"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."-
Martin Luther King

Once while travelling in the metro I saw a guy in the ladies compartment. Here is what happened, I told him that his travelling in the ladies compartment was a punishable offence. He said that he would get off in the next station. He didn't.

What pisses me off (immensely) is that everybody saw it, the even talked about it in whispers and giggled over it in groups but no one took a stand. Why?

We are educated, we know the rules but we refuse to take a stand.I am sure if even one person had spoken up when I did he would have got off.The whole point is that maybe its a small thing but its wrong and we should not just say "Its very bothersome", or "Its too much trouble"
When he got off I did ask him sweetly "Did the next station come finally?"

He didn't reply.

On a vacation I purchased a water bottle from a lone shop in the corner.I opened up the bottle and drank it and gave the shop keeper the money. He quotes a higher price than the MRP saying that it is his shop and here he will sell water at his prices. No one can blame me for what happened later but suffice is to say that I didn't give him a penny more than the MRP. What annoyed me was that the people near me where nudging me to drop it.

Why should I?

I will like to quote one more example. I have seen educated people litter the roads because the dustbin is far away and anyways the road is littered so why bother at all?Is it so hard to walk a bit and throw the garbage in the dustbin? Is it not something which your pre-school teacher harped about always?

These are just small instances but they annoyed me a lot.We are educated and yet we turn a blind eye to these things.

Why do we have the "Chalta hai yaar" attitude about everything? When we think like that of course sab chalega!

Agreed. But even beyond the law there are some basic responsibilities we should fulfill as citizens of our country. There is a 'if he is doing it why shouldn't I' attitude which basically makes us no different than a herd of sheep. Its a pity that we are happy being sheep.

One of the most alarming things I have seen in India was the unhygene nature of the so called metro cities (specially kolkata).
I dont remember even the most poor town in Poland being such.
I know it is hurtful for some patriotic sentiments when such a comment comes from a foreighner, and that too from a white person (who I suppose are already frowned upon), but I still would like to mention it as this is something I always wanted to mention to young Indians. They need to know that this belittles their country a lot.
I have respect and good wishes for India only, as I am somehow associated with it ofcourse (through my husband and now my child). Everyone seem to be OK with the open garbage and the stink! Even some religious temples were so unkept and so dirty (specially the Hindu temple opposite to the "very well maintained and thankfully so" Lotus Temple in New Delhi), so many banana peel and locked water or maybe pee! were there that I decided not to enter at the risk of offending my in laws whom I wanted to be near as much! I am grateful they understood, but I guess it is obvious?
I my whole life I never saw such neglect. Sorry.

Its really disheartening to read such comments, more so because you are right- the roads are unkempt and generally littered with garbage.

I don't know how much truth your comment about the poorest city in Poland being better holds because I have never been there but we do see garbage lying all around in India.

First there are no dustbins at regular gaps on the road side. Moreover we see people spitting red chewed betel leafs on the road ( I mention this because this is a very common occurrence) and whats more, if you go to them and tell them that this isn't the correct thing to do they will look as offended as the priest who is arguing with an atheist.

You don't need to be sorry for stating your opinion.

The characteristics which you pointed out differ from person to person so haven't you given a very generalized statement?

Statistically speaking the United States is the most adulterous country in the world and India is far, far down that list.

As far as I know Indians are considered to be very hard working and sincere, isn't that the reason why so many MNCs offer such great packages to them? I agree that not all people are sincere but not all of them are insincere either.

Moreover people are 'sex starved' as individuals and not as citizens of a country.

You are right- its always easy to be judgmental. The thing that really counts is taking action and that ways we are indifferent, insincere, lazy and unhygienic.

One reason could be that people feel they have to be polite or tolerant and not poke their nose into "other's bussiness". The person protesting on seeing his neighbour's dog poo and pee in the corridor, or compound would be frowned upon as a nasty fellow. Those who approve of his protest would prefer to watch in silence . The protestor gets a bad name in the society and the mess continues

india has a 60% village population. I'm talking about urbanized cities. heck, mumbai has a near 50% divorce rate.

actually there have been complaints as to indian staff.

india is just a cheap labour country, not necessarily superior quality.
