CHAPTER 17 - You Are Mine...

"Aur tumhein akele barbaraane ka bhi bohot shauk hai!" (And you actually like talking to yourself!)

Khushi hissed through gritted teeth as her fury soared higher than ever.

"Haan to?" she burst out, her resolution to stop listening to him forgotten. (Ya, so?)

Arnav chuckled. "Kuchh nahin. Bas, achha lagta hai." (Nothing, I like it.)

Khushi looked at him in stupefaction and confusion as he got up, turning to leave.

"Kya?" (What?)

He looked at her with a large grin on his face.

"Mujhe tumhaara yeh bachpana achha lagta hai." (I said I like your childishness.)

He started walking away just to stop again and look at her.

"Khushi..." he whispered her name as he came closer to her. He suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her to her feet, flush against him and breathless. "Tell me something, will you?" he tried feeling as normal and nonchalant as he sounded. "How old are you?"

She blinked at him several time before his words sank in. But then too, being this close to him did not help her and without thinking about it, she blurt out her age. "Nineteen." His grin made her heart skip a beat. And Khushi kept watching in awe as he walked away as if nothing had happened at all, as if he had not just stood so near to her...

On the way back home, she was chastising herself. Asking a girl's age was bad manners. Why had she not told him that? How could she just tell him? How come her tongue ' which usually found witty retorts within the fraction of a second ' get tied into silence by one stupid, arrogant, self-centered guy? Khushi Kumaari Gupta! What on earth is happening to you?

***

Anjali finally disconnected with a disappointed sigh and turned to the Gupta sisters.

"Yeh Chhote bhi na!" (This Chhote is too much!)

"What happened, Di? Where's Arnie?"

Arnie? Arnie? Khushi looked at Radhika with pure horror that the other girl thankfully did not notice. Was Radhika really speaking of Arnav Singh Raizada? Did she just call him Arnie? What the-?

Khushi bit back the laughter which was bubbling inside of her.

"Voh keh rahe the unhein kuchh kaam aagaya hai to voh baad mein aayenge. Shaayad mamma se bhi mil nahin payenge. Chaliye, hum Chhote ke liye apna din to barbaad nahin karenge!" (He was saying some work has come up so he'll come later. Maybe he won't even see mamma. Come, we don't want to ruin our day for him.)

Anjali went inside to inform her aunt and mother of her cousin's phone call but Khushi did notice that even if the day had not been ruined yet, Anjali's mood had certainly fallen a few notches.

***

As much as Arnav hated to lie to Anjali, he had had to do this. He needed to set his mind in order before seeing anyone else.

He was driving fast, jaws clenched together and hands clutching the steering wheel tightly. He saw the road but he was not really looking at in. The only thing that was stuck in front of his eyesight, blocking everything else out, was Khushi's face, every second he had spent with her. Her last words from their recent conversation rang in his ears. She found in necessary to stay away from him...

Work had come up... that's what he had told his Di. He snorted darkly. Work? Yeah, work! His mind was really worked up from her words. His feelings had him reeling. Arnav Singh Raizada did not know what to do. It would have been funny if someone had told him one day he would not know what to do with life. He would have laughed in that person's face and told him "Good joke!"; because he was Arnav Singh Raizada and Arnav Singh Raizada always had a plan, his life had been mapped out clearly since years before. But it was really happening... Now... No, ever since Khushi had come in his life...

Only the thought of Khushi being with somebody else drove him mad. So mad he kicked hard on her brakes. The car screeched to a halt and he got down, slamming the door shut angrily.

"Door rehena hi theek hoga, Arnavji."

Arnav closed his eyes but it changed nothing. It would not shut her out. She still saw the tears in her eyes as he had opened the door for her in the morning. He remembered she would stay in America for the rest of her life. Would she, now? Did she think he would let that happen?

His anger flared up. He paced around his car in frustration. How did she even think of leaving him? How dare she? She already had left him once, would she have enough courage to do it again? Probably yes, but he would never let go of her...

