Telly hotties move to Bollywood

The year 2012 will probably go down in television history as one when the brightest stars of small screen took their big plunge on 35 mm.

Almost every telly heartthrob who's got a hit show tucked under his/her designer belt and a mammoth fan following, is moving on to the inevitable next level - movies. Pulkit Samrat, the erstwhile Lakshya of Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi might have missed the BO jackpot in his debut, Bittoo Boss, but others like Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam have struck lucky with a hit debut (Vicky Donor). The small screen imports' list (to Bollyland) in 2012, is enviable: Karan Singh Grover (Lorrie/The Loving Doll), Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh (Kai Po Che), Karan Kundra (Pure Punjabi), Gurmeet Choudhary (Yaar Mera Rab Warga), Shilpa Anand (Bloody Ishq), Barun Sobti (Main Aur Mr Right) and Sara Khan (Haarey Ka Sahara).

So what's with B-Town's latest 'fondness' for soapbox stars? Says Ayushmann, "Bollywood's opening up to newcomers and talented actors, as filmmakers are in the mood to experiment." Of course, telly hotties find it much easier to connect with the audience since they already have a faithful fanbase and camera experience, that often give them an edge over other newbie actors. Says Sreejita De who did Luv Ka The End, "Today, talented TV stars get work in films because perceptions are changing."

While some Tellytowners quit TV for Bollywood, there are some like Karan Kundra, Gurmeet Choudhary, Karan Tacker and Barun Sobti who are firm about wanting to straddle both worlds. Karan Kundra who's currently doing the youth crime show, Gumrah - End of Innocence and a Punjabi film (Pure Punjabi) admits, "While TV actors do come with an image trap, television's wider reach gives us an advantage over other newcomers."

It's up to the audience to help their favourite soap stars convert that advantage to BO returns.
