
Gopi looked at him for a long moment before rising on her toes to kiss him. Ahem tightened his arms around her and lifted her off of her feet to make her more comfortable. He groaned when she deepened the kiss.
Gopi broke the kiss to rain kisses all over his face and down to his neck. "I love you so much!"
Ahem chuckled at her enthusiasm. "And I love you too baby."
Ahem carried her out of the closet and walked towards their bed and dropped her on the bed. He loomed over her as she looked up at him with wide eyes.
"Umm'Ahem, what are you doing?" She said as she moved back.
He raised an eyebrow and stopped her movements by leaning down and placing his elbows on both sides of her. "What does it look like I am doing Gopi?" He teased.
Gopi raised her arms to wind them around his neck and smiled. "Okay, just checking to make sure you knew what you were doing."
Ahem wrapped his arms around her and turned on his back taking her with him. Once she was settled with her head on his shoulder he took her hand and entwined their fingers together. "I can not win this one with you. I was just teasing you, I know girls are waiting for you downstairs to start dinner."
Gopi lifted her head to look down at him and grinned. "So you intended to see how far you could get away with teasing me or did you forget to take your shirt with you in the bathroom?"
Ahem tucked the lose tendril of her hair behind her ear and framed her face with his hands. "I just took advantage of opportunity presented." He stopped smiling. "I really missed you last night."
Gopi put her head back on his shoulder. "I missed you too. Were you able to solve the problem with the property in Denver?"
Ahem caressed her arm gently. He had to fly to Denver early morning the day before to solve a dispute with the franchise of the property in Denver and just returned this afternoon. He did all he could and left rest for his manager to handle. "Yeah its all settled for now, the manager will take care of rest of the problems."
Gopi kissed him on the cheek and sat up. "Okay, I am going to go down to help with dinner. Its just the eight of us, everyone else is gone to Puja at the mandir and will have dinner there."
Ahem watched her as she stood up and was by her side in instance when her face contorted in pain. "Gopi what's wrong?"
He lifted her in his arms and put her back on the bed. He could see her trying to massage her right leg and realized she was having spasms that were causing her pain. He moved her hand and took over massaging her leg. He kept the pressure light as he massaged the twisted muscles of her leg until they started relaxing one by one.
Gopi relaxed as the muscles in her legs started relaxing and the pain started fading. This was the first time she has had spasms since they married and she had hoped he would never have to deal with this but the two days of nonstop walking while shopping had made her muscles tense up to cause the spasms.
Ahem moved next to her and looked down at her worriedly. "Is it better now? Do you need me to get your medication?"
Gopi shook her head slowly and looked away from him.
Ahem turned her face towards him again and wiped the moisture from her forehead gently. "Gopi, don't turn away from me now. I am only worried for you and don't want to see you in pain that's all."
Gopi tried to smile at him but it didn't reach her eyes. "I am fine, it must have been all the walking I did while shopping yesterday and today."
Gopi sat up again. "I am going to go freshen up then go down to help with dinner." She looked at him one last time to reassure him before walking towards the bathroom slowly.
Ahem stood up and reached for his phone to text Jigar quickly then went into the closet to get a shirt to put on. By the time he finished dressing Gopi also came out of the bathroom, face scrubbed clean and hair tied up in a ponytail. She looked more relaxed and Ahem was relieved to see this.
He turned back towards the mirror to get his watch and few moments later he felt her hug him from the back and place her head on his back.
Gopi felt Ahem tense then relax. "Thanks Ahem, I am such an idiot for not saying it right away, I am sorry."
Ahem turned and pulled her into his arms. "You are not an idiot, you don't have to thank me for helping you relieve your pain, just don't try to hide it from me because you think you will worry me unnecessarily."
Ahem felt Gopi nod her head in agreement and bent to kiss her forehead. "Now let's go before the troops come looking for us." Gopi smiled at him as they walked downstairs together.
On the next day both Gopi and Ahem were kept busy in two different places. While Ahem made arrangements to accommodate the out of town guests arriving for the engagement, Gopi was kept busy with making sure that Jigar' clothes were ready and also to check to make sure the ring was picked up by him.
Ahem was just on his way to his room when he saw his kakiji talking to her cousin who had arrived earlier, he was about to greet them when he heard his kaki mention Gopi's name. He waited to hear what they were talking about.