He hit his fist against the door of the car. Was she doing this because he was getting married to her sister?

Of course. It seemed the only reason for this folly. Only, Khushi was a girl who acted on her follies even if she did not have reason to support it.

But if she was doing this because she thought he was marrying Radhika, she was stupid. She was utter dumb. And she did not know him... not at all...

Bloody hell! How could she even think that he would look at someone who was not Khushi Kumaari Gupta? Even if it were her sister, he would never care the least for her, dammit!

Arnav breathed deeply. He knew it was unfair. He was leading everyone on. Making both their families believe he would marry Radhika. But the truth was he did not care for Radhika. And he knew Radhika neither did love him, nor did she care about Khushi. He knew Radhika hated her sister... It was something he had known since childhood and from the looks of it, she still hated Khushi. And she was planning something big.

So whatever he was doing, Arnav was calculating his steps well. He needed to protect his love, his Khushi from Radhika. And at the same time, he had to win her back, to get her confess her love for him. And not quite surprisingly, he felt no shame using the selfish Radhika to succeed in his motive. After all, wasn't she using him against Khushi?

He sighed. He was perhaps being stupid and selfish. What if his plan failed? What if his bogus wedding turned into reality? Would he be able to let go of her? But he could not see her with someone else, dammit!

But then, he could not expect her to sacrifice her life for him. To love only him forever. To stay alone for the rest of her life even as he would be married to her own sister...

He felt his heart shatter. He did not want her to live a lonely life. Khushi was a girl who deserved a better life. She deserved to love and be love. To marry someone who would fill her with bliss and take away all her sorrows. To have children who would be just like her...

He felt hot tears streaming down his cheeks as he finally broke down. Everywhere he tried to place her somewhere in the future, he was there too. Arnav's Khushi; Khushi's Arnav. They together. Their families. Their house, their life, their happiness, their sadness, their troubles, even their children, for God's sake. He could not imagine Khushi Kumaari Gupta with anyone else, anyone else who was not Arnav Singh Raizada.

Khushi Kumaari Gupta belonged to him.

Slowly, Arnav opened his eyes as it hit him. She was his. He repeating these words ferociously in his mind as though they held some miraculous power. Magically enough, he felt himself fill with redoubled energy. Khushi was him, and there was no way he'd let go. He would make this work. He would protect her. He would win her back. He would get her to say the three words he'd been dying to hear from her since five years back...

She was his and she would always be. He'd make sure of that. Whatever happen, he would make every possible move to make her accept her love for him and marry him. There would be nobody in her life but him.

No one but him...

CHAPTER 18 - Worried?

"Mamma to jaachukin hain! Ab bas Naniji ke aane ka intezaar hai!" chirped Anjali. (Mamma has gone! Now we can just wait for Naniji!)

Khushi wondered if anyone noticed the woman's gloom behind the fake happiness she was trying to show. Arnav was not back yet and had missed his aunt's departure. He seemed not to care about his family at all. He did not even care to meet his aunt before she left and now his Di was heartbroken and miserable because of him. Did he realise Anjali was pregnant and needed to be protected from any kind of stress or strain? Now that her husband was not there, he, as the brother, should have been taking care of all this, right?

Ritika, Anjali's younger sister, as if reading Khushi's mind squeezed her hand gently to reassure her. Khushi smiled. The two of them had gotten along well, maybe because of their close ages. In fact, Ritika was only one year younger than Khushi. The girls, Radhika and Anjali was gathered in Gitanjali, Anjali's first child's room to have a nice conversation. Badi Ba had left a while ago and all the preparations for Naniji's arrival had been made.

Aradhna has told them to go do something else while she spent some time with her husband as her mother, brother and sister-in-law would come later in the afternoon. Khushi who hated sitting idle had taken up the responsibility of braiding Gitu's hair. The girl was very cute and sweet and kept Khushi busy with her endless chatter. Khushi remembered that she too used to be like that. But one incident had completely changed her life. As this thought brought along old memories of Arnav, she looked frantically around for a diversion. She had no right to think about him now...

