"Unless you have something strikingly different to offer, it's very difficult to make your mark in the realm of cinema," was what his grandfather V Shantaram always said. Now, Chaitanya Shantaram is strictly adhering to that advice.

Chaitanya has produced a Marathi film called Ishshya (A Blushing Reaction) which is due for next month. Defying traditional norms of Marathi cinema, Chaitanya has incorporated the theme of a pregnant man in the hilarious movie, being co-produced with Ashok Raut under the banner of V Shantaram Entertainment.

Twist in the tale

Enthuses Chaitanya, "It's the first time ever in the history of Mumbai's filmography that someone has dared to venture into such a bizarre subject. It's a rollicking comedy that reflects today's times. The tale revolves around a married couple, where the wife (Shweta Shinde) is a fitness freak and does not want to conceive lest she ruin her shapely figure.

Ironically, the husband (Ankush Choudhury) is yearning to become a father. In a crazy twist of events, the husband realises that it is he who is 'expecting', instead of his wife.

"What happens thereafter is what will grip the audiences," says Shantaram Jr, whose movie will revive his home banner after a gap of 15 years.

Directed by Prashant Girkar, Ishshya does seem inspired by the Oscar-nominated Hollywood movie Junior, which had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a scientist who impregnates himself.

Traditional flavour

"Honestly, the basic idea of a male pregnancy was the only inspiration. The story and screenplay of Ishshya is original and laced with traditional Maharashtrian flavour.

It was my dream to offer a token tribute to my legendary grandfather, whose colourful songs were the highlight of some of his movies like Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje and Jal Bin Machchli Nritya Bin Bijli.

That is why I have incorporated a grand song composed by Sharang Dev and performed by this charming actress Kranti Redkar on an exotic, expensive studio set," says Chaitanya, who hopes to "make his directorial debut with a Hindi movie by the end of the year."