Hetal frowned at her cousin. "Why are you so curious about Gopi Sudha?"
Sudha gave her cousin a curious look, she didn't know if she is right in what she was thinking but she had a feeling she was on the right path. "Tell me something Hetal, doesn't Gopi look familiar to you?"
Ahem held his breath, he felt his hear pounding palm sweat as he waited to find out what new revelations were about to turn Gopi's life upside down again.
Hetal thought back to the first time she met Gopi and remembered she had a fleeting thought of Gopi reminding her of someone, but she had put it aside to think on it later and never did. "Yes the first time I met her I thought she looked familiar, as if I knew her from somewhere."
Sudha nodded her head slowly. "My older sister Geeta, do you remember her?"
Hetal's eyes widened as she realized why Gopi looked so familiar to her the first time she met her. Her cousin Geeta, whom she only saw few times when they were younger, had the same features as Gopi. Hetal's mom and Geeta's mom are second cousins but were very close to one another. She had known about Geeta from what her mother told her and now realized that Geeta was the one who gave birth to Gopi and abandoned her later.
Sudha knew Hetal was not going to like what she was about to ask of her. "Listen Hetal, no one can know about this." Hetal gave her a shocked look. "I know what I am asking of you, but please understand why I am telling you to not say anything. Geeta is gone, she died 15 years ago, but for us she left long before then. No one knows about her affair or the child born out of wedlock and the family does not want to be reminded of this either."
Hetal couldn't comprehend why people worried more for their reputation than the person who belongs to their family. She had never been close to her cousins and the only reason she had even invited Sudha was because of her mother, but she now realized she would have been better of not inviting her.
Hetal was about to say few words to Hetal when she noticed Ahem standing by the door. He was clenching his jaw and hands in anger. Hetal quickly turned to Sudha. "We will discuss this later Sudha now is not the time or the place, but for now I won't say anything to anyone and that is all I can promise you."
Ahem stepped back as Sudha walked out the door after nodding at his Kaki. He waited for her to go towards the main hall before stepping into his Kaki's room. "Kaki?"
Hetal wiped her tears and went to her nephew. She quickly closed the door and took Ahem to sit in one of the chairs in the sitting area. "Ahem dikra, I know you are angry on Gopi's behalf, I feel the same but it is best if we don't say anything to her. This will only hurt her more."
Ahem thought about it for a moment and came to the same conclusion as his kaki. What would be the point of telling Gopi about her mother and her relatives if they don't even want to acknowledge her. Having one family reject her is devastating enough without adding on to more.
Ahem nodded, "Ji kaki, you are right. It is best for her not to know."
His Kaki gave him a quick hug and patted him on the shoulder. "I will talk to your mom about it later just to inform her."
Ahem nodded once then turned and walked out of the room. He went straight to his room and changed into his gym clothes. He needed a punching bag to get rid of his frustration and anger at people for their selfish attitudes. He needed to get rid of his frustration before he faced his Gopi or else he will completely lose his control and blurt out everything in anger.
Ahem threw the papers aside and pinched his eyes closed. For the past hour he had been trying to compare the numbers but unable to see where the mistake is made. All he kept thinking about was what he found out earlier in the evening. Punching the bag for 45 minutes straight had got rid of the anger in him but frustration at people's nature was hard to get rid of so easily. He just couldn't understand human nature and their inability to understand how one's decisions effects another human being.
Ahem leaned his head back and tried to come to terms with the fact that there was no accounting for how some people feels and there was no way to force them to accept something they refused to acknowledge. He just wished that his Gopi was not the one caught in the whole situation.
He opened his eyes when he felt Gopi's soft hands on his forehead, caressing gently. She stood behind his chair and looked down at him with concern visible in her eyes. He tried to smile to reassure her but was not very successful.
Gopi had watched Ahem brooding while she was packing their bags for the trip. She had seen him throw the paper aside in frustration and realized it was time to see what was bothering him, although she had a good idea already. She bent and wrapped her arms around his neck and placed her cheek against his. "You know sometimes you just have to face the facts that people are what they are, there is no way to explain their behaviors and accept that it just is never meant to be. Our lives can never be all happiness all the time, there is always bad along with good to balance everything out."
