Good reviews do not always make a film a hit, like we saw with Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai.
Likewise, bad reviews may not always turn the audiences away.
Films like Rowdy Rathore and Housefull 2 received some scathing reviews but went on to become blockbusters.
What makes these badly-reviewed films such big hits? We asked media professional and industry observer Abhijit Mhamunkar, and he gave us quite a few insights.

With an increase in ticket prices, it has become easier for movies to make money.

Most audiences can't be bothered about plotlines and character-development. They just want to have a good time. So even if critics lambasts films, the target audience for whom the films were made will get entertained.

Another new trend is that movies these days are being released in a large number of screens, something that was not in practice during Golmaal 3, Singh Is Kingg, Heyy Babyy and Housefull. The latest releases like Don 2, Ra.One, Bodyguard and Ready managed bigger figures as they were released in many more screens. Some multiplexes shows up to 25 shows of a single film. That's why making Rs 100 crore in the first week is not difficult; it has become a benchmark now.
Here's looking at some badly-reviewed films that went on to become blockbusters.

If money can be spent on these small films, they can also become a hit but not every film is backed by an UTV or an EROS.I have seen examples of two films which had 0% promotions...but became super hits...but they were regional films...i don't think Bollywood is still ready to accept small films.

I don't think most reviewers are wonderful or know a lot about cinema either. Some of them seem to just summarise the movie. I think there are some blogs on Indian cinema by independent bloggers which are better than the usual newspaper film reviews.

Everyone has a different different views/opinions . May be majority of viewers like watching bad movies instead good just to lambast Director and producer after watching their movies but when they watch these bad movies , may be they find them gripping and make these bad movies " HIT".

So far i notice as before watching movie we listen about it, we find completely different to that while watching..

Lets be honest bad films make good money because people don't want to think, just be entertained, people in india have difficult life, less money, working etc, for the few bucks they have they want to entertained, they don't care if there is real storyline in it, they want to see a hero bashing all the villains, a herione who doesn't say much only dancing, end of the day they had a great time! For three hours they are stress free in another world. 😉