Khushi noticed Anjali glancing at her mobile several times.

"Anjaliji, kya hua? Koyi pareshaani hai?" (What happened Anjaliji? Any problem?)

"Yeh Chhote pata nahin kahaan gaye hain? Kitne ghante hogaye! Unhon ne to khaana bhi nahin khaaya, aur aap to jaanti hain na, Khushiji, Chhote ko diabetes hai! Khaana nahin khaaya aur sugar level kam hogaya to voh kitne kamzor ho jaate hain! Hum bas yahi ummeed kar sakte hain ke unhon ne savere apni davaayi khaayi thi! Rukiye! Hum abhi phone karke pata lagaate hain ke Chhote hain kahaan?" (Where is this Chhote gone? How many hours has he been gone? He has not even eaten, and you know Khushiji, he's got diabetes! If he doesn't eat and his sugar level goes down, he gets weak! I just hope he was taken his medicine in the morning. Wiat! I'll call him and see where he is?)

She got up from the bed to stand near the window, dialling her Chhote's number. After sometime she turned to the other three.

"Chhote phone nahin utha rahe hain. Humein to bohot chinta ho rahi hai!" (He's not answering. I'm so worried!)

"Offo, Di!" Ritika jumped up to hug her sister. "Bhaiyya ne aapko aise dekha, na, to hum sab par gussa kareinge ke humne unki Di ko pareshaan hone kaise diya! Jabki zimmedaar voh khud hi hain! Aur aap pe bhi gussa honge ke aap aisi haalat mein aur iss umar mein apna khayaal nahin rakh sakti!" (If Bro sees you like this, he'll be so angry with us that we let his Di worry! Even if he's the real culprit! And he'll be angry at you for being so worried too and will say that at this age and in this condition you cannot take care of yourself!)

"Ya, Di! Arnie aajaayenge! Don't worry, maybe he's in a meeting!" (... Arnie will be back!...)

"Hum phir se phone lagaate hain." (I'll try calling him again.)

Anjali released herself from Ritika who sighed dramatically. Khushi pretended to concentrate on what Gitu was saying but she was as worried as Anjali too. but why should she care about Arnav Singh Raizada? Why should she care if he stayed away from home and refused to answer his calls? What was he to her?

Yet her eyes travelled to Anjali's phone. Where on earth had he gone? Silly Laad Governor! He was so selfish, this man!

"He Devi Maiyya! Unki raksha karna!" The thought crossed her mind even before she realised it and a faint blush crept up her cheeks. She needed to get him out of her whole system! He was marrying her sister for God's sake! (HDM! Protect him!)

Just then, a gentle breeze fanned her face and her heart beat faster than usual. She glanced at the window. It was closed. Khushi frowned. Something was wrong. He heart leap out of control. She froze in place as her mind began to understand what her heart already knew.

"Pata nahin kya kaam hoga jo Chhote apni Di ka phone nahin utha rahe!" (I don't know what kind of work is keeping him so busy that he's not even answering his Di's calls.)

Khushi bit her tongue to avoid blurting out that Arnav was back because she would be unable to explain how she knew, but she did not really need to because the devil who had been spoken of was already there to make his presence known.

"Di! Main phone kyun uthaaounga jab main ghar mein hi hoon? I can just come see you!" (Why will I answer your calls if I'm already here?)

The four of them turned to look at him, standing in the doorway, a grim expression on his face. The way his wind-blown hair fell slightly on his face made Khushi's heart beat just a teeny bit faster ' she got the feeling it was on the point of bursting.

Anjali rushed to him and cupped his cheek.

"Chhote! Tumhein pata bhi hai humein kitni chinta ho rahi thi?" (D'you know how worried i was?)

"You don't need to worry, Di! Agar aapko yaad nahin to aapka Chhote ab chhe foot ka ho chukka hai! And, yeah, main late hogaya kyunki main Badi Ba se milne gaya tha, station pe. Why didn't she just go by car? It was so crowded there!" (...If you don't remember your Chhote is now six feet tall! And I got late because I went to meet Badi Ba at the station...)