It took Ahem a moment to realize what she said and its meaning. He gave her a sharp look and watched her intently. Sat up slowly and pulled her around to make her sit on his lap. "Exactly what are you trying to say?" He kept watching her for change in her expressions for clue to her thoughts.
Gopi sighed and placed her hand on his cheek. "My birth mother and her family are not worth the attention you are giving them through your anger and frustration. My mother's existence in my life extends to her carrying me and giving birth to me that is all. I never knew her and never will, so there is no point in regretting or being hurt by her family's rejection of me."
Ahem was awed by Gopi's maturity in accepting things without feeling that world owed it her because of the way she was brought in to this world. It takes lot of courage to accept the fact that it was not worth wishing for something that could never be. "How long have you known about your mother and her family?"
Gopi smiled at him with sadness. "Since Dadi told me about my parents. I hired someone to find out all I can because I wanted to confront the woman who gave birth to me and ask her why she just didn't get rid of me when she found out she was pregnant with me instead giving birth to me then abandoning me." Gopi paused and recalled the moment when she received the information about her mother. "Anyway by the time I got the information back I realized what difference it would make now to confront her and just let it go. No one knows about this because I told no one."
Ahem pulled her close to him to hug her. "How did you know I was brooding over your family?"
Gopi placed her head on his shoulder and ran her hand up and down his arm. "I heard kaki talking to maa earlier. Kaki was telling maa what her cousin said and how you had also heard the conversation. She was worried about your reaction also."
Ahem took Gopi's hand and kissed the back of her hand softly. "I am very proud of you for not letting this effect you in any way. It makes me angry on your behalf but you were right when you said it would not make any difference in any way."
Gopi lifted her head to look at him. "I was also angry at first but then realized it all worked out for best in the end. I had Dadi, Sheetal aunty and bhai who loved me and that was more than some people have in this world. And now I have you and your whole family, I consider myself very lucky. I am happy Ahem, so don't get angry on my behalf."
Ahem took a relief breath and was finally able to let go of his anger and frustration. He was relieved to hear that she had gotten over her hurt and anger long before today. He pulled her tightly in his arms and held close to him for a long time.
Gopi eyed herself critically in the full-length mirror. The royal blue and silver sari was Ahem's choice for her. She smiled when she recalled the shopping trip last week and how he had dragged her to one shop after another because he wanted to find a perfect sari for her. She had tried to reason with him by telling him it wasn't her engagement but Rashi and Jigar's but he had refused to listen to her and continued until he found what he thought was perfect for her.
She took a deep breath and prepared herself to face her family, not only her father's side of it but also her mother's side. She wasn't feeling the pain of rejection anymore and she wanted to make sure that they also come to realize that what they think about her no longer makes any difference for her well being.
Ahem leaned against the bathroom door and just admired Gopi as she finished getting ready. He had been waiting for the right moment to present his surprise. He walked up behind her and bent place his face close to hers and met her eyes in the mirror. "You look beautiful," he said softly. He then presented the box that he was hiding behind his back. "This will be a perfect match to the outfit."
Gopi's eyes widened when she saw the necklace and matching set in the box he opened. There was a large, bow shaped diamond pendant on a rope platinum chain and matching earrings along with a bangle type bracelet. She couldn't speak to save her life at that moment.
Ahem took the necklace from the box and fastened it around her neck. He moved her hair to the side and gave her a quick kiss at her pulse point. "It looks even more beautiful on you."
Gopi touched the pendant with trembling hand. "Ahem, what was the need for this?"
Ahem turned her towards him. "No need for it, just wanted to gift you something for being you and because I love you."
Gopi just shook her head. "You are impossible Ahem."
Ahem smiled down at her in amusement. "Well we will see about that soon."
Gopi just looked back at him and again shook her head. Then she noticed he was not ready yet. "Okay, but lets see if you can finish getting ready before we both get in trouble for arriving late."
"It's all your fault for distracting me; I only came in here to give you your present, but one look and I forgot everything else." He pulled her closer to him. "Besides I was hoping you can help me with the tie and cufflinks, so I was waiting for you."
Gopi pushed him back. "Let me finish and I will be out in few minutes then I can help you, but only with the cufflinks, go put on the tie while I finish in here." She said as she pushed him out the door. She didn't give him chance to reply, closed and locked the door so he couldn't come back in.
She heard him grumble and smiled to herself. She walked to the vanity to finish getting ready.
Ahem had just finished with his tie when he heard the door to the bathroom open. He took the cufflinks from the dresser and walked towards her intently. "I am ready for you to help me now." He said as he handed her the links.
Gopi took the cufflinks and was amused by the way he was pouting. "Tell me something, who helped you with this when I was not around?"
She finished quickly and waited for him to answer her.
Ahem cupped her face in both hands. "I did them myself, but it is much more fun and takes less time when you fasten them on." He bent and gave her quick kiss.
Gopi straightened his tie and admired him in the charcoal gray suit. He looked handsome in the tailored suit and she was sure she was going to be envied by many women at the party as usual. She also knew that for him no other mattered and that just made her feel even more special knowing that for him she was the one, always was and always will be. She is very lucky indeed.
Gopi was not at all surprised to see her father arrive with Rashi's family. Her stepmother and Rashi's mom are good friends so she knew the threats to Ria were all empty ones. In any case she was glad her bhai and Ria are on their own now.
She stayed back as rest of the family moved forward to greet Rashi and her family. She did not want to be cause of anything going wrong for Jigar and Raji.
Ahem and Jigar joined her near the stage as she was double checking everything. She saw Jigar's restless movement, turned to Ahem, who just shrugged his shoulders. "All of a sudden he is nervous."
Gopi turned to Jigar in surprise. "Are you really nervous? I thought guys get nervous on the day of the wedding?"
Jigar grimaced at her teasing tone. "Yeah I am nervous, I don't know why, I just am today. And by the way bhai was not nervous on the day he married you." He changed the subject to take the focus off of him.
"Goes and shows how much he knows about how I felt that day." Ahem said from the side so only Gopi could hear him. Gopi nudged him with her elbow.
"Be nice, he is really nervous, I have never seen him like this. He is always so sure of himself." She said to Ahem.
Before Gopi could say anything more Ria took her by the hand to join the family. "Gopi why are you lurking back here? Both Mami's are asking for you."
Gopi walked toward the entrance of the hall reluctantly. As soon as she stepped next to Kinjal, her kaki handed her the puja thali. "Here you are Gopi dikra, it is your duty now to welcome Rashi as the younger vahu of our family."
Gopi hesitated but Koki also gave her an encouraging nod and so she did the rituals of welcoming her best friend to their family. She hugged Rashi as soon as the ritual was complete.
Once Rashi was introduced to everyone Gopi escorted her towards the stage where Jigar was already waiting for them. "You look beautiful Rashi." Gopi said as the walked to the front of the hall.
Rashi was in pink and gold lehnga that made her glow and made her look more beautiful. Rashi hooked her arm around Gopi's and smiled at her. "Thank you, but when I get married you better be prepared to help me. I let you get away today but not on the day of the wedding."
Gopi smiled back at her. "Deal, now be easy on my Devarji, he seems to be nervous today."
Rashi gave her a startled look. "Really? How interesting."
They stopped talking as they neared the stage. Few minutes later the short puja began and then it was time to exchange the rings.
Gopi gave Jigar the ring and gave him a reassuring smile. Once the rings were exchanged, the guest started coming over to congratulate Jigar and Rashi.
It was almost eleven when the last guest took their leave and the family was able to leave for home. Once they reached home everyone headed to their rooms immediately.
Gopi tried to cover her yawn as she turned back the covers on the bed. She lay on the bed and waited for Ahem to join her but she was having hard time keeping her eyes open. She smiled as Ahem joined her on the bed.
"Well that went well and without a hitch, someone was looking out for us." She said as soon as she put her head on his shoulder.
Ahem thought back to earlier and was glad that Gopi's family did not try to approach her or try to cause her any trouble. "I am glad that is over now, starting tomorrow its all rest and relaxation for us."
Gopi lifted her head to look at him. "You didn't tell me where we are going."
Ahem smiled down at her. "It's a surprise, but its not too far from here. I know you will like it."
Gopi didn't have it in her to pester him into telling her the destination, she snuggled closer to him and closed her eyes. She will wait until tomorrow to question him on their destination.

Thanks everyone, hopefully I will be able to post the last part later this week.