Anjali laughed and shook her head, making Khushi feel somewhat relieved that everything was fine. It was certainly not that she was too concerned about Arnav. Just as she was denying her worries concerning him, his gaze slid on her, observing her movements. Khushi gulped and resumed her task. Maybe he was just looking at Gitu...

He was turning to leave while Khushi tied the end of Gitu's plait when Anjali stopped him.

"Chhote, khaana khaaya tumne?" (Chhote, did you have you lunch?)

He shook his head.

"Theek hai. Hum khaana lagate hain." (Ok. I'll serve you your food.)

"Fine, I'll be in my room."

"Mamu!" Gitu ran to him. "Can I play on your laptop please?"

Arnav actually smiled at the child and bent to pick her up in his arms. He kissed her chubby cheek.

"Of course, beta."

As he carried his niece to his room, Khushi admired him.

He'll make a very good father...

Wait! Where did that come from, Khushi?!

CHAPTER 19 - Together... Alone

"Mujhe pata tha! Aaj tumse phir se milne vaala hoon, pehle se hi pata chal gaya tha!" (I knew it! I knew I'd meet you again today!)

Khushi was startled. She was just standing in one of the sarso (mustard) enjoying that day's gentle and surprisingly cool sunrise when his voice has assailed her ears, snatching her out of her daydreams where she would be standing in a filmy place like this and her prince charming would come sweep her off her feet. When she opened her eyes, he was walking towards her.

"Aap humaara peechha kyun nahin chodte?" (Why don't you stop following me?)

"Main tumhaara peechha thodi na kar raha hoon? Tum hamesha vahin pohonch jaati ho jahaan mujhe jaana hota hai!" (I'm following you? It's you who reaches where I want to go!)

He stood by her side and stretched his arms lazily in front of him.

"Aap-" (You-)

"Shut up, Khushi."

Her eyes widened but she obeyed him. It felt good, the way he said her name, and at the same time it sent shivers down her spine and tickles down her stomach. Having him say her name was more like him caressing her...

They stood this way for quite some time, watching the horizon, then finally he turned to look at her. Her eyes were closed and she had a beatific smile drawn on her face. He held his breath as his eyes roamed over her. She was beautiful. He smiled as he observed her. She did look very young and he had been mistaken about her age for all these days. She was still a bit young, but not that young. He had actually felt relieved when she had told him she was nineteen. Just five years younger than him. It was not a lot. In fact nine whole years separated his parents.

What the-? Catch yourself Arnav Singh Raizada? Why the comparison with mom and dad? It's not like you're planning to get married to her! You're not marriage material!

He shifted his thoughts back to the girl standing beside him. Khushi. He love it when she dared to do what other were afraid of doing: openly opposing him. He like it when she argued with him. It made him realise he loved teasing her.

He continued watching her and it hit him. His smile widened with a wicked glint in his eyes while an idea formed in his devilish mind.

***

"Khushiji! Zara idhar aayye!" (Come here a minute!)

"Ji Anjaliji?" (Yes?)

"Voh humein na, Radhikaji mil nahin rahi aur Hari Prakashji to bahar kaam se gaye hain. To aap hamaara ek kaam kar sakti hain?" (I can't find Radhika and Hari Prakashji is out. So can you do me a favour?)

"Kahiye na, Anjaliji!" (Tell me!)

"Aap Chhote ko yeh unka khana de kar aayengi? Aur jab aap vahan hain, to Gitu se bhi kehena uski davaayi ka vakt hai!" (Give Chhote his food, will you? And when you're there tell Gitu it's time for her meds!)

Anjali thrust a platter of food in Khushi's hands without waiting for an answer and hurried off somewhere. Khushi could do nothing but obey. She frowned at the plate.

"Laad Governor apna khaana khud khaane nahin aa sakte kya? Ab humein jaakar unhein dena padega!" (Laad Governor can't come take his lunch by himself? Now, I have to go give him!)

She sighed heavily. She could do this. She had already faced him so many times since she'd come, hadn't she?

***

"To, kya keh rahi thi tum?" (What were you saying?)

Khushi looked at him smugly.

"Bhool gaye." (I forgot.)

"Tum bhool gayi, aur voh bhi itni jaldi?" he smirked. "Bhullakkar!" (You forgot, so soon? Forgetful!)

"Hum... Aap... Hum bhullakkar nahin hain!" (I... You... I'm not forgetful!)

Arnav observed her. She was flustered but blushing; Good!

"Oh really?"

"Haan, humein yaad hai... hum poochh rahe the ke aap humaara peechha kyun kar rahe hain!" (Yes, I remember... I was asking why you are following me!)

"No! Tum yeh poochh rahi thi ke main tumhaara peechha chhodta kyun nahin!" (You were asking why I don't stop following you!)

"Vahi baat hui na!" (Same thing!)

He shook his head insolently at her, but with the most innocent expression he could manage. She realised he was just pulling her leg, and decided to play along, so she tried to angry at him. Unfortunately, she ended up laughing.

Arnav too gradually realised he was laughing with her, and seeing each other laughing seemed funny, and they laughed harder. Khushi lost her balance and fell on the ground. All of a sudden, she stopped laughing to give a sharp cry of pain. When she looked at her hand, where she had felt a burning sting, she saw a gash opening her palm and blood oozed out of it.

Tears filled her eyes as the burn increased, but suddenly, a large warm hand enveloped hers, closing around her wrist, his skin darker in contrast to hers, and Khushi looked up in his stormy eyes which were by then examining her cut. She realised he had stopped laughing; his eyes were full of worry.

***

A knock at the door made uncle and niece look up fron the screen. Khushi stood in the doorway, her nervousness obvious by her posture, staring at the floor and biting on her bottom lip. Arnav noticed the plate in her hands.

"Come in," he muttered.

She walked in still staring down.

"Anjaliji ne aapke liye khaana bheja hai aur Gitu se kaha hai unki davaa..." (Anjaliji has sent your lunch and she says Gitu should take her meds...)

"Oh yeah! Main to bhool gayi! Maamu! I'll go!"

The little girl scurried off and Khushi's heart sank. She was left alone with the Laad Governor now. He Devi Maiyya! What would he do? She knew he was watching her; her body was on fire fron his scrutiny. Yet, she ignored him and put the plate on his table beside him and turned to leave.

"Khushi!"

She stopped dead at his voice...

CHAPTER 20 - Come To Me...

"Khushi."

He called her softly as she turned to leave. He saw her stop, stiffening slightly.

His voice was husky, his tone gentle. Khushi stopped in her tracks unwillingly. She tried to move her legs and get away but her feet would not budge. She cursed her body. Why did it have to be stubborn when it came to him?

Arnav pushed his chair back and stood. He walked to her, taking his time, as he knew she would not go. It was time he did something, he had enough of her running away. He reached for her elbow and turned her around so that she faced him. He knew he had to say something but what? He just stared into her chocolate brown eyes while she stared into his, emotions rushing through them, questions and words arising in their hearts, but all of them dying on their lips...

***

"Koyi insaan itna bhi clumsy kaise ho sakta hai?" he barked, still examining her injured hand. (How can a person be so clumsy?)

The cut was not deep, thankfully, but she was losing blood too quickly. Neither noticed the anxiety etched in his voice.

"I'm not clumsy, okay?"

"Yeah, I can see that!"

He ground his teeth together and pressed his thumb hard on the injury. She hissed and turned her face away, eyes shut tight. He felt guilty for causing her this pain but it was the only way to stop the bleeding.

"Applying pressure will stop the blood coming out, Khushi. I have to do this."

"Hum jaante hain." (I know.)

After some time, he relaxed his fingers on her hand and brought the cut closer to his face to study it again. The bleeding had finally ceased and if she took care of it, it would close very quickly too. His lips slowly curved into a smile as he blew gently on the wounded area. He felt her go rigid under his touch, her breath hitched at his closeness. Their eyes locked.

Khushi blinked several times as he continued blowing on her palm, gazing at her with that faint smile that threatened to make her heart stop beating. The breeze had slightly dishevelled his hair and her blood stained his hands. Still looking at her, Arnav bent his head to brush his lips against her cut. Her breath caught, making his smile widen into a grin. He appeared as though her being so close to him and her reactions to him were not at all affecting him too.

"I think tumhein ghar jaakar antiseptic lagaana padega." (I think you have to go home and apply some antiseptic.)

His eyes were full of concern. It made her insides melt. Khushi gulped and stared at him incredulously. One minute he was practically kissing her hand and the next, it was as if nothing had happened. He watched her as she slowly came out of her daze with a grin and mischief sparkling in his eyes. It was not unusual for girls to react this way around him but what he found shocking was the way he was reacting to her, and it was not like she was seducing him or something; the poor girl was doing nothing but following her feelings that, it seemed, she had never felt before.

And it he actually liked it. The way his emotions got into a messy tangle when he was around her. He did not show but he felt strange. His heart was beating like mad. This had never happened before. He had never been so attracted to anyone before. Well only if he did not count his childhood crush...

Unknowingly, he had leaned closer to her and they were just inches apart when Khushi realised what was happening and stood up quickly. Both were breathing raggedly.

"Humein ghar jaana hain." (I need to go home.)

She took off as fast as her feet would allow. Arnav watched her go, wanting to stop her, hold her back but he had no excuses. His mind had gone blank. Only a question remained there, flasing dangerously, bright as a neon light: What the hell were you just doing, Arnav Singh Raizada?

***

He caught her hand wordlessly, the one she had cut herself all those years ago, and brought it up. A scar was still there to remind them of that day. He looked in her troubled eyes as the old memories came back. Tentatively, he brought her hand to his face, brushed his lips against the scar, then boldly pressed them on her palm. Khushi shuddered as she got caught in a whirlwind of emotions.

Arnav looked at her, his eyes dark. She had her eyes shut, as if afraid he would see her feelings through them. Gently but firmly, he pulled her closer, his arm around her waist to prevent her from escaping. He kissed her cheek and felt her tremble against him. His lips trailed down her jaw, her neck. Her hand closed around his collar, gripping it, scrunching it as he teased her.

"Chhote! Khushiji!"

Anjali's voice shattered the moment. They froze in horror, Khushi's eyes wide.

"Naniji aagayi! Jaldi neeche aao!" (Naniji has arrived! Come downstairs quickly!)

Khushi pushed him away, breathing heavily. What had gotten into her? How could she let this happen? She ought have left. She did not have to stop even if he was calling her. She glared at him angrily. What was he thinking? She wanted to lash out her anger onto him but she just could not get the words. She stormed out of his room in silence.

Arnav remained shell shocked until she had left. He cursed, running his hand through his hair. He sat down again at his table, reflecting on what he had been about to do.

He was on the point of kissing her dammit! And that was definitely not what he had on his mind for convincing her to confess her love. He had to thank Di for the interruption or she would have never forgiven him ever again. And as for making her his, it would have either taken years, which he doubted he had, or, more certainly, it would have been impossible. Even what he had done now had thrown her off balance and by her expression on her face, he knew he would have to face her wrath.

But one thing he was sure about; Khushi Kumaari Gupta still felt for him. He had seen it. By the way she had shuddered, trembled, gasped, hung on to him. A smile crept on his face. He wouldn't give a damn about her anger, he knew it was all fake.

He grabbed the fork and gobbled up his now-cold lunch feeling this bubble of happiness growing inside him. Khushi still felt for him. He knew it for sure now and there was no way he would not take advantage of the fact.

He chuckled, his old mischief slowly returning...
